    Talked to my transmission guy-------

But dont you have to cut with any auto overdrive transmission? Just less with some? What I have seen with the a500 or a518, there is less than a GM brand. Plus with GM you need special adapter to bolt it together.

    Bouncy needle on speedometer

In the past when I had that happen to me, speedo needle bouncing, I pulled the speedo cluster out, then took the cable off, used powdered graphite, the kind used for door locks, and some WD-40 to get it to move down into the cable housing. Other than the work of getting the speedo housing out to...

Best thing is you are in the right spot for knowledge! There are a lot of people here with the experience and knowledge to help you. More good than bad will come out of this.

    auto trans 225 engine

The convertor has to be engaged. Means you don't just push it on until it stops. Not unless you got lucky and hit the tangs right off the bat. Tangs being slots. Usually you slide the convertor on until it stops, then rotate the convertor until it slides on another 2 inches? That's how the...

axle play... pulled axle and saw this.....

In the first photo, what is that showing to the left of the rubber? Is that a crack, or some kind of deformation on the axle?

Hang in there, you'll get it figured out.

    jumping speedo

Best solution, plus I used WD40 to help it travel down the sheath. Same graphite as is used in door locks. Hardest part is getting the instrument panel out far enough to pull the cable. Rest is easy. That's what I did with my old 71 Swinger. Speedo bounced and made a low noise. Did that and no...

    narrowing a b-body rear

Bad Sport had a good statement about green bearings also. The shop I talked to about narrowing the housing mentioned green bearings also and then something about adjusting the axles to make sure they are centered or something? I'm not sure if it was no adjusting/aligning with them? If that is...

    narrowing a b-body rear

Thanks everyone! I think that is what I will do. Leave the width as is and relocate the perches, and look into the Dr. Diff offset kit. I will get new green bearings tho. No sense it being what I think is stupid cheap. Thanks again!!

    narrowing a b-body rear

LOL, yeah, that's what I have heard from many others. Although some said why even relocate the perches? the mounting is what, one inch total? That comes out to 1/2 inch each side? That would definitely be the least expensive route, as the perches are still there. I have some cop wheels, how much...

    narrowing a b-body rear

LOL, sorry about the bad link. I just went and measured the housing, flange to flange and it's 54 1/4. According to the moparts list, if it's right, that makes it a 65-67 housing. The reason I would like it narrowed is because I, or anyone if I should end up selling it, would have a greater...

    narrowing a b-body rear

Ok, I had the wrong link. I now have the link I was referring to. I have a housing for a b-body. Along the way I picked up the pieces to end up with a whole 8 3/4 rear, backing plates shock mounts, everything but new perches. I would like to get this narrowed to use in my '70 Dart. I have...

    Uneducated, would YOU buy?

I spent $100 for a b body housing and axles. Another $50 for a 741 chunk, open, with 3.23 gears. $150 for complete brakes, backing plates and shock plates. $350 for clutch sure grip. Yet to have perches and bearings and put together.
  14. L

    Good buy?

Ok, so you may have to cut it down to fit. But......you have a housing plus a chunk, plus brake hardware for $175.00. If it's a B-body rear, you just might be able to cut the axles down, that depends on the axles though. If you're happy with it, then it's a good deal.

    5 or 6 speed conversion

Everything I've read about the Tremec swaps have one thing in common. You are gonna have to cut the car to get it to fit. It cost around $4500 for a Passon A 855 five speed. You will wait to get one, but NO cutting. Closest thing to bolt in out there.

    sure grip on e-bay

Looking for a sure grip for a b-body rear I have with a 741 open carrier. It will have the tubes cut for a-body. I know there is only a 1 inch difference for the perches, but isn't the overall length a couple of inches longer? Any way, here is a link to somethong I saw on ebay. Tell me what you...

    741 v 742 v 489 housings

Ok, thanks to all for the information. I don't know a whole lot about rearends. I definitely know more now. It seems either I change axles to sbp, or change backing plates to the larger size, thats 11in x 2.5 shoes. I'm only out the $18 I paid for the smaller plates. Inexpensive lesson. I may...

Since I am able to bolt the plates up like that, does that mean I can use them? Thanks.

    741 v 742 v 489 housings

Ok, brakes dia is 10 in, shoe width is 1 3/4. Perch to perch is 44 in., flange to flange is 54 in. Didn't do the back of axle to bearing. I took the time to put one plate with the axle on. Just for the giggles. It looks to be BBP axles. See pics. Thanks!

    741 v 742 v 489 housings

Thanks oldkimmer, but how can I tell? I was able to slide these plates onto the housing all the way. There is a "flat" spot cutout I had to line up first. Does that mean these will work then? Thanks!

Excellent! Nice price and you got the good pinion.

    741 v 742 v 489 housings

Just got back. There was a 69 Dart GT in the garage. Looking good. It is the dad of who I got the case from. I mentioned about getting a 8 3/4 housing and piecing the rear end together, since I can't afford the $1500 for a rear end. Then said something about backing plates and was told the old...

    741 v 742 v 489 housings

Ok, thanks for the replies. I picked up a B-body housing and axles for what I thought was a good price, $100. It looks like the case can take either the clutch or cone sure grip. At least I'm hoping.

    741 v 742 v 489 housings

I have a chance to get a 741 case and gears (open, 3.23) for $50. Since the pinion is 1.375 in diameter, how much oomph will this take? I have a Aug 70 340 with a six pak combo, pocket ported x-heads that I will use on this. Probably a bigger cam also. Will eventually move to 3.55 gears, but now...

    price to narrow a B body 8 1/4 rear

It is, why I need to narrow something like four inches total. Two each side. Cheaper it seems for now, hopefully upgrade to 8 3/4 later.

    price to narrow a B body 8 1/4 rear

I found this one complete from drum to drum for $200. I found a place in Il that will narrow it for $175 total. That is if they get it all tore down and cleaned. Might have to get new axles, that is if there is not enough spline left after cutting. Thanks for the replies.

    price to narrow a B body 8 1/4 rear

One grand seemed a bit ridiculous to me also. I mean, it all has to be square and parallel, but that seemed to much. And yeah, that would include adding splines to the axles. Thanks.

    price to narrow a B body 8 1/4 rear

I saw this deal, I thought, on a 8 1/4 rear from a 71 b body. It won't fit an a body w/o some narrowing. Place I called here where I live said cost would be around $1000. LOL, for that price I can get a 8 3/4. Does 1 grand sound about right? Thanks.

I don't know a lot about auto tranny's either, but I will say this. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground and chocked before you crawl under it.
