This winters project is to replace the flowmasters on my car (70, 340 4 speed, stock manifolds, x pipe, 2.25 exhaust dia.).. The sound coming out of the tailpipes is awesome but while standing next to the car at idle I can hear the tin can pinging which drives me nuts. After 5 hours online (the rose bowl was boring) reading numerous posts listening to lots of exhausts on youtube I've narrowed it down to dynomax ultraflow or hooker aerochamber.. I was interested in the dynomax VT but read to to many issues about rattle... I found this thread while searching and thought that I'd share.. I wish i would have found this hours ago. http://www.midatlanticperformance.net/performance_forum/index.php?topic=321.0;wap2

Dynomax ultra Flo welded, those are what I went with on my 70 340/4spd swinger. . Absolutely love the sound !

A lot of that data is from our testing. Glad it is still being quoted!
I can tell you if it were mine, Dynomax VT is what I'd install. We still have them on our 360-408 68 Cuda and there is no rattle and especially no drone. A very fine muffler.

Great information. Suggestions for a 273 Commando with the resonator. All stock. Getting ready to purchase.

Mine is also using the hypo single exhaust system. Any thoughts are welcome. If anyone has the size I am going to need, that would be awesome. The pipes are in the box and the resonator has been ordered. Thanks

Flowmaster 40 series.

Well he did say he was replacing the Flowmasters. Why suggest another one?

As for me, I too can't stand the tinny sound of Flowmasters. Any of them, 40, super 44, 50 series. Tried them all and got tired of them as they droned bad.

I too have an X pipe 2.5 inch dual. I'm using Magnaflow's straight thru style, these were the only straight thru's the muffler shop had. I like it but I will eventually replace it with either the Dynomax Ultra-flo's or even the Hooker Maxflows.

I did get a chance to hear someones Satellite with a hopped up 360 and Hooker Aerochambers, it sounded good but it is a bit on the mellow side.

Perhaps we could start a "muffler of the month club".. Devise a common size and a method of attachment, with perhaps sliding band clamps so that you can swap mufflers in about 15 minutes. Get 6 sets of mufflers in the rotation and rotated every 30/60 days.. That way instead of piling up 3-4 sets of mufflers in the corner of the garage everyone could see/test what they might like.. That way you can change the sound of your car without piling up mountains of old mufflers at $200+ per set.

I am running the 40 series Delta's FM's - much calmer than their norm 2 chamber- but yeah if he ain't feeling the FM's definitely try another...God knows there are enough of them (mufflers) out there to pick from. Check out you tube for what folks have posted.

Here is my 340 with the Delta's [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5TWSrH6KMg"]1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 340 CI 4speed GG-1 Fastback... pure fun!!! - YouTube[/ame]

Pm sent, I may be interested in the flowmasters when you remove them.

Do they still make Spintechs? Heard they don't drone or ping and sound good. Those boom tubes are getting some attention here.

A friend of mine had Spintechs on a Chevy truck and it was unbearably loud. Droned like a sonofabitch.

But how is the sound. I am needing new mufflers in my moderately modified 69 340, and I want a good rumble coming from the back. It has 15 year old Dynomax Turbo Mufflers on it now. I got them for $20 each at Advance Auto.

VTs are moderately quiet at idle and get rumbly at WOT or under very hard load. They are almost the perfect combination for a car that is driven for fun and hot rodded now and then.

At one point, we had 12 or so sets of mufflers to swap on and off our cars for testing so we had a lot of fun and learned a lot. I think counting my VOE's, I have four sets still downstairs including my OEM Chryser ones, some very early Corvair true Turbo mufflers with the proper inlet and outlet configuration and body size, some early spring loaded ones, and some Dynomax HEMI-size mufflers. I like my VOE ones best because, like the VT's, they are very quiet at idle (when closed) and very loud, relatively speaking, when I open them.

And some early images of the ones we tested. You may see SpinTechs, Goerlich XLERATORS, Flowmasters, Dynomax, Aerochambers, Magnaflows, and some independents that are still around and some that have been bought and disappeared.

A friend has the Hooker Max Flow on his ls powered G8 GT and he was surprised at the lack of drone and noise until he gets on it.

Have you had any issue with the dreaded "drone"?

Go for performance.
Me personally, I like Magnaflows straight through design.

After comparing Pypes web site and Flowmaster, I do not see a Flowmaster product that has internal baffles like the Pypes. Could it be that they are now making their own mufflers? They also claim their material is 304SS and Flowmaster is 409SS. I really cant connect the dots to a Flowmaster product. I certainly hope they are not Series 40. I bought a Pypes system with the Race Pro and didn't want the tin can sound. I will be installing this week and will post a start up video. Anyone have any comments?
Thanks all,
