Projects... I always tell my friends and relatives that some folks drink and smoke, some are addicted to fishing, some take big vacations. I have cars.
I didn’t buy any of my “projects” as short term projects or daily beaters. I bought them because they appealed to me or my family, knowing that the rebuilds could only come after kids were through with HS, college, etc. Family stuff first. Finally getting to work on them.
I finished my ‘53 Dodge truck several yrs ago ($100 in 1975 and drove the wheels off it for 20 yrs - $17K in the rebuild).
Working on a ‘67 B’cuda Formula S Vert now ($2,300 in 2000). Engine long gone, top and interior shot. Looked solid until it was blasted...Quarter panel patches required, sideswipes on both doors and quarters, patch rear floor pans, trunk extensions, front fenders, etc. Body guy about finished (perfectionist) about $30K. Rechroming and parts about $20k, still need interior, top, exhaust and tires. Yep, more $$ going in than it’s worth, but wife and daughter really like it and it’s a Vert.
Next up is my deceased FIL’s ‘54 Chevy wagon (solid body - bought it from MIL for $3,500). My wife and her siblings, and their kids all have emotional to attachments, so I will have to do the best I can and hope to keep it under $20K.
And I have a ‘70 B’cuda Vert ($1500 in 1992), a 74 Cuda $3,500 in 1997) and a ‘73 Cuda ($900 - no engine or trans, bought for parts in 1996) - and all have rust issues. The ‘70 and the ‘74 are 318 cars. Son wants the ‘70 first, wife wants the ‘74.
So, the least I have paid was a $100 and the most was $3,500. I don’t care if it’s an old Mope, or an A or an E. All that matters is it has to have emotional attachment or appeal to me and my family.
