So my girlfriends family always picks name from a hat and her sister got me and is looking at getting a tool to add to my collection to help me on my car. i want your opinions on what tool would you want for christmas?

Jon

DRILL DOCTOR.

If I had one of those, the 30 pound bucket of dull drill bits I have would be productive again.

what would be a good welder for a beginner? i have always wanted to learn just haven't had the money to get one and don't know which one would be best to learn on.

I think seein as it,s your g/friends sis,a resonably priced vacuum guage is always useful for timing and setup. What do you think???I just bought a Lincoln mig welder on sale for $600 Can. regular $800.that would be expensive for her??

Lincoln mig welder.Best on gas if you can wing it.

Your marring the wrong sister. Christmas gifts are to be a showing of affection, not a life long statement. I would be tickled with a set of Vise Grips, Large and Small. This year my sister wanted to know what I would like for Christmas. I told her a new billfold. I had washed mine and it split. They also bought me a 155 piece tool set at Lowe's that only cost about 60 bucks but that was their statement to me.
I was overwhelmed. They also gave me one of the small magnet screw holders for when you work on you car. I feel so lucky to have someone that cares that much.

My gift to them was a new halogen free standing light system. They just started having to work on their 62Stude Hawk engine and their old ones had quit. I bougth them and then drove the 65 miles to their house so they could have them to use. They were were about to have to go shopping but they live in the country. I live in a small city and have many more shopping outlets. I filled a need they had and I felt good about it. To me, that is what christmas careing is about.

being that the sister is 10 yrs older than i am and is already married with a kid on the way, i think i'm doing good with the one i have now.

Santa is bringing me a new floor jack and a transmission jack. I have wrestled a transmission for the last time to only have it slide off the floor jack.

Some thing a little less expensive then the other guys ideas, Im dieing for a nice 1/4 ratchet set. I could use a new angle die grinder too, I seem to go through those, LOL

I asked for gift cards to sears this year, I can pick my own tools this way.

You said ANY tool, so... A rotisserie is first. Now, on to more realistic things...

One of these is surprisingly handy:

You can get em at Northern Tool or Harbor Freight. Of course, it's also handy to have a selection of steel in different diameters to press stuff with.

A drill press is nice too.

if you want a mig, look into the hobart line up. they are great machines made in usa, excelent warranty and customer service. they are made on the same line as the similar miller migs. you cant go wrong with a miller, lincoln, or hobart. hobart will almost alsways be the cheapest. for a beginer you dont need infinite adjustable voltage control. its just a preference. i am a certified welder and i actually prefer taps over infinite adjustable. a 140 amp 110v machine will weld anything on your car. oh yeah and you can almost always find a deal on the hobart stuff at TSC, or norther tool.

i have a compressor and have access to a hydraulic press at my shop as well as a lift. i could learn how to tig or arc weld on my bosses welder but i rather not screw it up since it is an industrial one. so far i'm leaning towards a small welder to practice one and get good. but still open for ideas. wish money was no object here.
