just to keep my mouth shut. Our area is, to me, sort of a high desert type of area.....we get damn near no rain during the summer months. Our soil is well drained, sandy and depending on where you are very rocky. Neighbor has a "newsletter" talking about him being a farmer, they have three or so acres, 5 or 6 pigs and just got a hundred chicks. They are thinking that they will be selling eggs to everyone out here, and breeding and "harvesting" the pigs, with the intention of selling the meat at some of the local farmers markets.....I asked him a while ago if he was aware that for a good 12-14 weeks a year that the local folks we get our eggs from have 0 egg production, apparently the chickens don't produce eggs during the heat of the summer, which for us is several weeks of low to mid 90's, with 0 rain, and for several weeks during the winter when the temps are in the single digit zone. He went on about how those folks have no clue what they are doing blah blah blah. Anyhow, he mentioned the other day in his "news letter" that he emails every one in his address book that he will be removing some of the ponderosa pines and replacing them with Weeping Willows. I responded with "I wish you luck in getting those water hog willows to thrive here." Was leaning on the fence talking with a neighbor earlier and the "farmer' stopped by. He asked me why I was such a douche....Could not help but laugh.....I asked him if he had any clue as to the fact that those trees are not native to our area, that they they require wet soil and a good amount of moisture to thrive. He got all fired up, looked like he was going to explode...I turned around to get back to spraying the weeds, and told him that he is a clueless cityit....which is what a few of the local folks call the city people that come out here and try to live...He blew up, calling me some things that are not fit to be repeated in public....I am still laughing about it.
Sorry for rambling, just needed to get this out of my head so I can go about my day and the wife is not here right now.....

What will really suck is if the trees do well. :)

If they do, tell him it's because the ground is fertilized with the last farmer that came over talking sh*t.

You mention 'cityit', great name for the next door neighbor condo owners; awhile back the building switch owners, the new ones they were all up in arms, claiming that the climbing clematis from our yard was strangling their blue spruce. Trying to be diplomatic, we said, you gotta do what you gotta do, go ahead, but it's not killing your tree.

Flip forward a few weeks, they had their gardeners cut the connection, leaving the dying vines up in the tree to attract nest builders and rot, good going jack asses!

I guess you can't fix stupid, and it's a virus that infects a large part of humanity, I guess you just gotta laugh.

cityits......... Good term and I know what your saying. Recently we put our home up for sale. We have a house, garage and small barn on 10.6 acres in a rural location about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh and with 400 feet of frontage on a small river.

The house has been on the market for about a week now and have had 2 or 3 showings every day since it was listed. We have been inundated with comments like "we love the house but the river scares me" . Another is "will we need a riding mower?" but the best was this:

There is a state owned game lands open to public hunting adjacent to our property. This is clearly mentioned in the advertisement. A realtor recently brought a couple from Pittsburgh who obviously never have been out of the hood. The question of the game lands and hunting came up and I explained that hunting is allowed and that I partake in the activity myself. As I was explaining this, the young woman's eyes grew large as saucers and asked in a terrified tone "do you actually hear gunshots" I answered yes but the difference is that gun shot are a common occurrence here but unlike where you come from, it's not necessary to duck for cover or hide under a bed when you hear them............

They left afer the showing and I don't think I will be seeing them for a follow up..........

Maybe i should plant a palm tree here and see what happens.......
Cityit is right.

If they do grow it is only going to be because they flood them. Our soil is so well drained that you go go out and pour a couple of quarts of water on the ground, where it is not packed from being driven on, come back 2 hours later and the ground will be dry....especially in a non-shaded area.

You are correct on both counts...

Sounds about right. There is an un-improved small parcel for sale on the other side of the road. Every time the realtor shows up with some one I have a neighbor that grabs a weapon and goes out and starts shooting. He has a range on his property....

Cityit is right.
Let us know how it works out...

Chickens still lay in the heat but stopn laying when they moult which can happen more than 1 time a year.I do agree however they will slow down in extreme hot and cold.

Had a neighbor that wanted to raise chickens. He bought a couple dozen fertilized eggs and was told that they were guaranteed to hatch. Well after four weeks and no hatchlings, he goes back and gets another couple dozen and apologies from the supplier, saying they almost never have even one fail to hatch let alone all of them. Anyway, another month goes bye and the guy returns to the supplier to say again that none of them hatched. The supplier again apologizes and asks him to describe his hatch method. Then the neighbor admits that he may be be planting them too deep or maybe too close together.:violent1::eek:ops:

I had an employee who moved here to the lake area from Kansas City. His wife heard their neighbor shooting a .22 at a coon that was getting into his chicken pen and called the cops for "shots fired". After several repeat calls and 2 hours later the deputy shows up and she unloads on him. It was all my employee could do to keep the deputy from hauling HER in. When everything settled down, the deputy instructed her to go meet the neighbor(80's widower) get his phone number and TALK to him if she thought something is wrong!

I hope that cityit's willows don't suck all the moisture from your weeds... ya won't have a crop this year.. Mine are growing pretty good, let me know if ya need any.. ha ha

good thing I live so far from town no one moves out here (very often)!
ya might explain to him different breeds will lay different ave number eggs per year. he's right about the moltin, but I have birds that might lay all summer ( 100 degree hgeat sometimes) or all winter, down to singles digits sometimes. yea, around here willows are native and ALWAYS grow where there is adequate moisture or besides ponds.
quite interesting, we have a mechanic at work that moved here from id, az etc, got him a 40 ac in the sticks near the Amish, he has been studying their electrical generating methods... called him a half Amish wanna be the other day!!???? they can run a over the road alt off 20 hp diesel engine and run a 220 stick welder!!!!!! they charge batteries and run lights etc off 112 volt....
