Always liked the DC-3 aircraft

My Dad always talked about his ride from Gitmo to the naval yard at Bayonne, NJ after his release from the hospital after being injured during his reserve cruise on the USS Wisconsin. He said all on board were scared stiff that the C-47 variant he hitched a ride in would never make it....

Here's a few pix from the graveyard at Baxler Turbo Conversions in Oshkosh, WI.

My very first airplane ride was on a DC 3 back in the mid to late 50's. They took a bunch of us kids from the local YMCA up, we headed north to circle old Love Field in Dallas & then south over Galveston & back to Hobby airport in Houston. Back during that time frame, Dallas & Houston only had one airport each.

Believe it or not, I actually have some stick time in a C-47 (military version of DC-3). When I was in ROTC in College, our commander took some of us up for a ride, and let the us have a few minutes in the Co-Pilot's seat.

Back when I was a seasonal "feeder"driver for UPS (that's truck driver to most of us) I was on an overnight turn from Oshkosh to Chicago and back.

One morning about 4:30am I was really sleepy with 25 miles to go on the run when I got passed by a C-47 from the Cambodian Royal Air Force!

The fuselage was strapped to a Dodge diesel pulling a flatbed trailer followed by two wings on another hot shot and a third carrying the tail and two engines.

THAT woke me up!!!!

That's funny. One time while on Final approach into Ramstein Air Base in Germany, we got passed by a BMW. We were doing about 150 knots (165ish MPH) at about 750 feet AGL when a BMW on the Autobahn to the left passed us. He had to be doing 180.

They fly 3 of them out of Midway Regional just south of Dallas. They come over my house 2 or 3 times a week. Low and slow, great sound, you can't beat a piston engine sound in an airplane.

We had one fly over our facility at 0810 every morning and it came back at about 1100, it was the short hop to Catalina Island out of Long Beach, name of airline was "Catalina Flying Boats" and it only recently was retired and sold. I think it went to Africa once sold. I turned down a trip on one after I fixed their internet, regretted that for a while.

I see this one flying every once in awhile. It's based at a museum in Geneseo, NY. A D-Day veteran.

When I was at NAS Miramar I my job was maintaining GCA RADAR (precision approach.) We had to have it flight tested periodically, and at that time the FAA had a nice old DC3. I NEARLY got a ride in it for a flight test, but was bumped by a pal of mine--who pulled rank on me by nor more than a few months LOL

Speaking of Cats, used to be a Calalina fire fighter up in these parts. There must have been some dirty politics that did it in, because at the last of it's "career" the owner made a statement to the news which did not sound happy.

And hey. the SOUND. Old twin radials should NEVER be converted to turbos LOLOL

I totally Agree. It kind of reminds me of another "Engine Sound". I remember a time MANY years ago when I saw the Blue Angels perform when they used F-4 Phantoms. Believe me, when 4 F-4s blasted by, the ground literally shook.

Small world...I dealt with Basler Turbo Conversions when I worked with another company some years ago.

My dad flew in 1 at Mechum Field in Ft.Worth they had him Autograph it cause he said the last time he flew in one was to go to Nam

Now that's pretty cool right there.

Been waiting for the Covid $h*t to be over so l can visit the one here at the NC Transportation Mueum. I work right down the street from there.
I go and eat my lunch in the parking lot at least once a week.

BTW... I took those DC-3 pix across the street from Competition Products/Howards Cams buildings.

Be interesting to know how many DC-3/ C-47s are still flying around the world, radial or turbo.
