Chip Foose or Barry White

-
I have never met Barry White but I have met Chip Foose this spring at Mopars at the Strip.
He is a genuine nice guy 8) I only asked for his autograph and he ended up drawing me a sweet challenger:cheers:

I would rather own one of Foose's cars. I like some subtle custom touches - tucked bumpers, etc. Without those, it's just a car with a paint job. I like to see a finished product that is something my friends and I couldn't do in our shop, or couldn't have the vision to create.

To get an idea what Chip's capable of, check out "Impression". It looks sorts like a Ford, but all the body panels were made from scratch. You won't see Barry's cars winning the Riddler.

Chip gave an award to a friend at 2006 Autorama. He was really cool to talk to and didn't carry the attitude that most of the big name guys have.

I don't know who Barry is (I haven't watched TV in almost 5 years) and as for Chip, I respect him as a car guy but the man makes some butt *** ugly cars.

Gene Winfield and Bill Hines are the gods of custom cars.

Oh yeah....F GEORGE BARRIS and BOYD!!!!!

Neither..Foose has to put those nasty big bling bling wheels on everything and he two-tones or three tones everything he paints...White is just a "hack" plain and simple!!!

You haven't missed a lot, TV has been on a downward slope for years. Especially Speed and Spike TV.

You hit the nail on the head with Gene and Bill, very talented guys. I do like Chip though, he does have some nice cars, not a lot but some. The personality and attitude thing does go a long way with me.

I agree with you about George and Boyd, and I have a lot of Barris memorabila since my uncle owns the original Sonzogni 50 Merc but as a person he is an a$$, he didn't even go the the Merc reunion back in February, his nephew was there as well as 40 of the most well known custom Mercs in history including Sam's Merc and the Hirohata but George was nowhere to be seen.

I'm sorry but I don't like Foose's builds. The "terraCuda" was horrifying. I like more traditional builds that are more like restorations.....that's just me. I don't have anything against sensible upgrades ie brakes, ignition, period correct looking engine compartments (strokers rule). I like period correct race stuff too. Shaved door handles, 20 inch wheels, etc ala Foose...........not for me. I would take a nice 15 " ralley wheel over a foose wagon wheel any day.
I am old I guess......I would give my car to Bob Mosher or even a guy like Steve Magnante before a Foose type builder.

Foose for me as well. Barry White comes off as a total *** but who knows, he may just be doing it for TV, I was never sure if Boyd was doing it for the drama or if it was real either? After all these car building shows are more drama than building, I figure it's so your wife will watch it with you, you get the build, they get the soap opera :-D

Like I told my dad the other day when we had the "who's your favorite car guy" talk. Sam Barris and Bill Hiens built them and George takes the credit.

Barry is an A hole if I ever run into that Guy I am going to puch him right in the teeth. The Guy is nothing but a FU**I*G Hack

That was truly an awesome experience!
that's chip once he meets you he doesn't forget you he bought me a hot dog one time and gave me a hat
but really my self id rather have there money so I could build my Owen cars

I like most of what Chip does, but I don't care for rubber band tires on monster wheels on old cars, and what is it with all his cars not having outside mirrors? is it just me or are these built to show and not drive?

The paint sucks on some of the cars. I have not seen a Mopar yet that he tried to put stripes on that looked as good as the tape stripes from the factory and the 17 or larger rally looking wheels, NOT FOR ME

Barry White, I'd put him in the *** catagory. I did get to ride in the Plum Crazy satelite/GTX think it was a 71, seen the build on TV then it ended up at the Mecum Auction last year and the owner drove it across the block but I rode with him and we talked cars for the time I was in it. I'm thinking it was in the low 60's at that auction. Think it went thru again this year too, but different owner and less money.

Yeah it has a hemi, yeah it has electronic shift and paddle shift on wheel, but this car came out of junk yard, is not a GTX and fit and finish is good but not great. front end sits too low, back too high, just not for me.

At least on the cars Chip does he listens to the owners/friends & family and does a nice job. I do not believe they can build a car in 7 days even working 24/7 with a huge team of craftsmen. How much has to be done after the cameras stop rolling to fix & finish the cars correctly.

I have some friends who are friends of Chips and they only have good things to say about him.

I would have a hard time letting someone else do my car. I have an idea in my head and have never seen a car built that there isn't some things i would want to change.

I changed my Prowler after getting it. I changed stuff as i was building my Dart when i didn't like how something looked.

