Help me win this argument 400 in a 72.

If you want a quick R&R, go with the 360. If you want to build a killer engine down the road, get the 400. I remember the 400 back in the 70s; it was considered a boat anchor because it came from the factory in such a de-tuned condition. However, the 400 block is now a hot ticket for making...

    400's are they any good?

Here is a nice write-up I found on one guy's 400 build. I think Andy Finkbeiner wrote it. Topic: 451 Manifesto The 451 is arguably the best BB Mopar engine combination available. The 451, which is made by dropping a 440 crank into a 400 block, has almost perfect design parameters. Deck...

mech Roller vs Mech flat tappet cam Q

Technical question here: how does the roller lifter negate the effect of low zinc content in present-day oils? Is it strictly due to the roller lifter not needing to spin?

Thanks, you guys. I need to do some brainstorming on how I want to build mine. I want it to be adjustable between small and big blocks.

    Engine test stand

Have any of you guys built your own engine test stands? I would like to build one for engine break-in and testing. Do you have any wiring and tubing diagrams? How about necessary instruments?

    Stuck pistons/Crank, any ideas?

If you do not have an engine hoist, put some mechanical advantage to work for you. If you want to get the block up on a work bench and have no friends handy, you could rig up a hoist by using some chain, a long 4x4, and something sturdy to use as a fulcrum. I had to do this once. Because the...

    Help with identification

I believe that the number sequence 2468130-11 refers to the casting process. 2468130 is the casting core number and the -11 indicates the number of revisions that were made to the casting core mold. the revisions could represent changes in the block itself or simply refinishing and bringing...

HELP!! need experts advice on 440 trouble.

If the heads or decks are cut, you also need to cut the intake manifold. Make a simple drawing for illustration. Draw the front of an engine with heads and manifold on. Draw a centerline down the center of each head or down the port face. You will see that lowering the heads on the...

    383 vs 400

The dimensions of the once-crappy 400 seem to be nearly ideal for performance builds these days. http://www.arengineering.com/articles/ttstroker.html Low Buck, Low Deck Mopar Stroker By Andy Finkbeiner Photos by Ron Valera When the 426W in my 1965 Coronet spun a rod...

    400 to 512 Build

Hey, Ram, Pat's tunnel ram looks like a piece of art. I know he put a lot of thought into developing it. I would definitely buy one, but my 'Cuda will be street only and I am afraid the manifold would require a more radical cam than I need.

    470 vs. 512

There seems to be a trend in building the once lowly 400 into screamers. The geometry of the engine apparently leads to big HP gains. One of the Mopar mags built one about a year ago and it looked very good.

383 dart, center link hits oil pan HELP!!

I remember reading that a big block should use the C-body big block oil pan (187, I think) for linkage clearance. Of course, a torch and a hammer would accomplish the same thing, but watch out for your pan baffles, if you have them.

    Bracing shock towers?

Very interesting engineering question is posed in this thread. If I have time this weekend (not likely, however), I will take some measurements and draw out the geometry of the front suspension area, including K-frame. That way, we might get an idea of torsional loads on the area. Very...

My apology to the site & mrtires

I needed a utility vehicle when I moved to Texas, so my options were a van or a pick-em-up (Redneck Corvette). It rains a lot here, so I decided that a van would be more practical. It is a 1995 Dodge Ram with a V6 and no windows, other than the front three. The pain is failing. The inside is...
