How much did a gallon of gas cost when you first started driving?

$2.18 in the summer of 2005. That's when I started driving by myself. Before that I was driving but my parents never let me go anywhere by myself. I turned 19 in summer of 05

I remember filling up my Jeep for under $20, so gas would have ben right around $1 a gallon back in the 97 time frame.

1983

About 83 cents for leaded regular.

E-10 was available (but not called that) from stations of different names but all had orange signage.

It was about 10-15 cents cheaper and didn't hurt my '66 Carter 2 barrel.

$2.00 was a very common amount to purchase back then.

In S. Texas it got down to 16.9/gallon during the 60s gas wars. We could collect a bunch of empty coke bottles and sell them for 5 cents each. It wouldn't be long before you have enough money to pay for 1/2 tank of gas to go cruising!!!

I worked at an Amoco gas station when I was in high school, 1987-1990. At our station it was .99 for regular, 1.09 for mid grade, and 1.19 for premium. We were the highest around our area but those prices never changed the entire time I was there.

When I got my first car running in 1966, I was working at an Humble station pumping gas, checking under the hood, washing windshields & checking tire pressure. Gas back the ranged from .18 to .25, depending upon the gas wars. The were 4 stations on the corner, Humble. Sinclair, Gulf & Texaco. Over 4 summers, I worked at all of them at least once.

Average pump gas ‘87 octane for me was .99 cents.
As a new driver in ‘84, the best I could routinely find with some hunting around was .97 cents.

1964 I think it was $.29 or maybe that was before they had a price war? I got a after school and all day Sat job at the grocery store. I think it paid $.65/hr. I was pooping in TALL cotton!!

19.9 in the twin cities area, late '60s early '70s. One station was going out of business and put up a big painted wood sign 45.9 so no one would stop in for gas. Lol. We used to drive all day and cruise all night!

My first car out of high school was a Vega. (Yeah, I know. Well, it ended up with a nitroused 327 and a narrowed 8 3/4). For the first two years, I could NOT put $3 of gas in it, the tank wasn't big enough.....

I remember my Dad pulling in to a gas station in our 68 Charger RT and if it took $3 to fill it was sucking fumes!!!

In 1979 the year before I started driving gas was around .50 a gallon , by the time I was driving in 1980 it was a dollar. Anyone else remember gas rationing where you could only buy gas on odd or even days depending on your license plate number??? MAN I'M OLD!!!

I remember paying 1.99 about 4-5 years ago. My little corner of Maryland here is lucky, some of the lowest prices in the state. There was a lot of press a while back about a decade ago about OPEC overproducing, which usually drives prices down. They won't make that mistake again.
