What to tell the exhaust shop.

I really appreciate all of the great ideas from everyone in this forum. I learn something new every day about tuning a slant 6. I am not out to win a drag race, but I do want a car that can be fun to drive on the road. I like the fact that I chose the Aussie Hurricane intake because it can be modified to accept fuel injectors if I decide to do more with my car when I retire in 4 years 5 months time. I will be looking at other modifications later on. I am going to freshen up all of the drum brakes before I install the hurricane. I looked at my Rock Auto purchase history and discovered that I installed the Raysbestos Professional grade shoes with new drums in 2012. I also need to find the math formula to calculate my rearend ratio. The previous owner told me I had 3.55 gears. I do not see any reason why he would not tell me the truth, but I need to jack it up and spin the wheels and count the driveshaft revolutions, to be sure. Which Dynomax Super Turbo fits best on a 64 Dart GT?

One final question, should I wrap my headers? I am also trying to figure out what Dynomax muffler works well with early A body cars?

What came with my TTI 67 Barracuda 2.5" dual exhaust kit were a pair of Dynomax Super Turbos, part # 17733. That muffler's overall length is 18.5 inches, and it has an offset inlet, center outlet. You would of course need only one. There are other sources, but Summit Racing has that muffler for $55.99. Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers 17733

B bodies use a longer muffler.

One last thing (maybe): I don't know the capabilities of your muffler shop, but many, probably most, will not be able to bend a 2.5 inch tailpipe without kinking it. Since the exhaust has cooled considerably by the time it gets back to the tailpipe, a 2.25 inch pipe would add little, if any, restriction to the rest of the system. Alternatively, although I don't see it specifically listed, I'm pretty sure you could order a single 2.5 inch mandrel-bent tailpipe from TTI, since they offer a complete 2.5 inch slant six single exhaust system.

Dynomax is indicating that this is the turbo muffler for my car, are they wrong?

Thrush® Turbo Muffler - Offset / Offset - P/N: 17696

I assume you mean Thrush, not Dynomax. Haven't tried that one, so can't say for sure. I can say that I have one slant six A body, two small block A bodies, and two big block B bodies, and they ALL have offset inlet, center outlet mufflers.
I measured the current muffler and it is almost a perfect match at 14 inches long, 9 inches wide and 4 inches thick, so I think they are correct.

Summitt has it for $28.99, wow. Thrush Turbo Mufflers 17696

I believe Dynomax and Thrush is the same company, am I wrong?

Dynomax was Walker stuff, in Today's buy/acquire/absorb climate, I couldn't swear Who owns what/anything. I think Mahle has done that, Federal Mogul/Sealed Power/Perfect Circle/Mechadyne & God knows what else.........now Mahle/Mahle OE...............

Looking at Walker's web page, looks like Tenneco bought Walker in 1969, and then in 1993 Tenneco bought Performance Industries, whose brands included Cyclone and Blackjack headers and Thrush mufflers.

As far a wrapping the headers, that is up to you.I myself never did and this is just my thought... Slants are cold blooded and the intake manifold needs heat to atomize the fuel.Cold the fuel tends to puddle in the intake. When I was running the 4bbl intake/header combo it (The slant ) didn't like ambient temps below 75*. the engine need to be up to temp or it would stumble during acceleration.Again just my 2 cents
Are your headers coated ? It would be a shame to cover such pretty pipes !

So my plan to run 2 inch pipes for the wye does make sense when it comes to performance. I think I will go with my original plan. From everything I have read Slants perform best with a single exhaust. So, I think this is how I will hace it done 2 inches for the WYE then increase to 2.5 all the way to the back. I am considering a Flowmaster 40 muffler. What other mufflers should I take into consideration, Thrush, Cherry bomb, Walker? The car is for street use so I do not want to wake up the dead.
Pete Hagenbush, lead engineer on the Super Six, said he got excellent results with a 3-2-1 system. His interview on the subject is well documented at Allpar.
That is cylinders 1-2-3 joined together, 4-5-6 joined together, then both joined into a "Y", then into a larger single pipe to the rear. Like shown in post #11 above. Remember, there is only a single exhaust relief at the trans crossmember I always take weight into consideration when modding my car and something like dual 2-1/2" pipes on a slant just isn't needed. Dual pipes and dual mufflers are self defeating weight wise. And as the exhaust moves to the rear it is cooling, reducing in volume, so it requires less pipe diameter.
I like your original plan with a Dynomax Super Turbo. Good sound without sounding obnoxious like a Magnaflow Mustang or Corvette.

