‘67 Barracuda Increased Fuel Capacity

Hi I have a ‘67 barracuda with the stock gas tank. I think it’s 16-18 gallons
(based on the internet).

Does anyone sell or has anyone ever made a fuel tank that would fit in the stock location, with the spare wheel well and fill tube that holds around 25-30 gallons?

I did a quick search but nothing really popped up. I do realize one could be fabricated and it will probably come to that but I thought I couldn’t be the first person to want more capacity.

Your 67 has a 18 gallon tank.

The stock tank surrounds the spare tire well, so you loose some capacity there.

As for aftermarket larger tanks. Not that will bolt into the stock location. If you remove the spare tire well, you could maybe fit a 60s style van gas tank.

You could mount it in the trunk with proper seals etc so you don't fill your car with gas fumes.

But remember fuel is about 6 to 7 lbs per gallon.

I would attempt to make the tank a little deeper by adding a few inches to the bottom while maintaining the tank straps in the same location. Same theory as has been done to oil pans. Possibly utilizing a skid plate as well.

I installed an overdrive, a smaller rear gear, a deeper low gear, a modified carb, and a dash-mounted, adjustable- timing-module with which I can find the exact best cruise-timing. Fuel efficiency increased by over 50%.
That would equate to your 18gallon tank holding 27 gallons.
I spent a lotta money, but the car was my DD. I doubt I ever got to a break-even point, but cruising at 2240, beats the heck out of 3160.

Since Barracudas don't have an isolated trunk, and even the Val/ Darts are not "sealed" really, there is zero chance I would screw around with a big tank back there in the pass compartment, and frankly would think twice or 3 or 6 times about a bigger tank period. Even with a big thumper getting only 10 mpg, that's 170-180 miles, just how far do you need to go.

you should be getting "ROUGHLY" about the same number of miles as you do per gallons of fuel available from a stock small block with a stock gas tank. 18 times 18 is 324 miles per tank. Even if you are beefed up and are not getting the full 324 miles per tank is it worth it? Unless you are driving long distances often and have terrible service at gas stations, I couldn't see how it would possibly be worth it to increase the tank size considering how the spare tire and tank are buddied up here...and as DANA pointed out you would be gaining another passenger in fuel weight.

The question was, larger replacement fuel tank or modding the original keeping the spare tire well and fill tube. If enlarging the original tank to accommodate 7 extra gallons of fuel to meet the minimum requested, then the added weight is 44 pounds since gas weighs 6.3 pounds per gallon. I missed the part where you're adding another fuel tank in the trunk.

Wow, that’s quite a bit to think about. Thank you.

I got this idea a couple weeks ago when me and a friend were assembling a roadster shop chassis for a ‘67 Chevelle.
I dropped in the gas tank and asked how many gallons it held which was 35. The more I stared at it the smaller it looked. The chassis holds a 335 tire, fabricated 9 inch and dual 3 inch exhaust.
Just one of those things I got fixated on. Road trips in Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and Montana can get desolate.
