So I thought a cowl air intake might be a good idea for the slant six to get some more air. I went to the hardware store and got a rubber pipe reduction coupler that goes from 3.5" ID to around 3" OD on the other side. I went to the auto parts store and got a 2.5-3.5" clamp, and a fairly cheap CAI accordion tube. I already had a plastic 3" air intake plate, but these are available at the auto parts store as well. I have an air cleaner with a round intake end that is around 3.5" diameter. The performance improvement is probably minor, but the air should be cooler and more available. It has a nice growl to it too, at least from the inside. This is probably not for everyone, as it can add some smells to the interior when you first start it up and when you shut it off.

There is a location right on the cowl, just above the seam, where there is a curve to it. This is where I set the 3" plate and used a pencil to mark the locations for the sheet metal screws, and traced the 3" inside diameter circle for cutting. I then used my dremel and a cutting wheel to cut the circle out, and drilled out some starter holes for the sheet metal screws. I cleaned up the cut after with a grinding wheel so it didn't have any sharp edges or burrs.

Then I took the opportunity to use some bent welding wire and a vacuum to clean out all the dirt from inside the cowl so no surprises were waiting for my air cleaner. I cut a square of some plastic mesh that I had around. I think it's for gardens or something. Anyhow, I put that behind the plate to catch any large debris before it goes down the tube. Of course the air filter would also catch it but I figured why not. Keep it in the cowl, and I can periodically remove the setup and vacuum it out.

I then screwed down the plate and the mesh, attached the end of the tube with the included rubber on it, and locked it down with the clamp. The other end I sort of screwed onto the rubber pipe reducer, and clamped it down with the reducers clamp, and then clamped down the end that goes onto the air cleaner. I think it looks pretty good, other than the grey 3" plate, which would look better in another color like black.









 
Not the puurtiest BUT damn it's a great idea especially for those of us with overheating carb fuel problems. Now I just have to figure out how to pack the cowl space with dry ice and I'll be set for the drag strip!!!!:burnout:

Even better would be the dual snorkel going to both sides!!!

I would think you can get fuel smell in the cockpit at least on shutdown, what about a backfire?

Or did you isolate the vent system?
 
no fuel smell running or when shut down. But usually run the A/C. The only change from when the picture of the dual snorkel was taken, is you could smell oil from breather when running hard, went with stock style breather with hose and end of hose just open under air cleaner. If attached to a tube on air cleaner was having issue with ram air pushing oil out of valve cover gasket. Can really hear the T/Q now!
 
Find an air cleaner off a carbed motor, 1978-84. They have an evaporative shutter in snorkle. Engine vacuum opens and closes it on shutdown to keep fumes in air cleaner and out of your fresh air ducts wjen stored.
 
what about sucking water into the carb if it rained?

I thought about that also but you'd just about have to be completely under water before the water droplets could flow/move uphill to get into the tube. I mean water flows downhill. I guess as a precaution you could stick a small slotted vent (louvered) so that air can still flow through but with the vertical slots slanting down (like an AC vent), then there would no way for water droplet to climb into the tube.I think it's a cool idea. My vents are blocked off so any smells wouldn't be an issue. Besides any vapors coming from the engine compartment would be hot and rise straight up through the cowl slots so I don't see an issue.
Going down the road you'll basically have RAM induction because the factory put the cowl slot where the highest pressure collects as you go down the road. That's why you get such good flow through when you open the vents in the car.

The ridges in the tubing would do a pretty good job of collecting most of the water, if it even made it into the tube. The plastic mesh would catch most drops I think. If it was a torrent of water enough to get into the tube in the first place, and then make it past the ridges, then up the tube, then it has to soak the air cleaner filter. Not really going to be a problem. I noticed a slight smell of exhaust in the cabin after shutdown, but it was quick and I don't care really. It's not for everyone though. Love the dual snorkels! If I had the parts to do it that way I certainly would have!

Nothing wrong with the green engine, and no need to blame a "PO" for the awesome paint you did. My slant used to be red, then purple, now electric blue. Totally digging the cowl intake. Wouldn't work for my application but I would've tried it before I changed to turbo. Too late now.

True. I would have preferred to get the car in its original state, rather than the engine painted green, and the exterior incorrectly primered, but I can't complain too much, since I do have it :) It won't be hard to repaint, since most of it is flaking off already anyhow.
