Just can't my 340 to run well on 91 octane.

Would spark plugs that are too hot cause some of the problems mentioned? The Autolite 66s cross reference to Champion N12Ys. That's the recommended plug for the stock '73 340s. However, my '72 Duster 340 called for N9Ys. So, I bought a set of those this afternoon. I'm waiting on some...

Would somebody please read this spark plug for me?

So, the consensus is that the engine is detonating? Spark plugs will be easy enough to fix. I just bumped up the primary jets from 70s to 74s. One thing I noticed when I took the primary fuel off was that the gasket had slipped at the top center and was not sealing the bowl. Would that cause...

Would somebody please read this spark plug for me?

This goes back to my thread about my car not running well on 91 octane. I just pulled a plug and got a picture of it. All the plugs look like this. I've looked at several charts on various Internet sites but none look like this. Thanks.

Just can't my 340 to run well on 91 octane.

IIRC, I've got a 6.0 pv. The engine has 11" of vacuum at idle in gear. I'm pretty sure I have 72 jets up front. It's been a while since I have been into the carburetor. It's got a metering block on the secondary side. The choke plate and shaft have been removed. It's got the tan accelerator...

Just can't my 340 to run well on 91 octane.

What do y'all think about this cam? It's the next step up Lunati Voodoo. My car's got a 2800 PTC converter and 3.91 rear gears. I have no desire to mess with nitrous. Hydraulic. Hot Street cam, likes 2800 converter, Hi-Rise type dual plane intake with 750cfm carb, headers, 10:1 compression...

Just can't my 340 to run well on 91 octane.

Lots of great questions and responses here. I appreciate the help and will try to answer as best I can. I am not running vacuum advance. The advance plate is locked in place with two screws. The distributor is a MP unit with easily adjustable mechanical advance. I had the harmonic damper...

Just can't my 340 to run well on 91 octane.

When I built my engine I measured everything except the cylinder volume and the combustion chamber volume. I don't have the stuff needed to measure liquid volume. But, here are the specs that I was able to measure; Bore: 4.08" Pistons are 0.020" above the deck. (The block required decking of...

Do you have your PVC hooked up? What about the end seals on the intake manifold? Are they in place?

best type of oil for 71 340 engine

Valvoline VR-1 10w-30. It's got a high zinc content for your flat tappet cam. Or, if you want a thicker oil, it also comes in 20w-50.

    found the elusive oil leak

Was it an anodized aluminum plug? I used those just once. Even though I cleaned the block threads and used Teflon tape on the plugs, they still leaked. Ever since then I've used the original style steel plugs and have had zero leaks.

Does anyone make a small block engine cradle that's worth a @#!!

Too bad you aren't closer. I have one in my attic that I built for my 340, but don't need anymore. I'd just give it to you.

    fixing leaking rear main seal

Dropping the center link helps tremendously when pulling the pan. When you put the new seal in, don't line it up with the parting lines on the main cap. Rotate it about 1/4" then use a very light coat of silicone on the ends and bolt everything back up.

    aluminum heads

The RHS heads, fully assembled, are $875 for a pair at Hughes. E-brock aluminum heads are $715.50 each at Summit.

    how to install headers?

I’ve installed just about every kind of header made on small block A-bodies. They are all a real pain to install. TTIs are a little easier than others but, even with them, the job is far from easy. Disconnect the battery. If you drop a socket between the starter’s positive post...

    lunati voodoo cams

I've got the 60403 in my 340 Dart and love it. It really starts pulling at 2500 and is strong all the way to my self-imposed 6250 red line.

    That v8 sound.

My wife and I just got back from a nice little cruise in my Dart. The engine was just purring at cruise and my wife commented how she really loved its sound. I've got a set of Classic Chambered mufflers that are just one of eight pairs ever made. They are modeled after the original Thrush...

    cleaning parts

For the love of Pete, DO NOT use gasoline for anything other than making your car run. Because of gasoline's high evaporation rate, all you need is one little spark to ruin your whole day, or your whole life. There are many safer and less explosive alternatives for cleaning parts.

Anybody ever use nitro methane oil as an additive????

There's no reason to run 70wt oil. And it wastes a lot of horsepower trying to turn the oil pump with oil that thick.

    340 piston question

If it still has the '70 crank, it's forged. Does the engine have the harmonic damper? The damper for the forged crank has no counterweights. The cast crank damper has a large counterweight on the front and is marked as for a cast crank only.

    Anyone decode a 340 block?!?

Tell the guy to send a good, clear picture of the crank and post it here. A cast crank has a thin part line. The forged crank has a wide part line. Also, if you hit (lightly) the crank on the snout with a ball peen hammer, the cast crank gives off a high-pitched "ping." The forged crank, being...

Fresh engine, wiped cam? Tick? (new pics added)

Make sure you contact the shop that built the engine. Did they offer any kind of warranty on their work? If so, any warranty might be voided if you do the work. When I built engines for a living, and someone had an issue, (which happened only once - it was a BBC), any warranty or guarantee was...

Looking for valve cover gasket advice

Get the Mopar rubber/steel gaskets and you'll never have another leak. Sorry but I don't have the part number. I've had those gaskets on my car five years and they still don't leak. And, that includes removing and reinstalling the valve covers countless times.

    340 Build advice needed!

Ditch the Torker 340 and go with an Edelbrock Performer RPM or the RPM Air Gap. The Torker is 1970s technology and is better suited for the track than the street. You'll be much happier with the Performer RPM or the Air Gap.

    I am Amazed!

When I rebuilt my 727 a couple of years ago, I could not believe how easy it was. And, I couldn't get over how few parts there actually are inside it. Best of all, after I put it back together it worked perfectly and is still going strong. However, I still can't tell you how it...
