HEI in Mopar ECU casing

DionR got it right. Going to make a bracket which the module will be mounted on. The mopar ECU casing will be mounted over and cover the HEI module.

I think you should also drill several holes in the bracket to allow air flow thru the empty ECU box. Keep the holes from showing once assembled and none drilled under the HEI pad. Your doing a great job. Keep the pictures coming.

Keep in mind that those ECU's normally run in a 200+ degree distributor normally, so it won't need ventilation.
It will run WAY cooler than it is made to run just mounted to the flat plate with heatsink compound.
 
If you plan to run it hot, automotive wire is often rated to only 105ºC. Wire fron Radio Shack may only be rated at 50ºC, if they even label it.

I would not. Just cut a flat piece of aluminum, you'd have to measure, but 3/16 or 1/4" thick, etc, and countersink the holes for the module mount from the bottom, or drill and tap the aluminum from the top. Then mount the aluminum flat on the firewall which will give you "a little more" heat transfer.

A bent bracket out of thin steel will give you very little heat sink.
 
67Dart273 Your idea was my first but I like the appearence of the mounting bracket more so that's why I choosed that way. I'm not going to make the bracket in thin steel. I'm going to make it in aluminum. So I dont think the heat transfer would be a problem.
 
Hey all,

i´ll also make the change to the HEI module, did some testing today....impressive spark. Does it matter which way the trigger signal cables from the dizzy are connected to the module? It works either way....but i´m not an electrician, don´t want to damage sth. in the module. Both pins on the module show around 1.2 V if the dizzy is not connected.

Yes it does. Hook them up as per this diagram, and if any doubt, check "rotor phasing." Google it

Looking down on the module as shown, the top right connection goes to the exposed terminal on the the dist. connector as (my poor) drawing shows

Yeah, I've read a ton of bad things about them. Thought about switching, but not sure which route to take. This thread is definitely intriguing though.

Just curious, what type of ignition do you run, Joe?
 
I was running stock type ignition using a box from napa.

I gathered the stuff to put hei in but have been too lazy to install it.

I bought the designed2drive mount for the module because I though it was a cleaner install then others I have seen.

Didn't go with a msd type system because I wanted to keep it simple and easy to buy parts for when far away from home.
 
Trailbeast whats the hei8 coil? Is that something I need or just stay with what you sold me a year ago or so?

They just use a different name for it in different places, and some look a little different than others.
 
ok im so interested in doing this to mine....i have been running into so many problems with my dizzy and want to get rid of my points. so if i ordered this http://www.ebay.com/itm/330830750870 what else would i need to get. i have an ignition coil that is black with a chrome bracket. the bracket has msd on it but i dont know if it is just a sticker or an actual msd brand
