I have been thinking about my project duster that I recently pulled out of storage after a 15 year hibernation in a storage garage. The whole car needs a total resto but I was thinking of my future goals for this old friend and I am leaning towards painting it J5 Sublime.

In conversation, I told a friend of my color selection and he says that green is "overdone", and in a way I know what he means because locally it seems purple is overdone. At every show around here, you can expect to see at least three plum crazy purple cars.

What do you guys think of switching to high impact colors on a car that was not originally?

My 70 Duster was originally EF8 which I think lists as Ivy Green met.

Paint it whatever you like. Who cares what others think? My Duster is B5 over white - others may think it's overdone but it is my second favourite colour (Purple over white is #1) and I don't much care what others might think. I like it, it suits me so so what?
Whatever you like, that is what you should paint it - don't worry about what anyone else might think. Your car, your money - the only person you have to please is you. Unless you're married.

Steve

If it's what you like, go for it.....you're the one who is gonna drive it. :burnout:

If a person goes to a car show and sees 3 Mopars painted plum crazy or 3 cars painted sublime, each one tends to catch your eye. Those colors ARE high impact. At the same car show you could likely see 6 blue Chevelles or 5 red Mustangs and not necessarily feel that those colors were done too often. They don't stick out from the norm the way the Chrysler high impact colors do.

If you're building the car the way YOU want it then paint it the color YOU want. If you're building it to please others then try to choose a color you think will be more universally appealing. No one ever seems to knock a well done black car for example. There is a legitimate reason to ignore your own taste if you're going to try to 'flip' the car. Then you are really building it for someone else.

I had a lead on a factory 1970 pink Roadrunner a while back. - Definitely a high impact color. - Probably worth more if kept original. _ But if I'd have bought it I think I would have changed it to almost any other color. - Even if everyone else would have liked it. I hope that didn't offend anybody out there running Panther Pink. This car I had seen was Panther Pink with a white vinyl top and I just didn't care for it.

I have not seen any Mopar colors over done! Except brown which fortunately has not been over done. My dart sport is brown but changing to Plum Crazy.

GY3 is not overdone....

I was thinking the same thing

or

wait

How about

It is coming

PANTHER PINK with a white interior

There was a pink 340 duster around Indy back in the day and I always thought who would want that, then got to thinking how cool it really looked and you could make a cool pink car

Today you hardly ever see a PP Duster, so it definitely isn't over done

thanks for all the replies, I guess sometimes we don't listen to ourselves. I have always wanted a bright green duster.

In my dreams my car will look like this someday. :supz:

(internet picture, NOT my car, but this is what I want my car to look like)

At least I think that is J5 sublime, I cant see the difference between J5 sublime and J6 sassy grass yet

My wife wants a pp 72 Duster to match my car (mine will be painted back to original B5) and frankly if she decides for some reason she doesn't want one I'm building one anyway!! Fm3 is definitely NOT overdone!!

How about a really deep blue ????...in the shade, it looks black, but in full sun, it looks blue.

Wayyyyyyyyyyyy to many purple cars. Panther pink I think is the least done and would go that route. Sassy Grass would be next for me after pink.

I think the ef8 (dark green) looks good and is the original color to boot.
I think there's too many sublime cars out there, but that's me.....
Paint it sublime and you'll be happy that you did, if that's really what you want.
Just don't paint it red!

JMO, but lime green and plum crazy are the 2 most overdone colors of the Mopar spectrum! Personally, lime green is my least favorite color, and I especially don't like it on pre-1970 cars at all, but them again that's just me! The Duster in your post looks great in lime green, as I'm sure your car would also look...to you! And isnt that all that really matters?? Geof

"Overdone"....no such thing, it's personal taste. "Correct"....who cares? There isn't enough colors in the rainbow for everyone to be 100% different. No matter what you choose, odds are you would see another the same or very similar within a while. Seems to me though, the colors I see the least of are silver / grey and white. Maybe they are underdone!

Yes, some of the colors are way overdone. We all know which colors we are talking about and you are not being original or interesting when making that choice.

The cars that stand out today are the ones that are not green, purple or orange.

Color choice has always been easy for me. Every classic that I have had painted went the original color, whatever color that may have been.

Yes Limelight and Plum are over done. But in the last 10 years I owned a Road Runner that was each color.I liked the colors and they were easy to keep clean. The Plum Crazy attracted 5 times the attention of the limelight car.And females from the age of 3-99 loved the color!

Changing the color, to me, is no big deal... As long as it is period correct. Just my opinion as the OP was looking for opinions.

I used to like Sublime, but now I think it is the most overused Mopar color there is. Seems like whenever I see a Duster or Demon, it's sublime. Please consider another color. Any other color.......JMO

If you REALLY want different, how about lavender with orange polka dots and neon green interior? :D

I say go with what ya like. my 67 Power Wagon when repaited, will be a NEW coat of its factory color as its a turn key unit daily driver. (IF you can afford it that is!) BUT, see the pictures on my profile and that's what its going ot be when I get to doingi t as right now, I for a slightly older fish to fry. I inherited my Dads 39 Chevy coupe, as he passed away with this car unfinished.......SO, I'm going to walk in his foot steps and do as he mentioned to me to finish the car as he wanted...So my restore on the 67 is on hold till the 39 is done!

Being said that, my Dads favorite color was Red....his car, is blue. Why? he liked the color with the brass metal flake in it. and he added a red stripe down the body line. why? (NOT because his fav was red!) but because he got my Step-Mom a rose on their anniversary every year for the number they would have been married!

So, as I said, paint it what you like or fansy. if you got a Wife see her input. Don't bother if she's a girlfriend, As then if something happens you'll hate the color, (guess the same could be said for my Dads 39 BUT that's a stick on stripe!

When I read the title of this thread I instantly knew lime, sublime, green was gonna be the focal point. Not because I think its overdone, but because it seems to be the most controversial color. You like it, or you don't. I'm not sure what over done means. Do you mean that it has become so common that it is somehow less special, less exciting, no longer out of the ordinary or less eye catching? More along the lines of used and tired of seeing it? Or, do you mean overdone as in there are more sublime cars than red, purple, yellow, pink etc? It certainly isn't the later. The show I went to last week had a couple hundred Mopars and I guarantee, with the exception of pink, sublime was the least common paint color. Maybe it has become a trendy color? Really not sure you can even say that considering the relatively few numbers by comparison to other colors. The trendy sentiment comes and goes with time anyways. I am of the opinion that you should do what you want. However, be aware that it may be harder, take a bit longer, to sell in sublime or might bring a little less cash. Thats just the way it is. Its something that I gave a lot of thought to. Bottom line, what do you wanna see when you open the garage door?

I also lean to the fact that if it is an original sublime or plum crazy car, it will fetch around 20% more than any other car painted their original color, except maybe Panther Pink!!
