Car is supposed to be at Pomona to race in 16? Days. Not a problem. Won’t have a replacement piston till next week sometime. Gonna roll bearings in it and brake clean what I can out of it. Dingle ball the bore and pour the coals to it.

Hey @TT5.9mag there’s cold snacks in the fridge with your name on em.

You know I’m there. I still cannot fathom how the middle ring land breaks out of a piston. I’ve got calls/texts out to guys smarter than me to see what they say. Anyone here on FABO have any ideas? Look close, it torched a second ring, and broke the middle ring land. But didn’t touch the top of the piston or top ring.

I was reading back through to see if the ring gaps were mentioned but I have not seen that yet. Any chance it actually butted the second ring, breaking it first and torching it second? I am not experienced in boost, so I am asking honestly if that can happen.

I don't really understand how it can get enough heat between the rings like that, unless it just broke first and then oil got in.

Edited for spelling. Change, not change.

I will send the pics to some piston engineers at work tomorrow. Not sure who will be in on a Friday, but can chase it again on Monday.

I thought the same thing. And asked if there was a way we could measure the 2nd ring gap, but it’s in too many pieces.

Believe I set the gaps to .030 top ring .032 2nd. Had plenty of ring gap in it. With that being said it’s not out of the realm of possibility that I messed up while rushing it together, I’d just think it would have shown its face much sooner. I won’t rule anything out.

To me, the shiny ends of the crack is typical of chatter/movement. Seems both ends started and broke out the center.

There's a pretty interesting total seal video on ring gaps with lake speed junior you might wanna check out.

How bout possibly breaking the second ring land on assembly? Pushing the piston down with the second ring not compressed all the way?

Used the ARP 4.320 compressor. From memory none of them caught awhile going in.
Trying to think of possibilities that don’t involve cumbustion gas. It’s so hard for me to see that happening from heat in the chamber. Unless the top ring gap was like an inch wide.
