is there a place to find out details of what type of transmission I have purchased and where it originally lived? I bought a 4 speed automatic from anther member and I have been trying to find out the exact type of transmission (I think it is a 42RH) and where it came from (year, vehicle and behind what motor), but I have yet to find a site or source that can decode the number on the pan rail pad which is:

PK4 505465 0295 7958

Thanks for any assistance!!!

Generally, start with basics. Is it 904 or 727 based? Google photos. Is it RH (hydraulic) or electronic (RE) Look for a multipin connector facing vertically up, behind the shifter lever. "About 8?" pins is electronic, 3 hydraulic. There should be numbers stamped on the pan rail, you should be able to search those

Also make sure you don't have a Jeep one, which normally has the starter on the passenger side.

904 based, 3 pin, the pan rail numbers are in post #1 - that is what I can't find a place to search. I know they would tell me the original application, but can't find a site that would tell me how to decode them. (I know it isn't a Jeep trans as it came from behind the 360 in another members Dart!)

Didn’t the other member have any info for you? Kim

I've compiled quite a bit of information on these transmissions generally, I'm just trying to decode the serial number so I know what year it was made and what engine it might have been behind. I'm having real trouble finding someone to do a heavy duty rebuild on this. I know it is possible and found a company - Oregon performance transmissions - that sells rebuild kits, including a heavy duty rebuild kit, but they are different for different years of 42RH trans, and they just sell parts. Everyone I talk to about doing the work wants to know what it is in and then when they understand it is going in a car that never had this transmission, they want nothing to do with it.

4505465 does not appear to be a Chrysler part number. Look at the transmission again and see if the 5th digit is really a 4. Let us know what you find.

I know a guy that can rebuilt it, You!

I did it, it ain't that hard, and I'd never been inside an automatic before. Plenty of info on this site on rebuilding a 904,(your 42rh is basically a 904 with and overdrive in the tailshaft). Also lots of guys here smarter than me that are willing to guide you through it if you need help.
