VF Valiant coupe resto in Aus

-
I too have noticed that the dart/valiant cars are similar but with different titles in Australia. Here is a question for you. There are parts still being made in Australia and not here and vice versa. Two questions. Could you check and possibly send a link to me for a dash speaker grille and a fuel tank for a 1962 plymouth valiant. I know a company Bluestarspares made the speaker grille but I see they are closed. Any. Info is appreciated. good luck on the project. You are saving yet another piece of history for the next generation.

heres a new one

After repeated assurances from the guy who sold me the car that it had no rust, I was a little disappointed to find some more, seems the more I look the more I see, even the dash needs lovin' hopefully this is the last of it, so now I need to do lower right quarter patch and trunk extension, I also cleaned up and painted the grill and headlight surrounds.

These hardtops were just bare body shells imported from the usa minus forward of the firewall. From the firewall rearward only. This is because we were to used the hemi six in these vehicles which is 2 inches longer than the slant six so we have unique front chassis rails from VF on to accommodate the longer engine and the right hand drive steering box which is in a bastard of a place right next to the oil filter on the V8s which requires a remote filter to be used on our cars. We still have the R/H offset to the driveline and engine making the exhaust very tight around the steering box. We also sold a Mexicana version that had extensions welded onto the sail panels behind the rear screen but alas these are a rare sight.

made my own trunk extension and saved myself $200+, will need some more gentle massaging but I believe it will work

Hard to see in the photo. Is the idler arm also attached to the frame rail?
I'd be interested in seeing what was used for the remote oiling adapter.
Also - how about the front brakes? Was those locally sourced? or Girling or Kelsey Hayes 4 pots?

Hi Mattax, yes the idler arm attached to the left frame rail, the oiling adapter is just 2 metal pipes from the block to a bracket that houses the oil filter on the back of the motor, near the distributer, front brakes if I remember correctly were locals, I think brand was Girlock and PBR.

Knocked up a front support on wheels with some scrap bits I had here so I can now strip the front end and still wheel it around.

Looking good mate. I had a well known brown VF coupe in the 90's that was in a few magazines etc. I wish I still had it...

awesome man, I too wish I still had my yellow vf coupe, had some sentimental value to me.............

I decided to strip the front end to replace the bushes, ball joints etc, the lower control arms will not be removed on this car as the bushes were only recently replaced (bonus for me), while I was at it, I thought it would be a good idea to clean up the inner fenders and front side of radiator support and give them a coat of paint, another job ticked off the list.

as you can see, it has rail sleeves on both sides! So I ran some more welds as the previous person that did it didn't do the best job, I think now it will be fine.

Most of us know the old story, you buy a car with the promise that it has a great body, no rust etc etc.......then you take the paint off............

Some pretty good repair work going on here mate, i've gone through the same process my self recently. Good luck with the rest of it.

Nice work there mate. Have you done body/paint work before and did you decide to have a crack and see how it turns out?

I ask as I have a 1969 VF Hardtop in Adelaide and am thinking of having a crack at mine as most paint shops around here want 10k and above to paint it.

Cheers Paul.

Thanks guys, I have played around with body work / paint before yes but nothing serious, these days there are many things on the market to help people like us to have a go, so if I were you I would definitely try it, theres no way id be able to afford to get it professionally done............

Have a crack mate, i did mine because i could not afford to pay that sort of money, it's not difficult, just hard work, but well worth the effort, and very satisfying.

Thanks guys, I have decided Ill have a go. I got a couple more quotes and they are up to 15k for a non show quality finish. Some even wanted another 2k to block out any crap that landed in the paint and polish it, I thought this was part of painting a car!

This is how she sits now.

I wont post anymore as its not my thread.

Thanks guys
