The $5,800.00 mistake

-
I can totally relate to you wanting a 100pt show paint job. However, those vehicles that have them do not get driven. Not even into the trailer in many cases I've seen. You chose a custom color. However even with dept and various pigments and flake... that touch up should not cost $5800. As was said. That's the thick paint on a corner. Not the center of a panel. It can be repaired, matched, and properly hand blended and you'll never see any tape line for less than 1/4 of that cost. If I was the insurance company I would want to fully document the scratch, fully document the repair, then I'd drop you as too much of a risk. If you want to drive it, accept that there will be damage you cannot control. If you want to show it, treat it as a show car needs to be. No running (leaks, soot, carbon) and no driving (scratches, risk) and wash it with distilled water (spots), and never re-use a sponge or mit, and use clay, and no pets near it.. and no outdoor shows (birds). Because that is the commitment to a true show car. If it were me, I would have listened more when the first paint guy said "Are you sure you want that one? Because Acura has a very similar base/clear system and it can be fixed...":D My customer's car has that Acura color and it's very, very close. But not as large a flake.

Here you go.....500 miles on it and 5 months since completed..5yr project.

I'm not trying to brag but this paint job is WOW!
I made it to 3 big shows in 2009 and won best paint at 2.
Best of show at all 3.
And to top it off it won a Builder choice Award at Goodguy's Kansas 2009.

Every person at the shows that stops to talk to me tells me the same thing....paint is the best/most beautiful they have ever seen...they could be lying or have been blinded by the metal flake reflection.:toothy10:

I know there is better paint jobs in the world but for me this is the best I will ever have and I will try till I die to keep it that way.:stop:

This is why I keep my bondo filled car the way it is. I don't want something I can't drive.

That is gorgeous man, no doubt, but I still say it can be matched and blended by someone who knows what they are doing without going through the hassle of a repaint.

One more thing...I see that a lot of you are claiming that this should not cost $5800.00 or that a simple blend is the cure.

Of those that have made this claim, how many own a body shop? And I don't mean part time painters....I'm talking about OWNERS and OPERATORS of custom paint and body shops.

Just curious....also whomever claims to be the O/O of a shop....please put the link to your shop here so I can see what you build.

I love to see other shops work.

These people do know what they are doing by the way....they have produced many award winning cars and many cars that end up in the major magazines.

Don't hate or tell me about why you would never do a high end paint job on your car cause it's BS.

If you could afford it and you loved your car you would do it.

Yeah, I think you need to talk to some other shops owners to get some professional opinions on this.
Don't just take someone's word who has seen some nice touch up jobs like me.

have fun, but don't drive it near mine cause you might get tire buggers all over yer hood and windshield and that might cost your retirement to clean off.lol

nah man, I don't have nice paint jobs and don't do body work either so what do I know.
You have a very nice paint job.8)

A 100 point car in what catagory? Not in the "Original" catagory. Seems that you have the ability to spend massive amounts of money on paint jobs and cars in general. Is it your painter that requires you to re-paint the entire car? or you. If it's your painter then I would find a new one. If it's you then spend your money as you wish. If I were you're insurance company I would think real hard about insuring you after this claim. But what do I know I just enjoy my old ugly car knowing that around the bend it could be all over.

Well you have insurance, and the $$$ to have painted it like this in the first place, turn in the paperwork and get it fixed, or just pay out of pocket, what the big deal, it not like its a Hemi SS, or even a original 340 s. BTW i Love my car and it has a crappy paint job, still would get as much attention at a show as you sparkly paint.

Just wondering how the scratch happened momoparman.

Sorry, I know now...........just finished reading it.

You have a nice car no question. After reading your other threads I do believe you are bragging or you would not mention the cost, or assume others can't afford that level of paint. Did you do all of the restoration yourself?

I love some of these responses....I bet a dull ugly paint color would get comments all day.....probably not good though. That's
OK, ugly cars need love to...look at my rat.

Someone else coined the 100-point car (I don't know what that is or where to go to get judged like that) so read the thread more carefully.

