The Byrd ,and psychedelic,.. rock thread. .

-
I grew up in the Chicago area and discovered rock & roll on the radio in the early 60s when I was about 10 years old, and never shut it off. WLS at first, then WCFL came on, both very powerful stations, their signal carried hundreds of miles.

The variety of music and how it evolved as the 60s went along was incredible. At first it was the tail end of doo-wap, then the girl groups and guy groups like the 4 seasons, all the surf and car songs out of Cali, then the British invasion, motown, the psychedelic stuff and on and on. And I got to hear and grow to love it all.

After the British invasion inspired millions of teenagers to pick up musical instruments, some of the garage bands that came from that were good enough to get a record deal and get airplay. There were maybe 10 bands from the Chicago area that made it on the radio, mostly locally but a couple had nationwide hits.

Anytime I hear the music from back then it brings up good memories and good feelings.

Got tired of Metallica ,Led Zep , and the Doors .. Hendrix ,overplayed in my mentality. Went to the Byrd 's greatest hits... Help me ,to sanity . Show me good '60's music :(
Today's music, couldn't blow up a children's balloon ,with creavitivity.
Help...

Ok.
We can go all over the place with this.
You list Metallica. But that is not 60s music.
If we can go into the early 70s lets mix some Metallica with Pink Floyd and what do we get?
HAWKWIND!
( Beware, not all Hawkwind is created equal)

Yes Hendrix is "overplayed". You are right.
I find Hendrix's music "uncoordinated"
(Johnny Winter was also at Woodstock but look who got the publicity.)
So let's go with the incomparable "Bridge Of Sighs" by Robbin Trower as an alternative to Hendrix.

Too bad the Allman Bros sucked all the energy from Capricorn Records.
One of the great injustices of life.
The first two or three Captain Beyond records never get old.
(Bobby Caldwell....speaking of Johnny Winter. How could it not be killer drums)

Even though Jack Black calls Led Zep "gods", IMO Led Zep tends to be "pretentious".
If we are going to "mine" the 60s, check out the early MOVE.

(And don't neglect the later MOVE and Roy Wood solo!!!!!!)

The B side of this single.

Well, could go on and on.
But does anyone besides me prefer the "Bob Welsh" Fleetwood Mac to the Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac?
Christine Mcvie voice is also better that Stevie Nicks as well.
(Too nasal)

Oh, almost forgot Hydra as an alternative to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Boogie!

pistha and I are on the same page. I watch all the old videos of 60's bands. Girls dancing in cages, what's not to like?
I was trying to post a song I barely remember but I can't think of the band the sang it.
The lyrics went; Baby, you're driving me crazy! Psycho!

The Sonics.

Sorry, kinda tipping into early 70s, but hey, it works....

Let's not forget the wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner. The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher. The competent drumwork of Don Brewer.
