Perf. Tips Dart Drag Car

-
The scoop worked ,along with hotter plugs ,more fuel pressure,my homeade subframe connectors ,and sum carb tinkering.I just came home from the Hamb Drags and the Dart ran great.I had a previous best of 7.58 @ 91 mph in the 1/8 with a 1.67 60'. Are you ready for this ? How about a 7.39 @ 93 mph in the 1/8 and a 1.63 60' ? It was a 1/4 track ,but i still got my 1/8 mile figures on the slip.BTW ,i ran 11.71 @112.8 in the 1/4 .No traction helpers or pinion snubber ,or trick springs .Only a mild 10 to 1 408 with an Edelbrock cam , a powerglide and 4.10 gears on 8.5 slicks.I was lauching at 2500 on the ft brake .Thanks to all that helped me on it with tips and good advice.I was grining from ear to ear ,especially since i was running 2 seconds faster than alot of the pretty cars ,and alot of them laughed at it when i was unloading it...:bootysha:

look at you!!! congrats...looks like it was the frame connectors. If it improved the 60ft

Are they ported heads? Cam set up?

I'm thinkin you're needing more carb. What size jets are in there now, and what list model carb is it?

For comparison sake, on our '72 Duster bracket car, 360(0.030"+) 11:1 solid cam w2 econo heads..... We've played around with alot of carbs but it seems to like the 850holley the most... 750 had a little more response, 1050 slowed it down... but quickest et was with a 850.... but then again we turn 7300rpm so that's a big difference as well. Our dart with the 422 really like a 1050, at 5900rpm. I don't think the 60' times are what's killing you for that ET

Im thinking its the cam thats running out.Its just a Edelbrock performer rpm cam.The heads are stock Econo W2's (unported). Its a 750 speed demon carb (mech. secondaries). With 76 jets in the primaries.I havent looked at the secondaries yet.I was thinking of a jet change ,but i didnt want to change too many things at one time ,before i ran it.If it slowed up ,i wouldnt know for sure what caused it.Now that i know my other changes didnt hurt it ,i am ready to start messing with the jetting and such. The reason i think its the cam is because its not cutting or falling off ,its just leveling out and not pulling as hard once i get to 6000 rpm or right about 75 feet before the end of the 1/4.The plugs were fresh this time out ,and they look perfect after 2 runs.Nice light tan ,and appear to be the correct heat range by the heat mark on the hook of the plug.I think the cam is something like a 480 lift .What do you think would be a good hydraulic upgrade for my combo ? Its a 10 to 1 motor ,that i would like to keep under 6500 rpm if possible.Im not out to set a world record ,just have sum fun and go fast for a long time ,without breaking too much .Here is a partial vid of my 11.71 run that my wife took. She didnt start filming till i was even with the tree though ,so i didnt get to see my launch. The thing that sounds like a Harley once i go past her ,is my oponet in the other lane finally getting traction and trying to catch me with a 14.86 run .Heres the vid link ...

the heat range is on the threads of the plug...the hook is used for timing. 2-3 threads on the plug means good heat range....4-5-6 means too hot and none means too cold

wish I would have seen this post. Is that at MOKAN dragway? That is my home track 13 miles from my house. sorry I missed out. :(

Sorry ,your right about the thread thing and the heat range. The threads on the plug are about 1 1/2 or 2 down,so i guess im good. The mark on the hook is right on the 90 .I think this means the timing is good .Is it right on the elbow of the hook ? Its more to the top of the bend than the bottom ,but its on the bend ...

That was the one.It was way over attended .Over 230 cars and only got a couple of runs in cuz of it...

yup sounds good...I heard some other things like mess with the jets to max out your MPH in the 1/4 and add timing until your MPH goes down then lower it back until it goes back

I ditched the mechanical fuel pump and am just using the Holley Blue now.I also made a ghetto sealed scoop pan for the air horn on the Demon. It can draw nothing but outside air now .I hope this stuff helps my Dart in Missouri in a few weeks. Its a 1/4 mile track and maybe some pressurised cooler air will help me into 11.70's .The scoop is a bit shorter than i would think is ideal ,but it looks cool and fits the 60's theme on this dart .More changes are coming ,and thanks again for the good advise ...
you might have to rejet the carb now woth the pan on it

Save up your money, have the heads ported and pick out a good solid drag race cam.... watch the car drop 7/10ths just from that.... you're running pretty good for that cam actually

I think you are loosing time with the powerglide.
I'm running 9.50's and don't feel I have enough hp to optimize the change from a torqueflight to a powerglide.

As far as 60 ft times go.If you can loose a tenth off the 60 ft times that would net you 2 th's at the big end.

Got the battery moved to the trunk over the right rear as far back as i could get it and added a master cutoff .I also jetted the carb up a few #'s to start with . I am running it at a nostalgia event in Temple Texas in a few weeks and im hoping with the added weight transfer of the battery in the trunk and off the frontend ,plus the cooler October air i can dip into the 11.60's .I was only 2 hundreths away in August in hot weather with the 11.71 .I am gunna tear it down this winter and step up the cam and valve springs ,plus add a 6 point roll bar.I am wanting to get in the 10's.Stay tuned ...

nice Im going to try to take 100-300 pounds off my duster

Shocker NEVER remove the shrunken head from its current location or you will unleash a VOODOO curse worse than the one that michelle and barry have cast on our Country. !!! Trust Me I have seen the CARNAGE first hand!!!" BEWARE"

This is what happens when you DISTURB the VooDoo head!!!!Notice there's no rear view mirror....I removed it with my Forehead at about 100 mph!!!Let these pictures be a warning to anyone bout' ta remove a Shrunken Head from its resting spot.(What transpired in these photos ain't got nuttin' ta do wit' the Supercharger the 5 speed or the 4 Long Island Iced Teas I drank!!!!)

Thanks for all the kind words about my Dart guys. She really is a neat old dragcar ,to go and play around with .The Chevy guys are the majority at the Nostalgia (pre 65) drag events i go to ,and 99 % of them hate this old Dodge ,i guess because its running faster with less than their bowties are .Lots of cars that i see at these events look like they would they would tear up the pavement and then go out and run 12's-13's ,and alot of them are tubbed out. They either cant get it hooked or they are poppin and spitting down the track .This old Mopar of mine is hook'n what power it makes on the tiny 8.5 slicks and is wearing them out. I have always liked the underdog or different drag car ,and thats what attracted me to this Dart .Man dart4forte that dart of your could be mines sister. What drivetrain is in it ?

Good to seal the scoop to the carb, but you've got to have a big enough scoop to grab the air.
The general rule is a minimum of 30 square inches of scoop opening. Your scoop looks much smaller than that. Also, your scoop looks very low which means your pulling air only from the relatively still air right on the hood. You can still get the vintage look if you can find an old 'boundary layer' type scoop that will get the entire scoop area up off of the hood in order to get a little ram effect. Research some old drag photos from the late 60s-early 70s.

Well the Dart surprised everyone yesterday at the day Of The Drags in Temple Texas.Had a previous best from August of 11.71 @ 112 with a 7.39 in the 1/8.Are your ready ? How about a string of 11.50's all day and a best of 11.48 at 113.2 with a 7.27 @ 94 in the 1/8.My 60 foots are no better ,but moving the battery to the trunk made it stop breaking loose in the middle of the track ,and i jetted the carb up 2 #'s as well. The weather and air were perfect. Here are sum vids from yesterday. This one is of an 11.53 run .Its a little out of focus ,but i finally got to see what the Dart looks like from the rear on the launch...
