i finally have my 5.9 magnum ready to install, i also have to install the flywheel, the bell housing, the z bar, the starter, and the headers. what would the process of installation be. i was thinking dropping the engine with the headers and then put the rest after but im not sure if i would be screwing up or not.
Thanks for the help in advance

Lay the headers on the inner fender. Tie them in place and as you get the engine in place move the headers too. Driver side is worse

what about the bellhousing, transmission, and z bar, these are doug headers going into a 73 duster btw

flywheel and bell first, probably. test the headers. they'll let you know what you have access to

i read in one of his posts he mentioned that spool mounts must be installed without the flywheel on so im trying to find it right now to double check. thanks for the help btw

My engine had to go in without the flywheel only because I have a Milodon road race oil pan. With a standard oil pan that’s not an issue.

If you have a standard oil pan the whole assembly- engine, bell housing and transmission can be installed from the top with a regular hoist and an engine tilt. That’s what I did with my 318/904.

The headers are tricky, you can kind of lay them on the inner fenders but that requires moving them around some as the engine goes past them. I just install them after the engine is in. The starter is easiest to install when the headers are in position but not yet bolted on. The Z-bar goes in last, again, installing it with the header in place but not fully bolted to the engine makes it a little easier.

i have a road race pan too so ill follow your method. Thank you for the help. i have found your posts as great help during the process.

I have the milodon pan and I don't have trouble getting everything in all at once. One thing you want to do is not have the oil filter on and not have the starter on. I tie my headers up to the shock towers by bungee cord or a piece of baling wire. Then again kind of lightly wiggle jiggle get them in place as the motor comes down. then just get a light bolt in each one not tightening them down to give you easy access to get the starter in the oil filter on. It just gives you a little more wiggle room... My-2...

^^^ also to add to that I usually take the distributor cap off and keep a close eye on the distributor so it doesn't hit the rear firewall. Sometimes I just put the distributor in afterwards as well...

Whoops, missed that. If you have a Milodon road race pan and the 73+ K with spool mounts the engine has to go straight down into the bay if you do it from the top. Not even the flywheel can be on the engine. The flywheel, bell, and transmission have to be installed from the bottom.

Your other option is to install everything from the bottom, if you mount the engine to the K frame you can install everything, headers included, from the bottom. If you don’t have a lift that usually means making some lifting arms and raising the front of the car with the hoist and then lowering it over the engine and K. US Cartool makes some tools for this. I made my own, so next time around I’ll be doing it that way.

You have the road race pan? And a spool mount K?

If I recall correctly you have a drag race pan, which is a whole different ball game. Milodon makes a bunch of different pans.

I have the 8-quart drag race pan which has to be worse than all of them...
My K frames out of a 68 barracuda..

Ha! Nope. The drag race pan is a piece of cake compared to the road race pan.

Like I said, with the road race pan the engine must be lowered completely vertical into the spool mounts. Not even the flywheel can be attached. I know, I’ve tried. Initial install info is here post #40

My "new" '74 Duster- or why I need a project like a hole in the head

Second part where I had to notch the engine mount is here, post #44
