    what $$ is a complete 8 3/4 worth?

Wow! I paid twice that for a "completely rebuilt" 489 case 323 cone Sure Grip from a member here, and the thing was JUNK when I got it home. Asshole acknowledged that he fucked me, then proceeded to blow me off for over a year now. POS scumbag. You got a REAL good deal there. George

Whats wrong with this thing ???????

Well, then either 2 things prevent it from locking the front axle......the switch on top of the transfer case, or the vacuum motor motor on the front axle..........assuming that the bulb in the dash is not burned out. You can use a vacuum pump on the vacuum motor to see if it's frozen. One...

Whats wrong with this thing ???????

All of this is correct, but also there is a 4 port vacuum switch located on top of the transfer case that switches vacuum signal to lock or unlock the front hubs when you move the shifter stick in the cab. I have had to replace 2 of them so far in my 1990. If there is a 4X4 indicator light on...

put in 8 3/4, now have vibration

Disconnect the driveshaft from the pinion flange, spin it 180º, and reinstall it. Most times this will correct the vibration you describe. If it does correct the problem, mark the pinion & driveshaft so if you ever need to remove it, you can reinstall it the correct way. George

    8-3/4 sure grip unit

Exactly right. Thanks guys for confirming what I already knew. I guess I just needed to say it outloud! LOL Damn, though, I wish I had a second set of axles to set it up with before I took the car apart. I'd hate like hell to have the car "down" for any length of time in the summer should...

    8-3/4 sure grip unit

I have a 489 sure grip CONE STYLE unit with 323 gears. I disassembled the unit from the case to remove the center button, but how do you line the splines back up between the cones and the unit so the axle will slide back in? It looks like this needs to be done before I can tighten the case half...

Green bearings & sure-grip center units

OK here's the scoop....... First, the axles. They're Moser axles that came in the car when I got it. I have no idea what the original length should be or if these are stock length or not. Second is the SG unit. Bought it from a member here a few years ago who is now selling a B Body in the...

Green bearings & sure-grip center units

It's a cone style SG unit. I've been looking in the service manual, but it says the unit isn't servicable, so how does a guy get it apart, and back together without messing it up? Thanks for the reply. George

Green bearings & sure-grip center units

If I remember right, that "button" inside the sure grip unit has to come out in order to install the axles that have been converted to Green bearings. How do you get the button out of there? Also, how can I tell if the axle splines are lined up before I try to install this thing in the...

    Balancing Act

Try rotating the driveshaft 180º at the diffy, and reinstall. Sometimes that will take out a minor vibration. Good Luck! George

Horrible hard clutch pedal after hydraulic install

Something is wrong. The one in my Dart & my truck are pretty easy to press down, and VERY smooth. If it was me, I wouldn't keep mashing it down until the problem is found. George

    Driveline "bind", or drag?

I do on aluminum wheels, but not on steel wheels. I usually just tighten them down good. George

    Driveline "bind", or drag?

Chuck, It's looking like the outside diameter of the axle flange is too small, and the seat ring on the backside of the wheel is a bigger diameter than the axle flange. If you overtighten the lugs, it wants to "curl" the brake drum over the axle flange. If I had a set of Mopar axles I'd swap...

    Driveline "bind", or drag?

Hi Joe. It has Moser BBP axles with 10X2.5" brakes. The shoes measure 2.5" wide. It's almost as it the wheel has put a "crown" on the drum after the lugs were tightened for some reason. I'm using wheel vintiques Mopar repro steel wheels. I ground a chamfer onto the edge of the shoes and it...

    Driveline "bind", or drag?

I pulled the driveshaft out, and it spins freely in the trans. The diffy seems to be the problem, but the problem went away once I loostened the lug nuts. It seems the brake drum is hitting the outer edge of the brake shoes once the wheel is tightened down. I'm using stamped steel wheels 15X8...

    Driveline "bind", or drag?

For some reason, I can barely roll the car forward or back by hand all of a sudden. It was fine until yesterday when I drove it out of the garage and turned it around in the street. Thats when I noticed the problem when I pushed the clutch in and the car stopped rolling by itself. If I drive the...

    3.23 or 3.55?

Pretty car! What color is the interior?? I have 323's in my 69 Dart automatic with the 14" tires and it's a dream on the highway. I wish I had a Suregrip rear. :( On the other hand, my last 72 Corvette had 355 gears from the factory with a 4 speed, and it too was a dream on the highway. The...

    Tightening the 2>3 overlap in a 727

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Kinda sounds like my car. If I have my foot to the floor (shifting auto or manual) it will not shift out of 1st gear. I have to back off the pedal in order for it to shift. I was told my kickdown linkage isn't properly adjusted, and because I can't get it any better than it is right...

    removing pinion seal

Nevermind the torque spec Snake, you need to set it right back to where it was when you removed it. Mark it before you take it apart, and tighten it right back up till the marks line up. George

    8 3/4 Sure Grip Info

How difficult is it to set up the rear gear pattern once you install one of these units into an open rear? Does it require any special tools like dial indicators etc? Last diffy I had rebuilt, I had to have a pro set the pinion depth on my 12 bolt Chevy. I know next to nothing about setting up...

727 Kickdown Linkage Adjustment - HELP!

Well, I readjusted the rod at the carb so there was about 1/8" of play at WOT. While I was under there, I hooked up my timing light, and the timing at idle, no vac advance was at 10º BTDC. I left it there. I adjusted the front brakes a little and took it for a ride. The trans shifts 1-2-3 and...

727 Kickdown Linkage Adjustment - HELP!

OK guys, thanks. I'm on a mission. I'll have my squeeze punch the gas from inside, and I'll adjust the underhood rod. Shorter shifts sooner, and longer shifts later. It seems like a little adjustment under the hood goes a long way. I'll report back after I set the timing, readjust the rear...
