I see some Mark 74 Naval gun sights, but so far no Mark 79. I believe that's what it is. I would say range finder, but it appears not to have any range measurement markings. Does it have any when viewing through it? If not, it's probably a gun sight of some sort.

No range finding marking on the recticle. It is a standard cross hair type.

I I tryed Googling the number and didn't have any luck. It says telescope but it seems to be a fixed focus?

All the knobs and stuff still work. It is in amazingly good condition, considering I used to play with it a lot and how old it is.

MK79 3"/50 cal Navy ship gun sight. WW2 vintage.

I had to look it up. I'm an old sailor, but not that old. LOL

Will it mount to a optics rail?
Looks like I found the optic choice for my new AR build!

@999yards
Gonna have some reach now boy! Gonna need to order a choke set probably to take full advantage of this puppy....

:)

@RustyRatRod
PM me your address bud.

I'm confused though. What does 3"/50 mean in terms of the gun?

I looked up the gun and found the explanation....but get this....Daddy was aboard the USS Hilbert (DE742) Cannon Class Destroyer Escort from 41-46, from its commission to it's decommission. Looking at that class ship's armament, it shows that ship had 3 3"/50 guns, so that gun sight was the model that was used on the ship Daddy served on. How bout that? Ain't that cool?

That is very cool!
Evidently they shoot a 3" projectile.

Sometimes the world just works out for once and that makes me happy.

I couldn't think of a better outcome.

Just awsome.

At 2,700 FPS and 14,600 yards with a 43 degree elevation. Badass little gun. Oh and the shells weighed 24 pounds. lol
Well let's get a visual! Here's a double.

Glad you guys had fun with this, I had no idea, looking at the photos I have never so much as been within 15ft of any Naval gun or any other artillery piece

My home for 4 years, lol. It had one 5"/54, BTW. But a shitload of missiles.
Can ya'll imagine the 16" guns on a Battleship? Never had the opportunity to get close to one.

Wife & I went to Hawaii in 2003, and went to Pearl Harbor. Our tour guide on the USS Missouri was an old sailor that was stationed on it during WWII. He said that when the Mighty Mo fired a salvo from all nine 16" guns, off the side....the recoil would shove the ship sideways 8 or 10 feet!

Yeah. Like this. LOL

I wonder if your dads knew each other.....

I was aboard the USS North Carolina.
Yea! Big *** guns!

Quick question, does the sight have any numbers on the dials, and/or bubble levels.
If so, I can explain how it works, as well as what the colored filter are for.

Red was night, yellow was high contrast day, polarized was to reduce haze, clear was clear. 3/50 was a 3" bore and a 50 x bore (3) inch barrel length, so 12.5 feet long. Broadsides from 9 16's would move the ship but not 8-10 feet, more like 3 feet of roll. There would be a horn blown before the big guns fired a broadside so everyone could be prepared for the movement, ie. not against a wall. Single guns going off would just rumble the almost airtight ship under firing conditions. Someone told me they never do a true broadside but its a very short ripple of the 3 guns in the turret, or else the shock of all 3 at once would damage other stuff on the boat. I mean whenever are you going to need 9 shells all leaving at once? Can't confirm this but sort of makes sense when I heard it. We saw the Mo in Subic Bay in '88 when it pulled in
