Urgent help needed! I have a 74 swinger with a 727 and a 318. I've been having problems starting the car. When I turn the key the starter makes a clicking noise instead of turning the engine over. But when I jump the two terminals on the starter relay it turns over perfectly. I did put a new mini starter, starter relay and neutral safety switch in but it still has this problem. This didn't start happening till I put in the new mini starter. I really need my ride running today so that I can get it to a show tonight. Any advice is greatly appreciated. :banghead:

start in neutral? you can temporarily run the ground off the starter relay to the body but it will start in any gear. it will get you going. you probably have to reset the seatbelt interlock located on the left side of the firewall

@73ABodEE It Does the same thing in neutral as well

ground the relay to the body with a jumper wire as shown above , make sure its wire on bare metal to the body. make sure it is in park when you start it. make sure your engine grounds are good and your battery cable connections are good. make sure all your wiring is tight to the relay and to the starter.

there is a red button on the back of the interlock that needs to be pushed in if it isn't already

Everything is nice and tight. All connections are you good. I pushed the red button and nothing changed. Would it be something with the NSS if I can jump it on the starter relay and it be perfectly fine but not when I turn the key?

one way to find out, jump the relay ground to the body. if it starts at the key, then the problem lies between the relay and the NSS. did it work fine before you replaced the NSS wiring? maybe a loose NSS connection

i would say the relay took a dump on you. do you have another one to try. put your old one back on and see if it does the same thing. that's what I would do.

Just tried jumping it and nothing happened. It started doing this before I put in the new switch. I posted a video on here. [ame]http://youtu.be/0ygCDzI0Nv0[/ame]

I just jumped it from the ground on the starter relay to bare metal and turned over just fine at the key.
I thought you already tried that , my bad
ok , to find out if the interlock is causing problems, unplug the three prong connector at the interlock thing, take a jumper wire and cross the 2 yellow/black tracer wire plugs and try it at the key but plug your ground back in at the starter relay. im guessing it will turn over. but it has to be in park of course

Yup it turned over alright. It wasn't as smooth as using the jump at the starter relay but it did turn over

you can bypass that interlock by connecting those yellow wires permanently , or you can get another interlock. it seems to be the problem. or you can just ground the starter relay to body , but like I say it will start in any gear.

I just jumped it from the ground on the starter relay to bare metal and turned over just fine at the key.

I just went through this yesterday! I am in the process of the MAD amp gauge modification as well as the headlight relay mod. While I was at it I decided that I would address the fact that sometimes my relay would chatter like yours. I purchased one from Advance Auto Parts and when they handed me the box, I noticed it was a Borg-Warner part and I felt good about that. But then when I looked at the part I read "MADE IN INDIA" ARRRRGH, well it will probably be alright, right? NOPE I installed the new relay, turned the key and.......NOTHING! I investigated further and found a few connections and crimp connectors that were bad but I still got no response when trying to start with the key (cranked just like yours when shorting with a screwdriver). After connecting the neutral safety and the start wire from the igniton switch to the old relay I heard the relay click when I turned the key. I re-installed the old relay and now everything is fine. Long story short......DON'T TRUST ANYTHING MADE OVERSEAS!

Put the key in the ignition and turn it. Don't crank it just leave it facing that way. Be parked and shift to Drive and automatically to Park again. Then crank it. IF that doesn't work try it again but this time to go Neutral and back. You have to Shift all the way Fast. I had that problem too just a ticking sound and wouldn't crank either so my friend came BY and put the key in and dropped it in Neutral and Back to Park. Then started right up, wasn't even 5 seconds. It was the neutral line or something. You Should try it..

Well, idk what happened but I jumped the interlock and it turned over, I then decided to put the connection back on the interlock and now everything works like a dream. Idk what happened but I'm not gonna mess with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Do you have a voltmeter? A few checks can identify a problem. How? By measuring voltage. The starter relay coil needs voltage, measure that. It should be close to battery voltage. If not, it is not getting voltage from ignition switch, or ground via NSS, or other connection issue. A good ground is tested by measuring near zero volts, from what should be ground to battery (-) terminal.
