Hi Folks

I just put the diff. cover back on my Ram with RTV instead of a gasket. The tube says 24 hours before adding oil. What say you all? Thanks.

The tube says 24 hours. Who you gonna believe? Humidity, air temp variances affect cure time. Having especially a petroleum based liquid in contact with curing silicone will also affect the quality of the finished product.
 
Overnight setup works for me, before adding oil to engines and rear ends.

That rear diff cover will squish the RTV sealer down pretty thin. The thinner it is, the faster it will set.
 
Unless you can't wait I would give it as long as you can 24 48 72 hours.

Also did you apply it and allow it to partially set up before tightening.

The directions typically say to do that.
 
In the real world of "get'em in, get 'em up, get 'em off, get 'em out" we used to put oil in diff's IMEDIATELY after the cover went on.

I have always followed that same logic and have always had leaks down the road.

Year or so ago a timing cover replacement.let it sit over night. No leaks at all.
 
You can fill with oil after about 4 hrs. But leave for 24 hrs before driving because the hot oil builds up pressure & max film strength is then reqd.
 
- if the vent is not clogged up
- & if the vent can expel built up pressure faster than the heat build up that creates it.
That is why it is wise to wait 24 hrs to drive, to cover all bases...

I stopped using the stuff, except for intake manifold to head/block corners. I always use the gasket held in place with Hi-Tack or Super Weatherstrip adhesive. No wait time & no leaks.

This was what I was wondering. With what it cost me for the synthetic 75w140 and the friction additive, I don't want to take any chances. Apply RTV, finger tight, wait one hour, torque, oil in 24hrs. That's the plan.

EDIT: I'm glad I asked this....The D/S axle had the rubber part of the seal separated from the metal part. I damn near forgot to check the vent hose.......

At the dealership we use the mopar stuff specifically for gear lube applications. It is orange in colour and very sticky. Get it on your clothes, good luck getting it off. Apply to cover and install then immediately refill with fluid. NEVER had a problem with this stuff. Don’t forget the friction modifier if you have a sure grip.RJ

Good plan, and catch! If it’s as you say going to be RTV: Waiting till it’s fully cured is how Grandpa would do it. Rushing things and dumping in fluid ahead of time is for the impatient. Grandpa always did things the right way:lol:

It is also probably $25 bucks for a small tube.RJ

It would be helpful if you'd post the specifc product name, as when I go to the snotty dealer guy and say "orange stuff" he looks at me like I'm a senile old man
