    so which blocks can be bored to take standard 340 pistons , just curious as I have a 68 - 318 also a 69 - 318 and a 77-4 speed truck with a 318 in it. that would be 0.13 boreing job guess if the walls are thick enough why not.

    as far as I know all X blocks were 318s and had to be bored to 340. so geting a X block with 340 stamped on it would not happen. But I do not know everything . LOL. Just what I read, and that is not always correct.

    there should be casting numbers ,they are often hard to see as the rocker assembly covers them you may need a flashlight. There is also letter codes located on the outside of the heads by the spark plug holes a U or J or if your lucky an X x heads will have the big valves 2.02 and some J heads...

    casting # 3418915 used on 1970 - 340 6Bbl T/A also on 1971 - 360 also on 1972 - 340/360 1973 used different casting numbers , you may have lucked out and got pre 72 heads - the good ones with 2.02 intakes , I suggest that you measure them , either way they are good heads with good sized ports...
