When is it too much power for the street?

-
All up to the person, owning the car.As an ex street racer, you see experience & intelligence, that blow es your mind.((9 & 10_second cars on the back roads, and hooking up the tires) Also seen idiots drop a turbo Supra drop two gears and hit the turbo, while looking at his posse. He rear ended the guy,who beat him seconds before. Moral ,of the story:If your gonna play, take time and learn ,all of the consequences...

I love these personal opinion threads. Many good points i see in the posts. Back when I was and the cars were popular, a friend had a 68 Hemi Roadrunner, a 4 speed car with too much power for the tires back in the day. If you hit the loud pedal, you had better be grabbing the gears pretty damn quick because the *** end wants to catch up with the front end real quick. Too much power!.............................just for the tires and traction. The old cars were a handful that way back then. The op's question is a loaded one and there is no correct answer. If you're out of control most of the time, you have too much power for your car and what you can control. It could be a 318 in a Swinger with traction issues. If you own a car with a hot engine and it's not fun to drive because all it wants to do is spin, you might have too much power (or you need to put on some Cal Tracks and tub the thing) But as soon as you get it to hook, you will need more power. What a vicious circle!

This is the most realistic post,I've seen so far...

Some cars are just track cars my car is set up for the track and has 12.5 w 30" tall MT drag radials with a spool and Cal tracks. On the street it will absolutely destroy the tires even from a 40 mph roll, but the track 1.46 60'. You just have to roll into it, it depends how you want to set it up.

Once ask a Suzuki dealer how many Hyabusa's he sold.

His answer was "Sold Eight Killed Five "

There is never to much power unless owned by and asshole

My son just bought a R6 Yamaha motor for the golf buggy
watched an awesome video of a guy with a 3xx horsepower Hayabusa getting smoked by a Lamborghini.
After they stop at a light, the passenger in the Lambo says "Is that bike leaking something? Oh, no, those are tears".

The op's question is a loaded one and there is no correct answer.
yep. like others said- not too much power, just not enough brains.

Too much is when you don't have the level of maturity/responsibility to keep it under control. If you keep it under control, there's no limit.

I have a 440 with about 575 hp and probly about 530-540 torque. I went completely through the suspension and added four wheel disc brakes before I even dropped the engine in. I also added a Strange nine inch axle with Detroit locker and 4.57 gears. The car is super fun to drive but it would be dangerous in the wrong hands for sure. Like others have pointed out its a lot like having a gun. As long as you know how, when and where to use it its fine. I never street race, and typically drive mellow on the road and in traffic. Once in a while I'll take it to an industrial park on a Sunday when the businesses are closed and do some nasty burnouts and I take it to the track two to four times a year and race it. Next engine I build for it will be a stroker with 650-700 hp.

What's too much power? Evidently, not 707 HP. Thing is, if the rest of the car isn't matched for the power, you have a big problem.

I think as long as the entire build is built to handle the power and you are a responsible driver, there's really no limit.

when the exhaust pressure blows the neighbors windows out and knocks all the pictures off the wall. I'm getting there, just a little more hp.

Here ya go!

To much power is when you leave your tranny or rearend at the stop light, but in reality thats still just to much for a given combo..

our new motor is runnig -12AN fuel line.. It will see the street..
I agree with the "To much is just enough" approach and the only time you can have to much fuel is when your on fire!

You mean like this? [ame="https://youtu.be/099douUPsOE"]https://youtu.be/099douUPsOE[/ame]

I warn you, turn your speakers down.

There's a guy local here who ran drag week last year, posted a 7.70, street legal. Dyoned a hair (as in 30hp under) 2000 horse at the tire.

Power like many things, is subjective.

I like having plenty.... You never know when a random Shelby, z06, or badass Camaro will pull up beside you with evil intent on their minds. Always cool to show 'em the tail lights of an old Mopar.....

I'm not about promoting street racing but your run of the mill Camaro's are coming through at 425 hp so that certainly isn't to much hp.

When you sacrifice reliability and drivability for hp that's when to much occurs in my book. But a lot of that has to do with things like having an OD, cam choice, cooling system, etc.

I think its all good, 400 hp to 1000 hp on the street. Mild to wild I like them all.
