Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

-
I tell you, we must be livin wrong. I can BARELY have the hobby I do with Vixen. Dammit.

I got really into guns when I was in my 20s. Making decent money and living in a $500/month run down apartment without a girlfriend or wife. I had money to burn so it went into guns, and the car.

Well good morning to all of you GDB (Guns,Dogs and Blades) followers. Today I have to begin practicing for an upcoming Instructors class I am attending. I have enrolled in a instructors class for red dot from the Modern Samurai Project. The founder’s standards are very high and I fear I am a bit long in the tooth for the class. He is all about fast draw and small targets at high speed. His teaching is world renowned and his classes sell out months in advance. He is a top tier instructor. I am far less interested in attaining a black belt and far more interested in becoming a better instructor. Often times at the range when I am doing practice drills for this match or that one folks will kind of stand around and watch. Invariably they interrupt my training session and ask questions. It used to annoy me but then I decided to utilize it as a training aid figuring it replicated the distractions you incur at a match that tend to pull your focus away. Long story short often times I am rocking a red dot and felt I could not adequately answer the spectators question on how I accomplished XY or Z. Thus my pursuit of better training as an instructor. I figure if I cannot explain it adequately I do not fundamentally understand it. For sake of this class I will go with my SIG X5 Legion with Delta Pro red dot. I am going to utilize a strong side IDPA drop holster which I will get penalized for, but I am just not an appendix carry guy so in my mind why practice that which I will never do! He is all about the appendix carry. Again I am much less concerned about attaining his black belt as I am about evolving as an instructor.

Appendix carry is a tough one to get used to. I’m not there yet but I want to be.

I just think realistically I got to much muffin top! No more complex than that.
I feel you on that. Not quite as streamlined as we used to be. I've started using a simple IWB crossdraw with my Ronin 4.25" Commander and am starting to like it. It's comfortable enough and I can actually get to the pistol from any position. The appendix carry is tough on my shoulder and near impossible seated in the truck.

Hey buddy great thread you got going.
Guns I like guns and have a few...and you can never have too many according to my wife.
I carried a gun daily 30 years for my past employer. I've done a lot of training and shooting over the years.
I look forward to seeing, doing, and continuing to learn something here...thanks!!

I love dogs, but I don't trust them unless I know them. I have a dog, and I respect not everyone will love it. Here are a few reasons why I don't trust them. Some due to the owners, and some due to the fact animals have their own mind.
  • "Smokey loves company!"..... yeah, thanks for the claw marks down my door
  • "Smokey has never bitten anyone before"..... yeah, 17 stitches later, now we know
  • "Smokey is so happy to see you again".... yeah, I was dressed to go somewhere, now I have mud from my chest down to my knee
  • "Smokey never goes in his own yard".... yeah, thanks, let me get my shovel
  • "don't worry, Smokey's bark is worse than his bite".... yeah, ok lady, I'll happily take your word for it

This is cool im glad to see this thread. I enjoy doing amateur gunsmithing. I enjoy working on them just as much as I do shooting them. Kinda like I ke cars I suppose I spend more time working in them than driving them lol here are a few samples of guns I've built thru the years. The first is a Spanish mauser I bought as just a bare action and built my self every part dang near on this gun has been modified or altered. It is chambered in 450 bushmaster.

Thanks Zman, as we have discussed over the years privately your wealth of experience and knowledge is a great addition to the thread. There are several on here with similar back grounds to ours. The AR knowledge makes me dizzy, these guys are serious builders. You and I are but mere trigger pullers in comparison! Hah!

Out here in the sticks of northeast Arkansas when working and the wife is home it was a must to always have a good 4 legged friend, I never let my friends out of my yard, and my friends never let other animals in that was running stray around here, we walked our perimeter daily as a pup, and I would fire my side arm every now and then as we did.
When I go somewhere for a tournament (pool shooting or a car show my friend stuck to my wife like glue until I got home, the he would never leave my side.
I miss my buddy, yes, his name was Buddy and we took great care of what he was feed and groomed.

Thank you Buddy for the 15 years of service.

Is this a deer rifle?
It could be. I haven't hunted with it yet but it would make a good short to mid range brush gun. Its short light and well balanced. 450 bushmaster is capable of taking deer sized game out 150-200 yards. Last year I hunted with my home built 338 federal built on a ruger action.

Wow buddy was beautiful. I have to say boxers are the most affectionate and glued to the hip breed ive ever had. My boxer won't leave my side even when im working on my car he has to lay right on top of me.

I'm joining the thread so I can pay attention to the knowledge here.
AR's are great. I often "borrow" and shoot a 375 socom.
The 458 is ok, but for some reason the 375 just hits every target.
Half dollar size hole on a 1000 lb hog at 200 yards.
Of course, I'm also super impressed by the 204. Also prefer it on the ar frame. Amazing bullet. 4K plus a second. That thing reach's out and touch's.

Mostly, I swear by the 44 ruger super red hawk. Both long and short. Always fires. Ultimate reliability.

I can honestly say I've never fired any of the socom rounds. Funny story I was in the process of building a 458 on an ar when I decided on the 450 bushmaster for the mauser action I actually sold the 458 parts to fund the mauser

That is East Coast, I have never attended. Perhaps some of the East Coast folks have? I have heard a lot (positive) about it tho.

You said you enrolled in the MS red dot course so I didn’t know if you already took the pistol course out there too. Figured you were on the east coast.

Funny, I was building a 450 bush when the company sent me 458 parts as they apparently need glasses. When I got the 458 parts, I ended up trading those parts for 375 parts. After building the 375 I realized I really liked the round. Eventually get back to the 458.
