I have a 318 that I got on a trade while back, was it my 69 valiant. I recently picked up a 2wd ramcharger that I plan on installing it in. Yesterday I finally got around to separating it from the 727 and got it on a stand took of the car pan. I noticed a chip in one of the journals how big of an issue is this? My ramcharger currently has a complete 360 in it but im not sure what condition it is in. My plan is too make it a daily so im not really trying to make any power out of it. The 318 seemed to have ran fine in my valiant and does look like it has been rebuilt has a small cam.

That looks like a forged crankshaft and that's a forging flaw. Probably been there since day one.

Not sure if that's going to cause you problems or not. Definitely would take it to a machine shop.

Good eye. I think you're right. Probably wouldn't hurt a thing to polish the rough edges down with a small grinder.

I was thinking the samething but wasnt 100%. Figured id get some of you guys opinion.

Definitely looks like the the crack is traveling, not sure if it is repairable by welding or not. Looks like the crack started from an inclusion. You got to take the crank out and have it inspected all around the counter weight that is cracked. If it is an inclusion, they tend to be full of impurities.

the crack that extends from the end of that gash is more concerning to me than the big ugly part to be honest.

there's a lot of plays here and that scale swings from: ship it! to: let's do a new crank.

how much of a gambler are you?

Is that a 318 crate engine mopar performance sold in the 90's?
Are the rod journals drilled with a lightning hole?

It does look like its spreading in the picture, but yesterday I dont remember noticing that. Ill see if I can get better pictures possibly tomorrow. I honestly was not looking to spend anymore then a truck pan and a pickup. Might just work with the 360 thats in it.

Not sure traded a rotted duster for it about two years ago. Guy said it was rebuilt and was for a 1968 dart.

If that was a crate engine, I'd have it totally gone through, product quality was terrible during the damlier era. Those guys were assholes, they sold junk, not to mention the MP electronic conversion distributors the sold made by Accel, totally worthless. Those German assholes totally drove chrysler into the ground. Got to hand it to those stellantis guys for trying to turn it around even though they are a bunch of forgien idiots as well.

Anything can be repaired if you throw enough $ at it and including that crank if you use the right people. I'd talk to a diesel mechanic and find the machine shop they use to refurbish their cranks. A good diesel machine shop regularly welds cranks.

If there is no vin number stamped on the pad, look for the stamping on the block, drivers side right under the head. I'd look at mine , but it is 30 miles away at the machine shop LOL. Cause you guessed it, it was a POS day one straight from MP.

Ill see if I can look tomorrow, wouldnt be surprised guy did say it was rebuilt so maybe it had problems as well.

Those Crankshafts are readily available used with a little patience. I would just find another and move on.
Yeah im going too call around tomorrow, if its too much might just consider that or just work with the 360 in it.

Will you regret it if you don’t replace it (the crank), and it causes a problem down the road? Or breaks? I know I would….

Or, if you used it, would this be like a little monkey on your back every time you ran it?

Now’s the time to replace it, IMO.

Your right im probably gonna regret it later down the road, or it'll be on my mind every time I drive it. Im gonna look into getting it repaired or replacing it.

I also have 340 cranks but a 340 won't work. The front and rear journals are gun drilled due to the heavier rods used in 340's. You need a 273 or a 318 crank to avoid balancing issues.
