1971 Dodge Demon Hemi install

So to continue the story this freaking steering column is giving us fits. It keeps doing this.......

thats right, the steering coupler shoes

kept coming out of the steering column shaft COUPLER! Every time we installed the column the coupler would come apart and the only thing we could think of was to remove the column and set it side by side with the column from the Demon. Don't you know the housing is exactly the same but the shaft is shorter by 1 inch! we tried adjusting the base to get more column but to no avail! So, I called HemiDenny and son of a ***** Denny tells me about the construction of the shaft. "Just hold the bottom of the shaft with vise grips and pull on the steering wheel until you get the length that you need! It worked, its in and I'm pissed it took HOURS to figure it out! I was so pissed that i didn't even take pictures! ............. The next time Don and I are in the garage we will finish the Duster.............

Ouch, I think I'll bookmark this one for my own. I'm anxious to see the Hemi in place :)

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to repaint the instrument "wood" color. how about prep for it to?

I would think the 'wood' color could be replicated with almost any brown or brownish color. The texture is another thing. Jim bought a finished bezel from a shop that restores them. Mr Gs out of Texas. I used them for my GTO dash. I sent mine to them & they stripped/rechromed/painted it for about $350 IIRC. Then the wood insert was another $75-$80.

As they say, you gotta pay to play. It's ridiculous that some of this stuff is as pricey as it is, though.

Yes,price gouging is standard stuff in the restoration bizz. I do as much as I can myself and can usually get good deals from my manager bud at the local parts store. Markup on auto parts is insane and usually better than 1000%.

We really have no clue about that. I used to work behind the counter for the same company my buddy works for and I can tell you true about markup. I saw the true purchase cost every time I made a sale.

Just a quick update............. Denny and Weeb came in from Ohio to turn a few wrenches on the Demon. It started out pretty good with the removal of the old fuel line and installation of the new one, a battery relocation to the trunk was finished and looks "dandy". We wanted to install new rear springs with a relocation kit (3/4 offset) and ran in to a little trouble with the rear end. Not because of anything we did but because the rear end was shortened 6 inch's to much! Jim stopped by and was nun to happy with the supplier of the rear but was told it would be taken care of ASAP. A word of caution.....never buy parts for your street car from a drag racer because everything they want to do is done with a double throw down race mentality! Its a street car dummy and this is what I want!!!!!! ( rant over ) We did do a lot of prep for when the Hemi comes. Took care of a few wiring issues and called it a day. In the next few weeks the rear end will be delivered. The Hemi is ready and will be delivered along with the front suspension, trans and all other components to get the Butterscotch Demon rolling!!!!!!!!!!

I understand that there were all kinds of problems with that first rearend and that HemiDenny has been dispatched to procure one of those new Dana 60 clones to be delivered ASAP.

Well the Demon's sabbatical will be ending this week coming.

HemiMark might have a few pics of the final work that was professionally completed by him and his crew.

Hope to keep all updated with pics from the next step.

The Demon is now at HemiDenny's and the work will progress. Here is the motor and tranny ready to go in....."from the bottom"

I've seen that the valvecovers need to come off to get a Hemi in a B body from the bottom , think they clear in an A ???

Denny sent me some trial fit pics......Jim says get 'em on there.......

Under all that orange paint is nothing but aluminum. Valve covers TBA.
