    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

Ok, got a chance to open up the drain plug on a lift. WOW was it tight! The lift allowed us to get it at a better angle. I never really was a fan of jack-stands for anything else other than brakes/oil changes. Upon inspection, the threads looked pretty darn good! We were all amazed, we...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

AND! Make sure to clean all those contacts on the bulkhead connectors. Old Mopars are notorious for issues here. I'd take a light copper brush and gently remove any corrosion on both sides. Then take some dielectric grease to keep dust and moisture out. That big fat red wire was probably the...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

Your best bet is to go to a junkyard or a "You Pull It" and see if they have a harness there. If it were any other car with a V8 then you could buy them new. They don't make a whole lot of stock wiring for the slants. You could try to make your own, or use a voltmeter to test the continuity...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

I found it in my service manual, 1/2-20 tightened at 20 foot pounds. If I want to cut new threads, what size should I go to? What bolt type, and what gasket material. Many thanks!

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

Thanks guys, I'll see if I can get the technician to chase the treads at a straight angle and see if we can repair the threads before taking off the pan. What I'll do is buy the oil pan from my parts friend, keep it in reserve until the technician opens up the original way over-tightened oil...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

Thanks guys for your responses. I'm pretty well pissed off at this point at him. I have a good friend of mine who has a three story barn in upstate NY full of Used and NOS Mopar parts he wants to get rid of. He's checking amongst his sixes for an oil pan that'll fit my year. I might as well...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

I am just speculating. I called the mechanic who changed my oil when I was busy and he said he put RTV all over the threads. He torqued it down incredibly tight, I put my whole shoulder into it and nothing. The thing is, if I finally take the bolt out, and the threads are actually stripped...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

Wait a minute, what amperage is your new alternator? Stock alternator was I believe 35 Amps, anything over on a stock wiring harness and you'll have all types of problems. Can you attach a picture or tell me exactly what red wire melted? Carb Repair is really simple for a one barrel...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

I went to do an oil change today....jacked the car up, jackstands, belgian blocks behind the rear wheels, drop light on the Oil drain Plug and I saw RTV caked all over the bolt. This signified the previous guy who did my oil change when I was busy stripped the threads and sealed it up to mask...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

Is your temperature gauge working? What was it reading? What was your Overheat symptom. Perhaps it was a heat soak condition, I had the same issue in my car when my slant was a daily driver. I'd go to work, and then in the afternoon the car would have a REAL hard time starting up. Nowadays...

    Carter BBS #R32 Choke Rod

I just used a brass coat hanger that I had. Easily bendable and roughly in the same diameter. The clip might be a little bit harder to find. Where it connects to the Choke Pulloff is where the clip came off and eventually the whole rod. Unlike a Holley 1920's choke pulloff rod where there is...

    Carter BBS #R32 Choke Rod

Here's a picture of what I need. This is from a BBD, but its the same shape and bends. I know the BBS versions are a bit smaller.

    Carter BBS #R32 Choke Rod

I recently noticed my choke rod was missing off of my choke pulloff! Maybe that's why I was having such hard cold starts.... I believe that little clip holding it on gave way, it looked pretty insecure anyway, allowing the whole rod to fall off while I was driving. I've looked high and low...

    What part is this called?

Sounds great! I was thinking that, the previous owner omitted the fusible link where that big red fat wire comes from, and the plastic holding all of the firewall connectors looks old, but everything is still there! I heard those things can blow on you and ruin your afternoon. I installed the...

    What part is this called?

Hello FABO! Its been a long time since being on this forum, I got the Dart out of storage and had her purring nicely. I seem to be having intermittent electrical issues, where I go to turn the key to fire up the engine and "click!" all the lights (dome, radio, etc) turn off. I try to turn the...

    late model slant six head

I'd say you'd be fine. I know Slants came with Hydraulic Valves in the 81'-85' years. On a 73 engine you'll need mechanical valves. The heads will work, just convert it over. 1970Dart198

    CarbsOnly Electric Choke Kit

As the Summer begins to heat up, my choke thermostat is beginning to show its age. I'm also quite tired of having to adjust it and fumble around with it. I read a lot of good things about this company's conversion kits for slant six chokes. How have they fared on your engines? I also...

Can't get BBS to Idle properly

Well that explains the stalling out, thanks! I think I've narrowed down the bad idle and acceleration bog. I hear a whistle when I'm driving, The whistle goes away when I accelerate, after the bog, but before that with my foot off the pedal if Im just going I hear a whistle which indicates a...

Can't get BBS to Idle properly

Ok, I fixed the cold start issues, I have a new issue with acceleration bog. This appeared after I rebuilt and installed a new, not re-manufactured carter BBS. The car will fire up just fine at a nice fast idle, I let it warm up for a minute or two and I push on the pedal to put the carb to...

    Hole in holley 1920 carb?

The only hole I'm aware of in the 1920 is the one on the passenger side of the carb, right under where the accelerator pump is. It's supposed to leak when the accelerator pump diaphragm is compromised.

Can't get BBS to Idle properly

The car can idle with the PCV installed and the ECS hose for the Bowl Vent plugged. If I have both hoses plugged into the car at the same time it wont idle for anything. I also have a noticeable bog in acceleration when I go from a stop. It bogs down almost till it squeaks out dead, and...

Can't get BBS to Idle properly

Another thing, with the pcv hooked up. The slant fires up then dies. Without the pcv hooked up it'll idle fine at 850 rpm all day. Vacuum leak? I also have the bowl vent hooked up to the fuel pump. Could this be the issue? How do I fix this so I can keep the hose? I would also like to add...

Can't get BBS to Idle properly

I just rebuilt and installed an unused BBS for my 198 slant six. It has ECS, with the fuel pump hose for vapor. It also has a hot idle compensator valve which I put a new gasket on and installed. I set the float to a 1/4 inch inverted. I put it on the car and she fired right up. But the...

Firing up the Slant 6 after 5 months sitting

Hello! I'm returning to the US after 5 months of being away. I left my Dart with a 198 ci Slant Six in my garage safely tucked in for the winter. I put Sta-Bil gas treatment in the gas tank, changed the oil and drove the car around for a few miles before storing it for the winter. I also...

91 octane to stop vapor lock?

For what its worth, I would like to ask, what degree Thermostat are you running? I originally had the 195 degree thermostat, obviously hotter, so I swapped it to a 180 degree thermostat, stock for my 1970 198 slant six. I noticed a pretty decent difference in overall engine temperature looking...

WANTED: Slant six Holley 1 brl carb (Preferably 1920 model)

From my recent experience, I'd go with a Carter BBS or a Holley 1945. My 1920 leaked fuel all over the intake manifold. If you're gonna stick with the 1920 make sure the mating surfaces of the float bowl and carburetor body are not warped and clean as a whistle. The gaskets for the bowls are...

1 bbl kickdown linkage on 2bbl

I would go with the Lokar kickdown cable. Its totally adjustable and I've read its not hard to hook up. There is no way for a 1bbl kickdown linkage to work on a 2bbl. If you want factory original, I would highly recommend going to a "pull it yourself" car yard, and looking around for a setup...

    225 carb change

You can put a Holley on it. Any 1bbl that came with the slants will work interchangeably. Mine originally from the factory had a Carter BBS on it, it came with a 1920 when I bought it from a guy. I bought a remanufactured 1920 to replace THAT. Junk! The Engine ran, but it never ran to its...