My 2 Cents

Chip

Barry :pain10:

Dead or alive Boyd seemed to be a total acehole!
How many of his so called peeps ended up with the Chipster?
I wish someone would write into Chip and Overhaulin and turn in ABB & BOF to be overhauled!
That would be totally awesome!!!
Hey Chip,
If you're checkin' the site right now, PLEASE put BOF on overhaulin and take our blues away!!!!8)

Barry White?
Never heard of him till his show wrecks to riches. 10 junkers to show stoppers in as many months.
If Barry's daughter is reading the site right now, I have to tell ya, you got the wrong guys buying your junkers! I have never seen as high a prices as you are paying for your rust buckets! Next one you guys want to buy, PM me first. I'll bird dog the car and get all the parts so Chris doesn't have to!
Need an expiditer PM me!!
By the way, we are well on our way to getting Fern done in a month. Well, not "DONE" so to speak but at least braving the winter in style!!8)

Chip, Do us a solid huh?
Turn BOF into a creature of class, not the Hoosier back holler runnin, junk yard boggin, loud, angry, B.W.A. that she is now.
She even got me a warning ticket at 4:45am the other day on the way to Double D's for coffee. 62 in a 45! She was doin it not me I was still asleep!!
Maybe ABB would cheer up too!

I guess I should qualify this. From what I know about Chip Foose he is a real car guy and not a poser. Buddies of mine have met him as well and he is pretty genuine and a good guy. I 'm just not a fan of his style.

No Overhaulin been reruns since 2008

was rumors of a different producer starting it back up again?

What a bummer. Life is normal. Just when you really start to liking something that works, they take it off the shelves, never to be found again!!

Gotta admit when I saw the threads titles I was thinking: "so, do you like Foose's car designs better than the gentle bass tones of Barry White's singing..."

So the guy's name on the show is Barry White, huh? Hadn't paid much attention since I saw parts of the GTX build and wasn't impressed. Haven't watched the show since. Wasn't really impressed with the way he was constantly bitching his guys out about BS like wheel selection or they way they were putting things together that had to be redone to get it down the road.

Not really impressed with some of Foose's overall designs and builds. Seems every Mopar has to have a Hemi and Gear Vendors overdrive. They all get huge oversized wheels and all get two or three tone paint. Seems the guy likes to play with colors. But I do know that he must treat his employees better than Coddington did, since some of his guys came from Coddington's shop. Usually Coddington's top guys to boot. That says a lot about the man. (Wasn't Foose a Coddington employee once?) The fact that he seems to get a real kick out of the show says a lot to me, too. Sure he's making money on it. The show is covering overhead, but the idea that he's building cars for folks who normally couldn't afford his services...

Either show, though, beats the hell out of Pimp My Ride... hmmm, let's see, let's take this old Luv pick up, slap a fancy interior in it, shove it full of electronics, yeah that's it! Engine still smokes, brakes still grind, but it's got big wheels and a loud stereo!

I have noticed in the thread a few comments about Coddington's self imposed deadlines and cutting corners. Ever noticed that as the show progressed some of those same builds were sitting back at the shop with the hoods open or partially disassembled? Always seemed to me that the deadline was for TV drama and the car had to come back in so it could be finished right. (Actually read that in a blog somewhere.) With the prices he charged, if I were the customer, TV be damned, the car better be done right to start with, no going back unless it was for routine maintainence!

Look at the class of person that has their car done on "Pimp My Ride"

That's like having your car done at your local Earl Scheib. Have you ever noticed the door jambs or under the hood on one of those cars? It apears they just rattle can them black and sometimes through some cheap chrome parts on them.

That was my point. Can these guys actually build a car that will run, stop, and drive reliably or do they just worry about the kid who wants the big stereo, the PS3 in his trunk ("Hey, Ma, going out to the driveway to play some games with the homies! Leave the porch light on for me!") and the wheels that will get stolen just as soon as he pulls into the Gas and Go?
Oh, they put the show on MTV...sorry, 'nuff said.

My choice is Chip Foose. He just seems like a "Car Guy" in that he appreaciates these classic cars and genuinely tries to put as much attention to detail in all of his restoration work. The O.P. should have put a poll up for this one.

Foose is an artist (literally), whether you like what he does with his cars or not (sometimes I do, sometimes I don't). He's also a customizer. If you like stock or restos, you're probably not gonna like his cars.

Barry White is more of a bolt-on, build it and sell it businessman. ANYONE with enough money and resources could build the cars he builds.

For those of you that think Foose can only build cars with big wheels and things like that... he built this too... I didn't take these pics but saw it at autorama... was a sweet ride. It's the kind of car you have to see in person though, because the pics don't do it justice.
