66 dart with 360 ...what manifolds or headers?

-
Some on here are showing pics of or talking about 67 or 68 A bodies. They are about 2" wider in the engine compartment than the 66. The OP asked about a 66. Just saying....Dennis

Sanderson now makes a shorty set to fit te Early A bodies. With or with out P/S There # is DD8

Anyone know where you can find the Sanderson headers? I looked on their web site and couldn't find them. Thanks. Dennis

I had 340's on my first 65 340 back in high school. manual steering and I think there was a very close spot on the driver side. I have magnums on my motor now but its not in the car yet. Saw a pic of a magnum logged 65 at a car show but no details on steering shaft where some one said there was an issue. looking at those tests makes me wonder why the fuss when choosing logs, they are all within about 2% of each other. BTW the early magnums had 1 1/8 outlets which would maybe nudge them ahead of the 340's in total flow potential, and both sides are identical. are they showing 2 varying tests per magnum side? kinda hard to determine from the posted link.

I repeat; my '64 Valiant had an "installed by ME" 1971 Demon 340 engine, and with the engine bolted down to the mounts, the manifolds were TRAPPED, solid, on BOTH sides so that the engine could not move... there was NO clearance. That car had never been wrecked, so I don't know why some of the manifolds fit and others (like mine) wouldn.t... It cost me a set of headers... :(

[I can sell you s set. We are a dealer for them. Give me a call tomorrow. 317 541-9590QUOTE=valiant1966;1970161825]Anyone know where you can find the Sanderson headers? I looked on their web site and couldn't find them. Thanks. Dennis[/QUOTE]

You became a dealer? That's one way to build your car cheaper! Lol! How's progress? I've been working on my hardtop motor swap and neglecting my real baby.

I had the original '71 manifolds (not the header-looking passenger-side manifold,) and it scraped the side of the inner-fender panel HARD (simultaneously with the driver's side,) as it was being lowered into the engine compartment. It was a tight fit, hitting on both sides.

I was going to live with that tight fit, hoping I could "relieve" some of the interference, so I drove it to a custom exhaust shop to try and get some head-pipes connected to mufflers.

After looking at it for 30 minutes, the exhaust guy came to me and said, "The passenger side can be made to work, but the driver's side will never be connected... too many things in the way" (it was a floor-shifted A-833 4-speed with a Hayes, 3,000-pound pressure plate.)

I drove it home and put a cheap set of Hedman headers on it.

True story...

Guess those '68 manifolds must be a bit narrower, but they sure don't LOOK narrower....

My father's '66 wagon has a 360 crate motor in it and he was able to fit the AAR 340 manifolds in the car. Barely but they fit. The passenger side was not bad but the driver's was really close to the shock tower and the exhaust was a trick to do as far as I remember. I'd probably do the under car headers if I did it again because of the value those aar manifolds bring sometimes.

Have been a dealer for them for 7 years, we are a dealer for over 500 differant manufactures. Progress on my car is slow at best. The shop is swamped with work and a waiting list of over 3 or 4 months j u st to get in the door right now. Still hoping to have it ready for next year.

For what it's worth, I called Sanderson and spoke with Francisco about the DD8 headers. They are NOT on the website but his web master has the pic. He sent me this pic and said the passenger side is nearly the same, driver side all new. The #3 pipe goes up and over the #5 & makes room for steering box. I forgot to ask about power steering. $345 for uncoated & $595 coated (I think those are right, I lost my notes.)

They are nice. Saw them in person few weeks back. Would rather have those than my Doug's. they WILL work with power steering.

Back to the top and doing some investigating to make sure these do fit a none power steering 66 Valiant.

<<driver side all new. The #3 pipe goes up and over the #5 & makes room for steering box.>>

anyone have a pic of the new version? based on the picture above (old design) i would say its doubtful they would fit the drivers side, but maybe the new version will work.

IMO, i would think they would also have to lower the outlet and bring it closer to the block to clear the steering shaft

I just dropped a 318 with 360 heads and the original 273 manifolds on it. I have a 71 swinger with a 360 and hooker headers, I don't think I will ever put a set of headers in another car. The 360 heads were not ported, but the manifolds were to open them up. Had it on a run stand and it ran great.

I will tell you, if you do the 360 heads and the 273 exhaust manifolds, fit up the y pipe prior to installation. The heads are bigger so you need to shave a little bit off the heads for the manifolds to sit flush and tight.

But, at some point those 273 manifolds are going to be the choke point and it won't matter what's on the intake side, the motor won't breathe! Have ya seen our member Treblig's manifolds? http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/member.php?u=32361

I've been thinking about a stroker for the 64ragtop, but concerned about exhaust restriction. Looks to me like the most free flowing manifolds available would be the Dakota ones, but I think some folks have had firewall clearance issues. Also wondering about Treblig's manifolds in mismatched pairs. How much difference is there from side to side flow capacities and does it make any difference. Did the factory folks ever concern themselves with side to side balance or was clearance the only concern.

When I bought the 64ragtop almost ten years ago, the P.O. had the "y" pipe and a single 2" exhaust with a nice quiet muffler. Couldn't really hear it at wide open throttle! Dual 2.25" pipes with flowmasters sure made it SOUND better, and it really FELT stronger, but how much actual performance gain did I get? Damned if I know!

273 manifolds are fine on a 318 but will choke the hell out of a 360.

So, any new news on these new Sanderson headers fitting a 66 Barracuda/Valiant 360/904 non power steering car ?

Not too much of a choice for you on a 1966 Dart.Do you have power steering?
Hooker headers are fenderwell headers.TTI and Dougs are long tubed under car headers.
I am in the process of making mandrel bent custom performance headers that will be out in December 2011.
Are you making headers for the 66 dart??
