Can someone break down timing an engine (specifically a 5.9 Magnum) to something I can understand? I'm kind of stupid about this stuff. I thought I understood timing, but I realized that much of my engine's issues could stem from bad timing and too much/little advance, so I would like to retime...

Mine picked up a tapping too ever since I broke a rocker bolt, but it moves around the valvetrain. Not sure, but I know I didn't overfill (5.5qts) the oil. It's seemed relatively reliable nonetheless

That's funny. I have the /6 to v8 Schumacher mounts with Comp headers, and mine fell in. Granted, it's not easy to get the header bolts (I also got ARP 3/8" head) started, but once they are, the headers basically put themsevles in place. I didn't even have to ding a tube.

lookin sweet!!!!!!! did you go with the summit exhaust kit? Also, how hard were your headers to install? I had a cake time with the headers, but everyone else I've talked to has choice words with theirs before they drop in.

I have a manual fuel pump, but its had two pumps on it (one was leaky) and is still ticking. Both sides are oiling fine, and there's no evidence of cracked rockers, I believe. And now I have a significant misfire at about 1500RPM.

So I ran it without valve covers off. On the driver's side, the valvetrain is noisy, but on what seems to be all of the rockers. On the passenger's side, the valvetrain is dead silent. Should I be hearing noise from my valvetrain? Remember, these are supposed to be zero-lashed.

definitely hollow. I made sure of that even before I took them out of the parts store.

that's the thing, I can't tell. I hear it on both sides pretty well, maybe a little better on the opposite side that the pushrod was replaced. Where I hear it real good is when I get my ear near the intake. I also should mention that this tick comes around when it's cold and doesn't go away...

as far as my calipers could tell they were within .010", though they aren't really that good, the calipers. I'll pull the valve covers tomorrow.

Well it's not a header leak. Definitely mechanical and you hear it when you put your ear to the intake. I took a hopefully good sound byte and will have it up later tonight. There seems to be a miss too; I have to time it. Would off-timing cause a mechanical tap?

I'll also add that I have perfect oil pressure - 75 cold, 50 warm at idle.

not positive. How should I check? I've been up and down that engine bay with my ear close to the valve cover and header flange and can't hear anything.