I do drive it....500 miles already in 3 months....remember I have other rides and split time.

A few of you know what the hell your talking about and have some good input.

The rest must drink all day.

Thanks though for the all input, the good the bad and the misguided....it's good for a laugh.

I am taking the good points that some of you made and bringing it to there attention.

I will let you know what they say once they are cornered.

Actually, I could afford it, and I love my car (most of the time) but still wouldn't do it. Too much buyers remorse for me. I feel guilty spending what I do on it, to a certain extent. But not bad enough to stop, mind you, just a little guilty. $6,000 on a paint job I would never spend, much less $5800 for a touch up. But, to each his own!

Inevitably, it will happen again.

No...do you read...I did a lot of the resto and mods and most of the assembly but save the paint and bodywork for the pros...and I make no assumptions other than some have $$ to blow and some don't. That's a fact jack.

Cost is not for the original paint but for the repair.....I have never mentioned what I have in this car so put down the blunt and re-read if you wish.

Why does there always have to be some cornshucker chiming in?

That's what is ruining this site....stay out if you want to hate losers.

Sad thing is that this damage occurred in my basement....a friggin door closed on it as I was pulling it in:angry7:

Duh-Oh

My brother got done with my dads truck on a Sunday, he picked it up on Monday. Tuesday he is trying to get it out of the gate to bing it to me so I can get it to run. It would not idle. He is trying to keep it running while pulling it out and gets it slightly cocked. Clips the drivers side front bumper on the house and catches the gate post inn the middle of the passengers door and puts a 3" scratch direct center. I don't know who was more upset Dad or my brother. Bite the bullet, get it fixed and go on with you life. You can't worry about every little thing that can happen. You trailer it and a piece of debris off the road kicks up and lands in the middle of the hood. Crap happens.

That sign caused me to have an epiphany. Was Phillips 66 named after route 66?

As i read this it does make me laugh. $5800 for a touch up would be way to high but a touch up, re-clear the entire car, cut and buff. I don think its to out of line. Cost of materials is not what is bad on this one its the hours that its gonna take to do. Hell I spent 3-4 hours on buffing and re buffing and wet sanding and rebuffing and trying to blend tape lines. So you figure roughly $100 an hour for a good shop to do finish work and the cost skyrockets really fast. If your gonna do it just make sure that they save a little paint for the next time.

Hey Mop,

Nice Car Dude but you don't have to be so arrogant. Most people on here seem to be middle class hard working folks just trying to enjoy their hobby while they are paying morgages, tuition etc. That being said they're trying to find an economical way out for you!

Fix the damn thing any way you want to, drive it or trailer it, what ever suits you but please don't cop an attitude with guys that are legitimately tying to give you the best advice that they can.

Good luck with your build.

Brad Austin - aka. BigSlim

You obviously have the money to fix it, with or without insurance. So why even bother posting how much it costs for a simple touch up?

Seems like something competing 12 year olds would do.

(LOOK AT MY NEW BIKE!!! it's so expensive!) lol..

Good luck getting it fixed.. hopefully the shop does it for a better price than a "measly" 6 grand. Still don't see how even re-clearing that car and the new cut and buff could cost that much. :dontknow:

Just fix it and enjoy your car shows.:headbang:

hey i havent had a drink yet! its not noon.... is it? but hey if thats what you have to do to make it right for you then go ahead. better you than me. i couldnt have a paintjob like that, it would drive me crazy. i will be doing my own paint when it comes to that time.

Put the claim in !!! , lots of nice cars on this site, first time i've seen a post so trivial, over a scratch non the less..

translation=My sideways bragging backfired so I will now call you all names and reveal who I really am.:munky2:

love the ''out and fu haters'' , how clever...=D>

What would have not been obvious bragging is a simple inquiry like 'how much should this cost to fix?' , then any paint guys here would then ask away in order to give you they're best advice/op.jmo

but hey.. I don't really care, I pass you types at every show I go to and pay no mind anyways.

touch up paint and scratch repair 100 dollars
Donation to Red Cross and Haiti 5700 dollars
Knowing you did the right thing Priceless
