I pulled what looked like a 318 la out of a running satalite. I pulled the heads today and found hollow push rods . Ummm thst not right. How can I tell if this is mag motor or la block with mag heads done properly .

Magnum block will have hydraulic a roller cam.

"Magnum block will have hydraulic a roller cam" and three bolt holes in the centre of the lifter valley for the spider to retain said roller lifters.. It may have a spot for the crank sensor cast into the rt rear upr edge of the block as well. Check the casting # of the head against possible magnum castings.

Yeah I don’t know what that is or how to tell unless removing it from the car . How to tell if my heads are magnum ? Cause I wanted to use them on another LA motor . This was spare motor I got . I don’t want to pull entire motor out of my car . I wanted to put hood heads from this motor as I k ow it ran and seemed to run pretty well last year

So many numbers on this head I can’t make sense of any of them or find a definitive list

Magnum heads have individual rockers and pedistools, LA heads have a rocker shaft. 65'

Well they have
Man, am I ever brain dead today for some reason. I knew that and never thought about it
wrpl they are la heads , they look good valves and pistons looks very clean , cylinder walls look amazing . What are these exrra holes for ?

Without pulling it apart:
1.) Count the valve cover bolts. Ten on a Magnum, 5 on an LA (each side).
2.) Look at the intake manifold bolts- do they point straight up (Magnum), or are they angled to match the manifold mating surface (LA).
3.) Does it have just the LA "ear" type motor mounts, or does it additionally have the 3 lug mid-block Magnum mounts?

Looks like shaft rockers from here. LA

#9 - I get air injection , but what was in the hole ? Or was it just open ? The manifold covers the holes almost compleatly in middle . And complete cover on the Ends

They're utilized by later exhaust manifolds that also have injection ports, which in turn are fed by the air pump. Emissions stuff. Since you're not using any of that, the ports get drilled, tapped and plugged flush with allen screws so early manifolds or headers can be used.

Perfect - is there away too see what year this block is from ? Clearly it’s not stock from 73 satellite

BE CAREFUL HERE. That is sloppy "recent" paint. Do you KNOW that the engine ran and oiled OK? ----Possibilities---

1..LA block, LA heads

2..LA block converted to use Mag heads WE KNOW NOT because you have shaft rockers

3..Mag block with LA heads---WILL NOT OIL the shaft rockers because mag blocks don't have the block oil passage

4..Very late "roller block" LA block with some sort of LA or original heads. these were built a few years, used factory TBI injection, used factory roller cams just like magnum, but had the block oil hole and used LA style shaft rockers. Look for the roller lifter "spider" retainers and block bolt holes down in the valley. That might explain the "both" motor mounts

Two discrepancies:
#3- Early Magnum blocks (until '94ish?) were still drilled for rocker oiling, although it was not utilized in the Magnum configuration. Later Magnums were not drilled.
#4- The LA roller blocks did not have the Magnum motor mount bosses.

OP appears to have an early Magnum block with LA heads, but we won't know for sure until he posts the block casting date...
