My dads boss bought a storage trailer a few years back. He's a Ford guy and my dad is a Chevy guy. There were 2 mopar engines in the back on orange one blue. He thought they were BB but I went out and nope. Both were 1970 small blocks. One s 2bbl 318 the other a J headed 340. Both are complete long blocks but the 340 has the pan off. He called his boss and said to make him an offer. So my question is what would be a fair price to offer him on either just the 340 or for both? I don't know whats wrong with either if anything.

Offer him $200.00. If he's had them around this long , they are only taking up space and are probably in the way. The valve covers alone are worth at least 50.00 a set!!

He's a helluva good guy and he knows its a 340. I just don't want to lowball him

$800 for the 340 sight unseen. Goes up from there. 318 is probably $300 depending on where you are. all over the board, some 340's go for crazy prices if the guy really wants it. Ford or Chevy guy probably just wants them gone. I got a set of $$$ T&D Mopar LA rockers for $150 from a Chevy guy.

I understand but from your post, no one knows the condition of the engines. Do they even turn over? Could be a good catch or boat anchors. You won't know until you disassemble them.

Can you get the partial VINs from both?

Inspect before making any offer for sure. If they ever froze and cracked as one example, not worth much.

Thats kinda why I'm teetering on the fence line. I don't want to pay top dollar but don't want to lowball him. Its one of those things. If I do get it and it turns out to be a coffee table I don't want a 800+ paper weight

Make the offer. Worst thing he can say is no or give you an idea of what he wants for them. You are not lowballing him, you are taking a huge risk in buying them. Any Muscle car fan knows what a good 340 is worth. Why has he had them so long?

He just went up and picked up the trailer. He bought the trailer full of parts and it sat for 2 years. Honestly I don't think he knew what was in there. Me being and honest guy I told him one was 318 and one was 340

Interesting! I wonder if the trailer belonged to a Mopar fan. Makes me think there may be other Mopar goodies in there as well!!

worth value of 70 340 intake, and 70 2.02 j-heads, valve covers IF you are 100% sure they are 1970 340’s.

you are taking the risk the heads aren’t cracked, the motor is not frozen, block not cracked, block not already 60 over.

if you don’t need them and plan to resell them. You need to buy it for no more than half someone else would buy the 340 in same circumstances.

the 318 is not really worth much at all.

If you're mopar savvy, due your due diligience by looking at the motors, take a brazillian pictures of the cleaned up vins, casting dates and over all condition etc.

.060 over, rusted solid, cracked block? Lots of problems could be hiding in there. Need to Take apart and check them out before a price can be established.

I did a deal with a friend who did not know the condition of a car he inherited. It had been sitting for a while. Just the car alone had some value so I told him if it runs good I'll give you 500 more. It ran but needed a new oil pump cause the pressure relief valve was sticking so we kinda met in the middle. I gave him 200 more.

How an anyone appraise a 340 without knowledge of condition and bore?
As to the unknown factor and the 318, I call it at $50 unless someone shows me its better!

I did stop out for a glance. Deffinatley both 1970s. Just figured I'd get some for idea before I actually do decide to dig into them

Not to me , $800 for an engine that needs rebuilt and could be un usable ? .

Not too sure you could get J heads on a 70 year block from the factory. Maybe late year, not 100% sure of that. Just a little note if you didnt know already.

I'd offer him a low ball price as they sit, and higher price if they check out as rebuildable. Tear them down and send them to a machine shop to be blasted and magged.

After looking them over, if you feel good about it offer him 5 for the pair- if something proves to be amiss, you still can recoup your money in parts. Otherwise, it's a stretch for unproven condition but still not insulting to your friend. BUT- I would first see if you can get him to throw a number at you just to make sure you're both in the same ballpark. Maybe there's a few other nuggets in the trailer to sweeten the deal, too.

I seen rusty 340 blocks at the Flings for $500. Add heads, crank, manifolds and intake? Easy 300 more. Just saying. Short of a block cracked down its cam valley or chunk of wall busted out, most anything can be saved. 4.00 Ford spec cylinder sleeves are $25 a piece, if you own a machine shop and can do the labor, a core block plus $200 and you got a perfect STD bore 340. PAW used to sell 8 sleeved 340 blocks in STD. bore.
