8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

More data! There are many different variations of the Ford 8.8 axle. One of them is best suited for the use in a Jeep and that would be the Explorer (or Mountaineer) 31 spline 8.8. If you have found one off a Aerostar, Mustang, F-150 etc, you should really pass it up and look for a Explorer...

    8-3/4 Wheel/Axle bearing question

Thx for the heads up. I have changed a few but that's when I was young and Dumber than I am now! LOL Stupidity prevailed and I made it happen but whether its worth the aggravation is up for debate! LOL Ill have to search the #'s you gave too! Im not sure what the rear is from originally. I dont...

    8-3/4 Wheel/Axle bearing question

Are there several different bearing sizes? I need to get the bearings but dont wanna have it all apart and not have the correct parts to get it back together. I have small bolt pattern axles, but are there several different axle diameters? Anyone have the correct part #? From the...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Its in my nature to over think it! LOL I design Industrial Compressor packages all day! Engineering is what I do! LOL I do however plan to just go get one to compare however I very rarely move forward blindly. It always seems to bite me later.

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Ok here is a pic of the 8.8 and the offset. just a pic no measurments. But you can start to add things up in your head now that you have a pic to see. Dont mind all the junk on this axle, its being put in a Jeep apparently. Below that is an 8-3/4

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Def. Not going to bother with the Mustang rear just because i dont want to have to source all the parts in order to run the 5 bolt pattern.

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

So the pinion shaft is also offset in the carrier? To which side? Does it help or make it even worse? Not that I plan to install a rear end that is way off, but... As far as an offset drive shaft goes.. Its ok to have an offset that isnt extreme as long as the angles are the same at...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

So based on the data I have dug up. If I get two "short" axels and shorten the overall housing, it should go from 59.25" to 56.25". Typical Bullit rims are a 5.72" back space. I may need that in the front but would love to run something wide in the rear. (like Jgale has posted). Hmmm I...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Digging for details! 1. Axle width is 59.25'' for the Explorer. 2. 2-3/8" offset to the passenger side 3. 1310 u-joint at dif. 4. The 'long' axle is 30.5" and the 'short' one is ~27.5", so it would shave about 3" off of the overall width and center the pinion. 5. Link...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

With what Jgale and Fishy68 have mentioned. I am wondering if its really needed to narrow it or not. Anyone know how much longer the drivers side axle is? If it is comparible to the offset of our A-bodies, then the only reason to narrow it would be for the older deeper offset wheels. While I...

Man I really want to get started on this build asap! The wife will kill me if she finds I am doing more fab work on my car and not hurrying up to get to her 46'! LOL I think if I gather all the stuff I knock out all the fab work in one afternoon. So here is my list. Anyone with...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

LMAO.... ^^^^ hey man, I dunno about you but I have a budget to worry about. If I can manage my goal cheaper, and sell my 8-3/4 to fund the project thats even better. Not to mention if I pass this 8-3/4 on to a guy doing a resto.... All the better. My car was never a sought aftere car to...

8-3/4 Sure Grip (cone Type) --VALUE ?--

Guess I was too excited when I put the SG rear in my car a few years back! I was incorrect in saying it was a cone type. It is in fact a 489 case and actually has 3:23 gears. I pulled it tonight and after the discovery that it is the 489 and the fact that it is the pinion bearing that is shot. I...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Thx for the info!!! Always good to compare your ideas to someone who has it completed! HP shouldn't be a real issue. My 360 is nearly stock, just a cam and eddy top end. Nothing special. Again, Thanks!!!!

8-3/4 Sure Grip (cone Type) --VALUE ?--

OK update!!!! I went ahead and decided to keep the 8 3/4 for the time being. I was able to get an open carrier in good shape, same gears, for 75.00! This will be a quick fix and have me back on the road in a days worth of work. Now, whether I sell the Sure Grip Carrier is a whole different...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Ok, so my options have led me to the 8.8 Ferd rear diff. The gear choices are good, they can be found with disc brakes, and limited slip, fairly commonly. The width is 60" flange to flange so my track changes but I planned on runnig a bigger "Bullit" style rim anyhow. This swap also bumps me...

8-3/4 Sure Grip (cone Type) --VALUE ?--

Thanks for all the info and opinions guys. Ill decide exactly what Im going to do, and then go from there. There rear is by no means destroyed. I heard the bearing noise, had it out a few times and then said the heck with destroying the rear or getting stuck somewhere... "Im not driving it til'...

8-3/4 Sure Grip (cone Type) --VALUE ?--

Well I have a feeling that this is a carrier bearing that is making racket. I have "lost" a few rear difs before and its def. a bearing! As far as the history of this rear goes, I have no idea, I have had it in the Valiant for about 2 years now, and just started driving it this spring on a...

8-3/4 Sure Grip (cone Type) --VALUE ?--

Its in my Valiant, I know its an A-body rear! LOL flange to flange is what ever it nees to be. Isnt it 58-1/2 or 5/8 or something like that?

8-3/4 Sure Grip (cone Type) --VALUE ?--

Hey guys, I may sell my 8-3/4 SG rear. Its the cone type. (741) ? Think thats correct. 373 gears, Original A-body rear, small bolt pattern. I am wondering what its worth. I know it needs to be rebuilt. Whatcha think? Ill post it in the Classifieds if its worth selling. If any of you...

Where to get a trans linkage bushing????

Hey guys I have my old 81 D-150 I am trying to find a bushing for the shaft that goes from the frame rail over to the trans. Its the shifter linkage. I have looked at Dorman/Motormite parts and they only have the smaller bushing for other points along the linkage. Anyone have any ideas? It a...

    Basic shift kit

TF2 kit all the way. Ill be honest I was reluctant to crack open the valve body and start modifying peices like the kit requires but I took my time and checked off each step through out the mod and it works great! I swapped in the kit and an 8 3/4 Suregrip and Ill be honest when I nailed for...
