He was fine all week and last night when I got home from work he was slinking around and whining. He won't even look at me, and won't eat except from my hand and then not very much. I haven't seen him drink any water either. He seems to be walking oddly too. Last night he was whining enough to wake me up.

We just let another guy go at work so I've been working 11-12 hour days, but find time to run home mid-day to let them out. Merlin was fine yesterday at noon but when I got home at 8 is when this all started. I can't see any external injuries as of yet....

These next two days at work are going to long days too. I hope he didn't have a stroke. Maxi's fine and is perfectly normal.
BTW, Merlin was just at the vet a couple weeks ago and all tests including blood tests showed that he was fine.

I would take him to the Vet, that just my thoughts though. If He's not eating or drinking and acting weird that's not a good sign.

Prayers said for Merlin that the vet finds out the cause ASAP and gets him back to normal.

First thing I would do is in his mouth and look at his teeth.
Hopefully he has not swallowed something that is hurting his belly....
How old is Merlin now, I sure hate this for Merlin and you nothing can hurt as bad as watching a friend hurt brother.. We know he needs to drink, Pain in his mouth ot throat or a damaged tooth will send an animal in a daze of pain... Prayers for my friend Merlin and you.. Will he let you give him a belly rub ? watch our friend close Joe

Good News, Mr. Merle is fine! He must've just had a bad upset stomach. Last night he even woke me up with a horrible whine I've never heard him make. He seemed a little better this morning but still wouldn't eat. I was able to work from home starting at around 1:30 this afternoon and when I got home, he seemed better yet, but Maxi did something very odd.... I let them out and Maxi did her usual deal and stopped me before I reached the gate for some attention. I reached down to pet her muzzle and she let out a God awful yelp right when I touched her and she ran inside and wouldn't come out. Freaked me right out. She was fine about an hour later, WTF? I swear these dogs were trippin'.

Couple hours after that they chowed down and had some water. Their noses are cold and wet which is good. I have no idea what the hell happened to these guys and I checked everything to make sure they didn't get into any chemicals or cleaning supplies. I'm at a loss, but they seem to be fine so that's what counts. Scared the hell out of me though....

Check your yard for any kind of poisons. One of the guys that you fired may be trying to get even. Hopefully not, but it doesn't hurt to check to make sure there is nothing in your yard.

Glad to hear he is feeling better.

He'd have gone if he wasn't OK by today.

Thanks for the prayers goldfish, it worked!

Teeth are OK, I tried to roll him over last night and that was a no-go. I thought maybe Maxi bit him on the pecker (she's a ***** like that) but I saw no blood anywhere.

I walked the yard and saw nothing out of the ordinary... Of course they may have ate whatever it was, leaving no trace. No way would Rick have done that to me. He's got a GSD himself and I stopped by his place on Saturday off the clock to bring him his personal stuff and a bag of biscuits for his pooch.

knock on wood they will be fine... maybe they got into a bees nest and got stung a few time. my chow chows did it all the time.

Here in AZ we're "blessed" with a poisonous toad frog- when a dog licks them they act just like your description of Merlin. Don't know if the frogs are in your area-just a thought. Glad to hear the poop shooters are doing better!

Any neighbors not like them? Im assuming hes the dog in your picture and if a neighbor was to have kicked him or something that might explain the no go on a rollover and they might have hit the other dog and its muzzle was still sensitive. It sounds crazy but that might be a possible reason for his pain and whinning plus no food or drink. If he still isnt eating or drinking give him gatorade. Thats what we do when our animals get parvo and have to get some electrolytes back in their system. Its like pediasure for your kids except for dogs lol

Thank you!! :happy1:
I am so glad to see this post  I think I will enjoy a frosted mug :eek:ccasion:
Anything from a Grub/new born baby insect/mole getting played with to eat could have made him sick also this time of year........ even a new plant
Thank you for the great update. Wow she would not let you touch her face :tongue9::tongue9: and ran back to the house, I bet that did freak you out :shaking2:

Great news that Merlin is feeling better.....what a relief I bet!!

My little guy was sicker than a dog LOL a couple of weeks back. I'm sure it was some crap he ate. Of course, it was the weekend and the Vet was closed. He was so sick, he was wobbling.....couldn't keep anything down and also didn't want any water.

Thankfully, the next morning he was quite a bit better :D or we'd have been off to the ER with him.

Instead of feeding him his regular kibbles, I started him back eating with plain white rice and chicken broth. I keep both of those on hand for the pups. Supposedly good if their stomach is upset. The chicken broth brings their sodium level back up a little faster than plain water.

No bees nest thatI know of, but Maxi does like catching hornets... I can tell by the swollen lip she gets, lol. Half a benadryl and she's good to go.

Thanks Big Jim! Could be...all kinds of critters out here.

Zero issues with the neighbors and they all have dogs too, big and little. They are only out when I'm home so if that were to happen, I'd know and they'd have to be in the 6' gated yard. Outside of that fence, I'm there with them.

Great idea on the Gatorade! I'll stash that away for future reference.

Thanks Mike! I'm having a cold one in celebration too! Yeah, I think they just got into something bad, plant or animal. They are both up to date on their rabies/distemper/listeria shots, so I knew that wasn't it. Weird on the face thing huh? That totally threw me.

sounds like they got shocked.

Good call Pete, I worked crazy hours this week and Merlin WILL pee on the walls when I'm gone a long time. Not his fault, I just keep an eye out and clean it up when I find it.

It's very possible that he peed on an outlet and Maxi stuck her nose on it, sniffing around. Well, maybe that'll break that habit, lol.

Damn I was scared C. Why is it they almost always do this stuff after vet hours?

Sorry to hear about your little guy but glad to hear he's better!

You are amazing 6pakC  and glad your little guy is back up and running  A perfect diet for a bad time :thumleft:

Glad to hear it was only short term Joe.. I'd be checking his droppings to see if there's anything in there that he ate. It's amazing what they think is edible sometimes..

Ram, check with your neighbors and see if any of their dogs have had the same symptoms in the past.

Maybe they can shed some light on local critters who might be leaving their spray in your yard while your two are in the house.

I'm on pick up duty tomorow, I'll see what I find....

I did see a black/grey fox just few days ago running down the street....

I'd also check to see if the manufacturer of the dog food you use has any recalls. There have been several recalls in the last year due to contamination and possible exposure to salmonella.

I just wish my ol' girl Lexi would feel better. She's a beagle/rott mix around 12 years old, overweight, dry nose and her arthritis has been so bad the last 2 weeks that she can hardly walk. I have been giving her 2 ibuprofen a day and it seems to help her a bit.

For arthritis, check with your vet. My older dalmatian had arthritis and very stiff legs. My vet put him on Rimidyl (or Rymidyl) to help with the pain. Then the lady from Dalmatian Rescue also suggested Cosequin. I then checked with my vet and he said that we could use BOTH TOGETHER. The combination of both together acts like a Vicatin does to humans for the dogs. He was getting around a little better for a while. My ex has her 16 y.o. black lab/irish wolfhound mix on it now and it is helping her also. Anyhow the Rimidyl and Cosequin acts on the dogs like Vicatin does to humans and helps dampen the pain for them. They sometimes feel like they are young again and try to run/jump like when they are younger and they try to run/jump like they were younger.

I'm thinking about getting her some magnesium condroitin (same thing as osteo bi-flex). I work for a company that makes generic OTC medicines and can get it for near free. It should help, but she's just getting old and nearing her time.
