A lighter reciprocating weight isn't a bad thing but it isn't much of a power builder. May be a few hp at high rpm. "parasitic losses" don't amount to much. I have never seen it listed or estimated.
Power gained from light components is pretty small.
I want light components (pistons) for what it does for connecting rod strength, and block longevity. Less stress on everything is a worthy goal.

I think engine masters did something with rotating engine weight. I don't recall the results. I guess I wasn't impressed.

The 273/318 rods are already light. Sure, aftermarket rods are lighter yet. Replacement pistons are going to be lighter than the factory cast ones. Unless you are building a high output race engine, I wouldn't bother but that's just me.
 
Depends on your performance goals: Very easy to build a fairly low buck 318 A-Body that runs 13's all day long, been there and done that. Even easier if you have access to a 5.2 magnum which are a dime a dozen.
I've been a big block guy for 40 years. Only small block i've built recently was a 406.
I would certainly miss the torque with only a 318.

It's SO easy to save a bunch of reciprocating weight in a big block Mopar, I guess I assumed I'd try to do the same with a small block.
My current piston/pin combo for my maxwedge is 400 grams lighter than the p/p that came out.

Lot of reliable 318's out there making good power and nothing wrong with that.

Friend of mine is one of the founders of KRC Performance, one of the most impressive trucks he saw on the dyno was a 4x4 Dakota making 330-340 hp to the wheels... with a 3.9 V6.

I don’t think a rear wheel ton was available in the 70&80’s.
Does anybody know when a rear wheel dyno came out?

the chassis dyno was actually developed in the 1920's!

clayton was a manufacturer that made a ton of them and were popularized post WW2.

the shop i worked at had a dual roller clayton from the early 70's
 
If I want a small block mopar, and don't have one, I'll look for a 360, or 5.9, and pass on a 318.
If I HAVE a 318, and don't have a 360 (or 340), I'd 0robably put a stroker kit in the 318 and add good heads.

But frankly, a 318 is disregarded because there was never a high performance version. It's nine inches smaller than the fabled 327 Chevy that had LOTS of performance versions. A 318 built similar to a 340hp 327 should be almost as capable. (Smaller bore size of 318 is a factor)
Not here there was not, but in other countries, Mexico for instance, there were HP 318s.
 

I thought in the 80s there were 318 4 barrels with windage trays that came in US police cars?
I guess it depends on your definition or what a performance engines is.

Technically a 170/198 engine is enough to pull these cars around so anything more than that you could consider a performance upgrade :)

My friend owned KRCPerformance, they did some V6 work.

I do remember seeing them in the MP catalog too. (and I have all the old ones too as you can see)

As an aside; the Hemi package pretty much killed his business to some degree, they invested a lot of money in the 4.7 and magnum engines and it was just not profitable to stay open.

Back in the early 70's I worked at JC Pennys Auto Center while I was going to tech school. We had a chassis dyno that was used for tuning but it wasn't used much. It was a double roller if I remember. They finally took it out and installed a hoist in the stall.
