Nasty fire for sure. Was a fire fighter for many years and had a garage fire that the owner stored about 1,000 rounds of shot gun shells in a shelf in his garage. Yea sounded like the 4th of July. Fought that fire from a distance till all the "pop corn was popped" LOL

Ever seen this footage?

They had a fireworks factory just a little too close to a residential neighborhood

We had an electric scooter factory fire a few months ago, lithium ion batteries started exploding and shooting out of the building like bottle rockets. Pretty entertaining to say the least!

Those boys did a good job on that. I don't think that house next door even got a singe.

...and how in the WORLD do people live like that? All crammed in there together like that. I bet you can hear the neighbors when they fart. I couldn't stand it.

I had a scare with the pellet stove the other night. Woke up to smoke filling the basement and main floor. Still haven't figured out what happened. Seems to be working just fine now but I'm having trust issues.

Lord have mercy I can understand that. Could wind from outside had anything to do with it? Dang if I wouldn't try to get to the bottom of that one.

I don't think so. Luckily the PO had used some foil tape around the joints of the vent pipe. That stuff smoke and stank to beat the band and that smell is what woke me up. When I got up the pellet stove was off and cool and I didn't know what was happening. Once I figured it out, I found the pellet stove had shut its self off and one portion of the vent pipe had its inner layer melted!

I regularly maintain the stove, cleaning and vacuuming.

Trust me, I wish I knew the answer.

I may do that for ease of mind. They are so simple. I have several buddies that I talked to while I troubleshot this weekend. But its tough when it seems to be operating fine. I'll probably put it on a very low setting while I'm gone tomorrow. Maybe off since it's warmed up slightly outside.

LOL that would be fun to watch but hope no one got hurt.

I'm not sure. I've gone through the manual for the stove several times and it doesn't say anything about a damper. I know some pellet stoves have them I don't think mine does.
Mine don't and never had that happen. Be safe there buddy.

Everyone was safe. It was a defensive fire from the beginning, so we kept a good distance.
Never seen a Lithium battery catch on fire but after hearing what you went through I guess I learned a bit.

No smoke detectors/CO detectors? Gusts of wind can push smoke & gasses out the draft into the room, but a melted inner-wall sounds like a soot flash-fire in the stove pipe.....

The pellet stove doesn't build up much of any soot. Ash for sure. But not much of that is in the vent pipe. I pulled the vent pipe down before winter and cleaned it. I'm at a loss. Left it running today.

I do think I'll add a fresh air intake. Seems like it would just make the stove more efficient.

The detector upstairs didn't go off. I was surprised. Wife keeps a ceiling fan on and I'm wondering if it was pushing the smoke away. The detector down stairs was disconnected at some point. That one's on me and has been rectified.

Just a thought: There's only two ways that smoke could get into the house from the heater/stove. Air blowing down the vent or blockage of the vent. Could something have temporarily blocked the vent from the outside??

What I found was that the vent pipe was not put together properly. The PO had put put some of that foil tape around all the joints, I'm assuming to block smoke that was leaking out. That tape has a paper layer that burnt up and the rubbery adhesive is what stank so terribly. I believe all the smoke came from that tape.

I appreciate all the thoughts. I'll look at whatever you guys suggest. I'm going to call the manufacturer today and see what they say.

Oh....I see. So that's the third way to get smoke in the house.........a leak in the vent pipe (below the ceiling)!!!! That should solve the problem??

I knew a feeler who had a garage fire with a torpedo heater ,said he was at the front of the car under the hood lokked up and saw the rear end of the car was in flames...said he go the hell out of there...
