So I’ve got a 1966 Formula S here at my shop hidden. A guy stopped in and wants to buy it. It’s a parts car and missing body sections I used for my car. Interior is trashed and drive train is all there. He wants me to “prove” it’s a genuine Formula S. So I show him the vin number, the hood support numbers, put it on the lift and he verified it’s a proper 273 4bbl engine and trans numbers match. But we cannot find the rear body numbers. Under the trunk lid gasket I guess. Before I tear this apart any further for cash- does any one know where I can find a 3rd set of numbers on the car?
I’m lost. I know of only the two I found.
The fender tag is there but the cert card is missing. SN: car is getting locked up now there is Interest in it.
Thanks,
Joe

There is no vin numbers stamped an 66's. There are also no " numbers matching" drivetrain for 66. That all didn't start until 68.

x3 what they said. no numbers stamped on pre 67 cars. You say you found hood support and engine/trans numbers? They should not be on a 66 either.

I believe the only matching item that shows it's a 66 engine is on the drivers side just below the head and 1966 273 should have the letter B. Mine starts out as B273 and I was told B is for 66 if there is someone out there with a 1965 there's should start out with a A273 not really sure on the 65 but this is the way it was explained to me.

Um guys, did you read what he typed?

Casting numbers, date codes & parts numbers all tell a story in the pre-VIN era.

That is about the best anyone can do. ;-)

Wow we need to make sure we don't mix up numbers matching and matching numbers.

I’m thinking if he wants a 1966 Barracuda Formula S he shouldn’t start with a parts car... he’ll end up with the most expensive ‘66 Barracuda around.

Otherwise you have an interesting question about how to really document an early Formula S.

You have done all you could do. This guy is fishing. Tell him to hit the bricks. If it's hidden I'd be wanted to know how the hell he found about it!

I agree with everything here, Joe. Mine is a ‘66 Formula S bought from the original family, documented with the original receipt. I’ve been inside, outside, underneath, and wrapped around mine for five years now. No other places other than the two you mentioned. Unless you’ve got a paper trail, it can’t be proved.

Fender tag will show 273 four barrel (32 under the AB) and Formula S option (might be 67 under the EF, but those numbers are not clear in the white book how it should be noted). This car has the 32 with a 3 under the C and a 9 under the D. The 3 is four speed and 9 is disc brakes. Can't really decipher what the 1 under the E is. 7 under the T is tach. 6 under the Y is black vinyl top. This is a '66 Barracuda that is NOT a formula S. Can't find the handling package, which this car did have. We never did find a broadcast sheet for this car in the car (found one for a different '66 didn't match either the SO or VIN). We also know the history of this car back to 1975. And history is a great thing IF you trust the teller...

You can match the fender tag to the VIN with a broadcast sheet or IBM card, which should still be available from Chrysler.

IIRC a 'C' is a 66 (3rd year of 273) as an A is a 64 and a B is a 65.

Nope. A is 65, B is 66, etc. This wasn't just on the 273. It was every engine put into any Chrysler car. PRior to that the letters were different. I don't remember how the '61 413 HP that I had was stamped.

Is V a 64 then? This is a late 63 casting of a '64 273. See the very light 'V'?

Probably V. Sounds about right. I seem to recall an R on the '61 motor and research at the time showed whatever it was was correct for '61, but I had that motor in the late 1980s and my memory isn't what it once was. A buddy of mine probably still has it in a building that is very difficult to get into in San Jose...
