TF's on a 318 ???? Oops, another 318 thread...

-
Oh, I didn't suggest you do it, I was just wondering..... still am wondering... LOL

I went on a 35-40 mile road trip to pick up several 360 blocks and cranks for 50.00 each. We went to another friends house that I know but don’t know that runs a 340 in a 4 speed class. He tried his hardest to give me an older 318 block that was spotless. He was telling me that it could be made into this and I could do that with it. I couldn’t tell you five words that he said past 318 but I was probably a “rock-head” for not grabbing that one for free. I can’t honestly tell you how many blocks I have but it’s probably 10 times the amount of blocks I’ve ever hurt or scraped.

you have blocks.... you have heads.... does that make you a "Blockhead" ??? LOL :poke:

The key to extracting more power from any engine, 318s included, is to recognise their strong points & avoid their weak points.

With the 318 I see lack of cubes as a weak point. I see the short stroke as a strong point, able to rpm higher [ relatively speaking ], so chose parts to make more high rpm power & get the performance from it that way.

Agreed. Like latest engine masters. 331 sbc, right cam, heads, intake and carb. 550hp @ 7900

7900!!! Eye are popping out of my head in that rpm!
WOW!
The same idea works on a 318 or any other engine. Like Bewy said, the bore size is a biggest limiter. Getting away from the small bore as much as possible is a good idea when building a 318. If you’d lucky enough to have a thick wall and have the ability to go more than a normal .030 over bore, I’d do it. Heck, if you can get a 4.00, safely, I’d go there.

If you’d limited to the stock bore or just .030 over, you’ll still be fine. The old adage of easy air in and easy air out will help make that power.

it's obviously a 4'' stroke crank in a 318 block. he mentions everything about the engine but somehow he forgets to mention the crank or the cubic inch? :wtf:

Smoke and mirrors my friend, smoke and mirrors…

what he says he has and what he has is the question , i always tell people i'm running a 340 so what if it's really a 426 , they all look the same . if he is running 10's it ain't no 318

I think it can be done…..
Now if I only had expendable cash to throw away like the US government….

People have no imagination, until someone builds one it can't be done, Lot of guys that only had built motors in the 70's don't think 360 can be done up since no one was back then same with 400, Look at ford 400M everyone thought they were boat anchors since there was no factory performance ones even though everyone knows there just a stroked tall deck cleveland which everyone love and praises, As soon as you build something under 340 cid and 4" bore all ability for performance some how magically disappears, Engine Master competition proves if you add 300+ cfm heads with cr and 240-260 high lift cam and it gonna make power no matter which old engine they do.

^^^^^^^
To be fair, you're right. when I started out in the mid 70's 360's and 400's weren't even considered.
by the late 70's we were putting 383's in a-bodies and replacing 318's in B-bodies with 440's.
We bypassed 340's in the junk yard and went straight to big blocks.
My 1st 383 in my 67 Fastback was out of a 68 Charger that we put a 440 in.

spareparts run 10s with a 318....

Exactly! But that’s ones call to do or not to do, that’s is the question one must ask themselves.

You mean with a early "X" block at 420+ cubic inches with w2 heads and LOTS of nitrous. Grudge racing is all about bullshitting your competitors.. "hey, it's just a 318 wink wink"

that 318 i had would have easily run 10’s with a roller cam and some compression in a more typical 3000 pound bracket car
Electric water pump and fan would have been an upgrade too

LOL... Stop yourself with that.... he offered me that motor for 4500 bucks. It was a late 60's 318 truck engine with a forged crank, W2's. 150 shot. Don't spread Fake News ... :D I know the exact ET it ran.... and you'd be more than shocked.

He had a couple different motors, hard to keep up with which one was which

With or without the magical pssss psssss. I guarantee it can be done NA the question is at what cost.

I don't see where people see extra money, If you were to do a 10's 340/360/408/416 it probably trick flow solid roller single plane 850 cr good crank and rods what would a 318 need that's all that different? It's only 7% smaller than a 340 so it would only need to spin that much maybe 10% to makeup for the airflow loss by the bore.

All this 318 conversation is seriously making me consider building a W2 318 combo and see if I can run 10s with it....what say you guys?

I would love to see it. AND, I have no doubt you'd achieve it. Especially if you had the converter/gear behind it needed.
