Making power out of the 318

Are 302 heads a true decent budget cylinder head for a 318? I'm between buying a set of 302's or a set of speedmaster cylinder heads.

    Cheap 318 performance mods.

For a nice cruiser I have to say id rather do the 302 heads over 360 heads and just clean up the nasty in the heads (light porting) as yeah I know, 360 heads on a 318 have been done forever but a 318 is a bit low on compression anyway, I certainly wouldn't want "less" which is what plopping 360...

    86 Black Roller 318, swap/interchange into 72 318

302 heads are NOT J heads. J heads are early 340/360 heads. I would not bother with 302 or OEM Magnum heads. IF the block was a Magnum / no oil through the head gallery, I’d go straight to the Edebrock Magnum heads. Otherwise, it would be a regular aluminum LA head. An ‘86 block is a roller LA...

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

66-67 273 heads are different, besides being closed chambers. https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/302-heads.306169/page-2#post-1970742043 See post #47.

    318 power!

302 is a great head. And with bigger valves can make serious power. Not sure why anybody is poo- pooing them, they have more potential than x or J heads. “Chrysler's small-block cylinder head design changed very little until 1987 when the 302 casting (last three digits of the casting number)...

    340 intake on 318

It's only a 2-8 cfm loss on untouched stock 302 heads compared to port matched to the 340 size.

Making power out of the 318

In my experience the 289 K motor was the best all around. I never had any experience with a Boss 302. I do have experience with 351 Cleveland 4 barrel heads, Wow!

Confirming 302 Head Exhaust Valve Rotator Removal Parts

...are aware of, I'm sure. My question: My 68 Barracuda 318 904 8-3/4 needed a new cylinder head so I'm replacing them both with a pair of 302 heads from a 1987 B250 van. The 302 heads have rotators on the exhaust valves and I'd like to replace them with standard retainers. However, the lock...

    Cheap 318 performance mods.

...pretty much any dual plane (even factory!) and a 600~650 carb along with headers and a good ignition curve will do wonders. if you have 302 heads and they require very little investment, then sure, why not. if you don't have 302 heads, there are better options. any of the "small valve" 360...

    86 Black Roller 318, swap/interchange into 72 318

    Better Torque From A 318

Plus equal work porting/valve/vj etc.. to 360/5.9 heads will give you probably at least 40 more cfm over 273/318 heads why give up 60+ hp, nevermind a set of aftermarket heads. No one is saying 302 can't work, they just don't make much sense in most cases. Imagine a basic zero decked 318-328...

360 head over a 318 because flow trumps compression every time and has been proven over and over again and again. To that end, ai’d walk right to an aluminum head over a cast iron 360 head.

    [SOLD] 302 heads

1985 318 "302" heads. HEADS ONLY !!! Still on the engine, and it ran great. I have not taken the heads off the engine to inspect them. Located a half hour from Dubuque. These are quickly becoming the preferred head for the small block mopar builder. Some prefer these over Edelbrock's...

302 heads-Is it worth putting them on a stock 318

A set of ported of 302 heads is fine for the power your looking for, but there’s way better heads to swap to, there a bunch of people that push these heads for whatever reason. But you got them and wouldn’t sweat it, you’ll make decent power.
  24. H

    One for the 318 lovers

Wait what.....They made more power with the shitty smaller port 302 heads than the 360 heads..... Go build it with 11 to 1 comp and a decent cam and see what it then makes.

The speedmasters are good but you need to have them gone tru by a shop and get new springs the stock ones like to break thats what my uncle said he has a 78 diplomat with a mag 360 makes 400 he is running stock heads but when he was looking into the speed masters that what he read

Gasket sets. Pre 1985 and later than 1985?

If you are running a roller cam you need to use #302 , #308 , #576 , magnum or trickflow heads . Any other head will require the pushrod tunnels to be enlarged.

    Cheap 318 performance mods.

I run early 318 heads with small valves 208/214 delta cam, and 9:1 in a w100 @ 4700 ft. 800 Rochester on a stock spread-bore. Save your money. Pulls from the bottom and hold 85on the freeway with ease 29” tire 3:55. 302 heads aren’t magic.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

He done at least 3 different 400 hp 318 builds basically 225-245 cams, 9.7-10.5:1 cr, airgap headers, one with magnum heads one with ported 302 heads with 2.02 and one with older EQ then ported them out for 425 hp and and one just added xe262h cam and 4bbl and headers on stock low cr 318 for 282 hp.