Kicking up an old thread, what great info this is! My first A body has arrived. A 63 Dart GT. I think I'm looking at original exhaust. I know that sounds unlikely but this car was built in LA and never left California till now. Looks to be 1.75 from original intake going to 1.5 on the end, but feels more like an inch. I've never seen pipe this small! I see no usual muffler, but I guess there is a small resonator prior to the step down in size. It's all rusty but still there.

What I've gathered from these posts is that if I take my Dynomax or any muffler to my local shop that can bend pipes they can put me a new exhaust system in. I'm assuming at much less cost than the few pre-bent systems I've seen online, like at accurateltd.com or Mancini. I've used the turbo thrush mufflers before, I have one on a 74 Charger, and like it. With the thrush I can step down to a 2.25 inlet and outlet. I've read bending 2.5 inch could be an issue, and I don't feel like I need 2.5 on this original slant six. No current plans to change the manifold or change the carb. If I wanted to go 2.25 to the muffler, and 2.25 or even 2 inch past the muffler, is the 2.5 dynomax to much? I feel like the 2.25 inch thrush turbo might be the best bet for those size pipes. Thrush # 17713. Any input is appreciated.

Those tailpipes are ridiculously small, & yes 1.5" OD pipe, & some replacements are 1.25" in the bends...lol! A 2.5" system isn't too much, if You need more low/low-mid range torque, use smaller frt "Y" pipes to keep velocity high & rarefaction delta up. If top-mid & high end is the priority, go bigger so backpressure doesn't dampen that same negative pulse....

I pulled this chart off the internet a while back. Offered for whatever anyone thinks it is worth:

Thanks for the feedback. I know basically nothing about exhaust, so to keep it simple, would the 2.5 inch dynomax work well for a set up that is 2.5 inch from the manifold and maybe that or 2.25 behind the muffler? Another concern with the 2.5 inch was the shop having to bend them. Not sure if anyone makes reasonable pre-bent pipes for the slant 6. Thanks again.

A 2.25 pipe would be easier than 2.5 for the average muffler shop to bend without kinking, especially behind the muffler and up over the rear axle. Matter of fact, I've had trouble getting even a 2.25 inch exhaust system made by a muffler shop for a slant six, even for the front section coming off the exhaust manifold. A really good muffler shop could do it without any problem, but you might have to shop around a bit to find one.

I went with 2.25 inch Accurate LTD for my slant six because I could put it in myself, and it fit perfectly. On sale, the cost wasn't so bad. Not sure what muffler shops charge these days as I haven't used one in several decades, but I think that anymore they aren't all that cheap either.

Thanks. I assume the size of pipe I decide on will dictate the muffler inlet and outlet sizes?
I've looked at that Accurate LTD system. Did you also upgrade the muffler? Do you remember the "sale price"? If I upgrade to the larger 2.25 inch pipe and muffler I'm seeing $670, plus $200 to ship. (crazy). After tax and other BS I'm probably looking at close to $1000 to get that system. I know I wouldn't pay near that for a shop to do it.

For me, total including muffler, gasket with bolts, clamps and hangers, including shipping ($98.00), was $417.20. That sale price was $80.00 off their regular price. That was for a 2.25 system with HP muffler.
That was 2011. I just looked at their web site. All I can say is :wtf:. Apparently they've gone up a lot since then. And $200 shipping? Especially considering you're a lot closer to them than I am, I guess shipping has gone way up too.

Might want to check with TTI. Their early A body 2.5 inch dual exhaust system is only $750 plus whatever shipping is. Can't pull up their 2.5 inch slant six single price now, but surely it's a lot less. ???

Yes I've talked to them. No discounts. About $880 shipped. So double what you paid. All I saw at TTI was dual pipe systems. I went to Hughes Engines, who sells TTI, and found a A body 63-66 exhaust system for $430. I'm going to shoot them an email and find out more about what this is. It's TTI, and I'm sure single pipe. Thanks!

They can't find people to drive the trucks

Thanks for the info. I talked to TTI and decided to go with their system. This is a 2.5 inch manifold back with muffler. Pretty sure they use the dynomax turbo. About $600 shipped and should bolt up pretty easy. Always had good fitment with anything from TTI, and much cheaper than the 2.25 inch Accurate LTD system. Part number TTI A25S6WM6366 at Hughes Engines if anyone needs something down the road. I couldn't find a single pipe slant six set up on the TTI site.
