    Swirl Port heads

Hmm. That's interesting! I guess my observation of the differences between the two are moot! This does make sense since my 302's were off a car, and my 714's were off a truck. So all else being equal, 302's and 714's are the exact same head!

    Swirl Port heads

302's and 714's are identical. I have both sets, cant find any difference between the two other than the 714's have heavier nail head exhaust valves, rotators on the exhaust valves, and the heads are factory machined for positive valve stem seals. They also "seem" to be heavier than the 302's...

    Serpentine System

Yes and no. Yes in that you can IF you use the magnum timing cover, water pump, balancer, AND a 1978-up intake manifold with the offset t-stat to clear the alternator/ac bracket. Also, keep in mind that you will have to run an electric fuel pump because there is no provision for a fuel pump in...

    difference in heads

714 heads ARE 302 heads. I have a set. The only difference i could see between them and 302s are that they have beefier, nail head exhaust valves, valve rotators on the exhaust, and are actually HEAVIER than the 302s. I didnt put them on a scale, but its easy to feel the difference. I think that...

    Another intake question

My 302s have been fully ported and opened up to 360 sized port windows, so I think ill go ahead and run the stealth and see what she'll do. I will say that my modified streetmaster intake ran purdy darn strong on that 318; it had a really flat tourque curve! Thanks guys!

    Another intake question

Some of you may already know about my latest combo that Ive been putting together, but Ill go ahead and give a quick rundown. 65 valiant .030 318 302 heads ported to 360 sized port windows 1.78/1.60 valves Summit SUM-6901 cam 8.6:1 calculated compression ratio Magnum exhaust manifolds 2 into 1...

    1.78 vs 1.88 intake valves

Hey guys. I decided to just leave the heads as is, mostly due to cost issues. I was quite impressed with the performance of the heads as they were, and i didnt want to lose any chamber volume due to valve unshrouding on the closed chambers. With my ultra high deck clearance, I cant afford to...

    connecting rods without oil skeeters

I was assembling my 318 shortblock yeaterday, and I noticed that half of the rod caps didn't have the oil skeeter holes for the opposite piston in them. I've never encountered this before, and find it strange. The rods have not been resized as far as I can tell, and the engine was running before...

    1.78 vs 1.88 intake valves

Anybody else got any input? Im still not convinced that the change will be worth the expense!

    Hopefully just an old gasket.

I have seen the timing cover develop a pinhole in the water pump cavity, letting a nice stream of coolant into the crankcase. Also had a newly assembled smallblock leak coolant from the passage in the intake into the lifter valley. A cooling system pressure tester will be your friend here. Worth...

Think I might have figured it out??? YES it worked! I did all the port work.

    1.78 vs 1.88 intake valves

How does one get pictures from the computer to here? I took some pics of the heads as they are, but i cant figure out how to post them! I measured the bowl below the seat, i get 1.53". Based on that, then the 1.78s would be about right it seems. As far as how it ran with the 1.78s, the...

    1.78 vs 1.88 intake valves

My bowls are already opened wayyy up, hence the statement that the heads are fully ported. At the point they are at now, if i were to "open" them up any further, the valve would fall into the port! Sooo, my thinking is that by going to the 1.88 will allow the valve to sit atop the seat instead...

    1.78 vs 1.88 intake valves

Searched for an answer to this for quite a while, haven't been able to find any hard facts on this topic. Junkyard 360 found...should I pass on a modded motor? pic..

See that snow in the valley between the intake and valve cover? You can bet your butt that water has seeped thru the intake gaskets and into the cylinders, for quite a long time by now judging by the leaves and snow buildup in the engine bay. Ive seen this happen too many times before. It would...

can I use this coil as is?

To hell with the Mopar Goobox! Just run an HEI module and do away with the resistor, the box, and all that stupid wiring that goes with it! The HEI setup uses a coil with a primary resistance of 0.5 to 1 ohm, so just hook it up and forget it.

Trying to buy a 360 , quick question

If you decide to go magnum, better do a leakdown test on it first. Do a quick search on "cracked magnum heads" and youll see. Also, the earlier 308 heads are equally as bad about cracking too.

    pushrod clearance

Can you run early LA heads with the small pushrod holes on a later model roller block with OEM roller cam gear? Can the smaller holes be clearanced to accomidate the different pushrod angle, or is one limited to using 302s or 308s?

New hyperutectics in an old bore

Haha this thought crossed my mind! With a calculated 8:1 compression it would be perfect for a huffer sittin atop the machine, but unfortunatley that isnt an option for this project. As far as honing goes, id let the machine shop handle that. Think im going to drop the block off and let the...

New hyperutectics in an old bore

Hey guys. Im in the process of trying to build up another 318, and I have a few options, each varying in cost. One shortblock I have has been rebuilt sometime in the past with a .030 overbore and fitted with rebuilder pistons that sit a whopping .105 in the hole! The bores show very, very little...

    Thread for the "misfits"

Yes I was referring to the Chevy 307. The Olds 307 is a whole different slug. In fact, the Olds motor probably runs better than the Chevy version! Either way, I'm sure in a head to head race, my little teen will have that 307 by the short n curlys!

    Thread for the "misfits"

I origially posted this in the general discussions. I felt that this belongs here as well. This is a litte soapbox of mine that has really been getting turned over quite a bit lately. There's a fierce debate going on as we speak over at the small block tech about this very subject. Here...

    New to V8's. 340 or 383?

How so? The O.P. never stated his intended purpose in this engine choice, and since the O.P. is "New to V8's" as also stated in the title of the thread itself, I happen to think that this is fairly pertinent information. Its all about the intended usage and the resourses at hand. If I had...

    New to V8's. 340 or 383?

Cudamike, the offer on the roller 360s sounds very tempting for sure. You big city folk got it all up there! However... Im kinda worried about the same thing as 65cuda340; the car this combo will be going in is a 65 valiant. Its got skinny little 215s on the rear, and 3.23 gears. Street only...

    New to V8's. 340 or 383?

See, this is what kinda ticks me off. I love the 360 just as much as the next guy. The longer stroke makes it a superior street engine. However, just strolling down to your local junkyard and pulling a 360 out of a 70's, or even 80's whatever, just isnt an option anymore. The sad truth of the...

    302 heads on a 360 magnum block

This I know for sure. My last company worktruck was a 2000 Ram 2500 5.9 with 300,000 miles on the clock when they sold it. The truck was driven every day, except when I had time off from work. It ate coolant, and used oil, but always ran. If it had been a few days since it was started, it would...

    302 heads on a 360 magnum block

Magnum engines suck!!! So i got my 99 model 5.9 with 90k from a truck that was running only 2 months ago delivered from one of the local auto salvage companies here in town. Everything looked good on the outside, disassembled it down to a long block, everything still looked good. Didnt want to...
