Oil be darn

Just talked to the shop, the valve job need to be redone and there was virtually no bowl work done. For the price to fix these up I might as well just pick up some speedmasters. My only concern is will the bigger valves harm the low end response this motor has. Mine has the original 188 intake valves and smaller exhaust.

I think the SM(or pro maxx or Ede)are the smart move.

Unless the shop you’re dealing with offers to do your current heads for a very friendly price.

Plus, SM might have a Black Friday sale soon.

They want 575 for the valve job with bowl work to be determined.

Guides are good?
Ex seats not recessed?
Is all the hardware in decent condition?
Springs are appropriate for the cam?

Exactly what do you get for the $575?
Cleaning, reface valves, refinish seats, assemble heads…..flat milling?

The price doesn’t seem out of line, but the SM heads flow way more, and everything is new.

Bowl blending…..figure 2-4hrs depending on how involved they get with it.

They quoted me prices on the SM of around 1100 and I figure with the bowl blending I will be about there. So why not save 35 lbs and get the nice upgrade?

Is it the speedmaster website that always has the black Friday sales, or one of the warehouses?
I always seem to miss it

They said the valve job was "horrible" with the guides needing to be redone. And the bores were shiney which contributed. They speculated the engine wasnt clean when it was run and that led to the problems. They feel the crank can be cleaned up and the cam is ok.

Just as a reference: In August, I had my 915 heads done.

-New guides
-"performance" valve job
-clean up deck surface
-machine for, and install Viton seals
-bead blast

$678.40

They had been ported previously. I spent the money because they were ported, plus I'm trying to watch how fast the dollars fly out the window.

Didn’t you supply new valves……… and assembled the heads yourself?

That was a very fair price for what they did, imo.

It would have been more here.
I'm glad to hear that. It's been a long time since I had anything like that done. The shop is just north of Philadelphia, in Bucks County, to consider geography in the pricing.

Yeah I think that's goin the right way, but don't forget to throw in a little to have the Speedmasters checked out. Make sure the valve job is good and the guides aren't tight.

That wasn't bad at all.

Did you mention if you have headers or not?

Grabbing a set of checked-out, CNC ported heads with larger valves would wake your motor up nicely without taking away too much if any bottom end.

You can gasket match your intake to the heads yourself.

So on the fence between speedmaster or trick flow. This is a peppy street build that will occasionally see spirited runs. Most of its life will
below 3500. My cam has a lift of .515.
