Did you just install it on your hood or did you cut holes to let the air go down into the engine compartment ?

How did you protect against debris and water ?

Thanks

A snorkel?

I belive he is referring to the 72 style dual snorkel scoop, and mine has a hole in the hood for functionality, but being I have yet to drive it, I am not sure how you would protect it, but Im sure it wouldnt be a big issue. (pics are not mine.)

THe factory used grommets, same holes and locations as the dual-scoop hoods. By the time water gets from the entrance to the holes, it's going to be on a surface (No longer airborne), and the grommets limit what can run in to the holes.

I've had no problems with a hole cut above the carb but would not drive in a heavy downpour.

I was unaware that this unit was called anything else :)

On my hood, none of the factory holes lined up but that wasn't my question..I shall try to be clearer.

I am not concerned about the holes for installation and rust but more so the large (maybe 5 inches round) that feeds into the engine compartment. I do remember that there is a factory grommet for a factory size hole but for the last time I looked, it was expensive. My air filter unit looks something like this..

I am concerned that water will be sucked in through the carb..

Or does the way the air flows over the bonnet that very little water (or bugs) gets pushed down the scoop ?

The other thing I noticed was that many of the attachment holes in the bonnet for the scoop lay on the bracing of the internal bracing of the bonnet. Do I take a small hole cutter and cut around the hole or do I just used the posts that the nuts will go on ?

Thanks
Ian.

William,

That was just what I was thinking...but not having a hole that feeds into the engine bay seems ricer to me..

Thanks

When I hear the term snorkle I think of 4x4's that get into deep water and mud.
On that note, I have also heard the term "Dual snorkle" used in reference to those dual scoops so it could go either way I guess.

I can tell you they are not the same locations as the dual scoop hoods ! I am currently trying to figure out where to make some holes in the hood on my scamp, dual snorkel scoop ..

Waco,

I cannot seem to make your link work :(

The way I did mine was to flip the scoop on it's back. I then placed a large piece of cardboard (from a box) on the bottom and pressed down.

i then drilled the first hole from the upside engine bonnet where the scoop should fit. I then flipped the engine bonnet over, placed a drill bit in the hole and placed the cardboard template over it. i placed a mark with a marker in each hole. I then placed a piece of tape over the mark and went through the earlier procedure with a marker..I measured a few holes..found that I was sitting straight..used a punch to give the drill bit a start and drilled the holes. Worked perfectly. It looks great on the hood.

Oldmanmopar,

I love it but doesn't that feed water into the carb on rainy days ? Where did you find the bottom piece ? It sure looks like the engine can breath better..

What ever it is called, it sure looks good :)

If you look in my build thread, there is some detailed pics of a scoop installation i did on my '74 Dart Sport if that helps.

Waco,

Very similar...actually, I used one of your pics as a starting off point. Thanks !

The link to the gaskets doesn't work...I tried searching on gaskets but they don't seem to be for sale anymore... or I am calling them by their wrong name..what are they called exactly ?

Thanks

I cut a triangle shape hole in the hood just inside of the supports. I made duct work that seals to the hood and fits over the air filter. I use that on the track, for the street I use an air cleaner cover. So rain doesn't go in the carb. It also let's heat out while sitting still.

Black is where factory gromets go. they have a lip that sits above the hood surface and keep most of the water out
Red are the spots where holes to mount the scoop go and the 2 holes that are circled with red and purple should be done first then measure the scoop for exact measurements to the other holes needed.
This is a 73-76 Dart Hood but 73-76 Duster Hoods are the same way

Dartswinger,

That is how mine turned out. The problems I have run into is the mounting studs are not long enough to go past the bracing..I think I need to cut out some the bracing to fit a nut on..

What are the factory grommets called so I can find them at a retailer ?

Thanks
ian.
