AJ's Opinion; what size SBM do I need

Build whatever you want and stop with these stroking of your ego threads about what this or that you wanna shove down peoples necks.

For me, aside from my already magnum 360 truck..I will not be building ANY 360 stroke motors for MY cars. Nothing wrong with a 360, just not MY favorite. Others can do what THEY want, but I'll say it's a waste to build a 360 when you can build a 408 or 410 for a few hundred more and have the grunt to **** on a mofk'n 360 ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT.

Again, it's not that someone is say'n a 318 is better than a 360 or 408 or 440. I think it's simply if someone wants to do a little something to their 318, what's wrong with it?? It could be not everyone is hoping to run a 11.32 with their daily driver. Maybe a nice running 318 that cruises on the highway and will run a 14 second 1/4 mile is all they want... especially if they are on a fixed 500 dollar budget.

I hate giving ppl the red x and out of respect to you im not going to but j disagree with you. The whole bigger is better thing is gone the replacement for displacement is airflow!! Look at all these 5.3 ls engines making 1400 hp with turbos and stock bottom ends! The 5.3 is only 9 CI bigger than a 318 and they are making crazy numbers with them simply with boost! The same can be done with 318s! Granted you can do the same to the bigger ci engines and get similar results but my point is the small engines can get there too. Its more about tuning and efficiency than the biggest engines you can stuff in your car. @318willrun has taught us all that.
The 5.3 GM engine (& other modern engines) of today have one super solid thing over yesteryears engines. Awesome head flow as delivered from the factory without being ported. Come as close as you can, meet or exceed head flow for your engine and it will perform very seriously like today’s engines. But everybody bitches about spending that coin to port a set of heads…. Never mind supercharging or turbo charging.

The GM mention under a pressure device is a bit of a weird introduction in this thread. That’s why I crafted my reply above the way I did.

Yea I went a little bit extreme just saying bigger isn't always better its more about airflow than size. A good set of heads will make more power than cubic inchs

I say build what you can afford and what ya have. I’m only missing a /6 and a 273. One of these did not come in Duster’s and after 70 darts so why....

im serious

boost is a power multiplier
but the more power an engine makes to begin with, the more it will make under boost
100% correct! As Richard Holdner says, build the best NA engine you can and boost will only make it better.
That and “Every cam is a blower cam!” His YouTube channel is worth checking out.

First off...many guys who build engines for a living ignore that useless DCR...

That said I'd buy a set if cheap FT pistons, angle mill the snot off the stock open chamber heads and install a cam around 525 lift/220-230 [email protected] ground in a 106-108 LC.

I got 12-1 compression out of a 360 with J heads and a .250 dome. I think we shaved .050 or more off the heads.

Going flat top and without decking the block you could get around 10-1 compression which would run great on E85.

This combo, with a cast iron intake, 500 Holley two barrel on a +.060 360 produced a nice 440 hp with just a mild bowl rework. This was on a Wissota super stock dirt motor.

We did do an all out rebuild but the final cost came in at under $3700.00

Yep. DCR is at the bottom of my list for things to consider. It’s a useless number. I will be checking cranking compression numbers so I can develop a data base and see if any patterns develop.

That depends. Cam timing has as much or more effect on RPM than air flow does. When I switched from W2 to W5 heads, I kept the shift RPM the same but with the W5 heads I used 14 degrees LESS duration on the intake side and 18 degrees LESS duration on the exhaust side.

Still made power at the same RPM. It made more HP but the RPM a curve was the same.
 
Me I'd use a 360 but internally balanced or might as well just stroke it then but i had mine internally balanced because i didn't want to deal with a big dumb Balancer and a weighted flywheel/flexplate.
I ended up putting it in my dads 64 4 speed valiant and runs smooth as hell 9 yrs later.

I’ve seen “new technology” and I’m less than impressed. That includes the complicated Coyote Ford pile of ****, the weak block of the LS and the highly inefficient hemi head.

I’ve said it before but it bears repeating. I’m a life long N/A guy. None of the above is spectacular without some power adder. I’m following a turbo build here on FABO. Ritter block (far FAR a better than any of the OE blocks above) and I forget the heads. Let’s see what that does.

Also, airflow isn’t the end all of making power.
 
But "I" happen to think a 318 IS better than a 360 at times. What if you don't want the extra cubes because you want to try to get some decent mileage? The 318 fits the bill. V8 power and mileage that's usually better than a slant six. Argue it all you want, the 318 is a good engine. Anybody says anything otherwise is a poser or a Mopar guy and pretty much a fag.

....and I KNOW you will remember this. I've made mention of it before, but got mowed over. EFI did not USED to be considered naturally aspirated. Over the years, N/A has become to be known "without a power adder", but that hasn't always been true.
