Lower Rad hose spring?

I read some older threads on new thermostats and hose replacement. Ran into the issue of the use of an internal spring reinforcement.

I remember seeing hoses in the past that had a sling in them.

Anyway is the general consensus to still use a spring as a headge against hose collapse?

I see where CJ pony parts and one of the large classic car parts companies has them available.

What say you on this controversial subject.

This was a spring in a quarter million mile 318 that was a desert car filled with straight water:

The only car I've ever personally seen with a radiator hose collapsed was a Chevy Caprice PPV, and it collapsed several times over the life of the vehicle.

Ain't seen it in any other car yet.

Can't say I'd recommend the spring unless you're planning on the car running 24/7

How much does it weight? Will that slow down the car? Use the spring.

Use welding wire, fencing wire, wire coat hanger. Wrap it around a broom handle, & there's your spring....

they're largely unneeded these days due to advancements in hose material and construction.

these ain't your daddies lower hoses no more. they're multi layered and built with state of the art materials that avoid collapse while providing rigidity.

When you finally decide to make your "ounce of prevention" spring be sure to curl the ends so they have no chance of poking through the hose.

They are, at least oem, modern vehicles with 150-300 thousand miles and 25-30 years old still sporting their original hoses.

i don't know about that man. maybe an older hose or one that's been in service for a spell, mayyyybe.

it's not like a high flow pump is pulling down like ol' scabby sally down at the rub n' tug who can suck a golf ball thru 10ft of garden hose.

i don't know man, i haven't taken a ballooned up soft hose off a car in a long, long time; or done full "repipe" jobs ever two or three years, where that used to be common place 10~20 years ago...

this right here. i'm finding the plastic connectors are failing before the bodies of the hoses do!

It's the upper hose on my 408 that collapses. Might try adding a homemade spring.

I purchased the spring, from CJ Pony Parts, and put it in my lower radiator hose. I also shortened the lower hose to help soften the angle of the turn (318 car).
