I think Indy still sells Aerohead refurbished factory J heads for around $500. The next step up from that would be RHS for about $1,300.

You're going to have to be more specific. What is your budget? Are you wanting to use a factory casting or aftermarket? Cast iron or aluminum? Race or street?

It will probably run like a 318. Heads are where the power is and they are a really bad place to not spend money. I would build the engine the other way around. Start with an old 318, put on a good top end (RHS and maybe an RPM intake), then when you have the money you can build a 408 bottom end.

LA is a term used for these engines: '64-'69 273 '67-later 318 '68-'73 340 '71-later 360 There is also the B series (350,361,'61-up 383,400) and the RB series ('59-'60 383,413,426,440).
