My buddies 65 dart charger has an 8 3/4 he installed with 355's, four barrel 650, and 4-speed. It was a 273 four barrel from the factory and goes pretty good.:burnout:

Don't forget...factory 273 4bbl's (Commando's and Chargers) had 10.5: 1 compression stock. Your 2 bbl motor is closer to 8.5, so don't overcarb, or over cam it....you'll kill what little bottom end you have now.

I'd go Comp Cams XE256H or XE262H, Eddy Performer and Duals and headers. If you want a little more pull the heads do a mild port job mill the heads and run the thinnest gasket you can get.

Just electronic ignition and a few tuning tweaks can make it drive a whole lot better.
You will need to upgrade the charging system a to get proper operation from the electronic ignition.
A dual plane intake from a later model 318 helps a lot too.
I've spent very little coin doing these things for my 67 model 273 to get my happy moparing on.
If you've ever driven something as big and heavy as a Cordoba or Fith Ave with a 318 2 brl , you know your 273 should be capable of moving your A-body a lot better than it does.

66 is solid a cam but no reason to stick with solid cam.

All you need is push rods, there aren't many small solids cams.

That's cuz you gots china, I mean, COMP cams in your favorites........ :sign3:

I gots two right here..... One is in my solid lift 390, builds way more midrange than the 268/276 voodoo I took out, funny huh?

So, I am going to cookie cut two cams I have used more than once each, on 318's, and one 273, and had ground by ISKY.

For a 273 4sp car, or maybe a 2500 converter....... a nice cam.

42* Overlap

I had them grind it with a 106* lobe center for my 390, sounds bad ***, pulls to 5K nice in my 390, used in 318's before, pulls nice to 5500.

Auto car, if that's what you have, I have it in my wifes 2x ramcharger, stock 2bbl 273, with a performer intake, 500EB, and stock 70 318 truck manifolds. Makes the 273 feel like it has much more cubic inch than it has, idles real nice, has a beautiful rolling choppitty like a nice small solid cam should have. Runs hard to 4500, pulls past 5K, you can shift at 6K if you like, and gets 17+mpg.

40* Overlap

I chose a 108* lobe center for it, same deal, from ISKY, right off the grinder, for me. Love them guys.

I'm not trying to step on people's toes here the OP wanted some ideas I gave him my opinion I got a 5th Ave with a comps XE262H, eddy intake and carb with headers and duals there was a write up with the similar set up with same cam on a stock 318 long block and made 282HP @ 5000 and worked pretty good until my rear end went. I was just trying to get the OP headed in the right direction. I just use Comp Cams as reference because 80% of the build up's I read use them so I know there spec's. Those seem like nice solid cam choices when I was looking for cam ideas for my 273 I couldn't find many solid cams other than race cams.

I have a Isky E-4 in my HP 273. Works great. Sounds pretty good It's a nice, off the shelf, solid lifter cam that will work good with stock components. tmm

I have rebuilt and upgrade my ’65 273.
The spec is as follows.
D4B Edelbrock intake, 4 bbl dual plain
Edelbrock 1406, 600 cfm carb
Comp Cam cam part # 20-246-4 Duration @ .015 270/270, duration @ .050 224/224, .313 lobe lift, valve lift .468/.468, 110 lobe separation
Electronic ignition
Domed pistons, comp. ratio of 10.5:1
Spitfire headers
Also put in front K-H disc brakes and a new three row radiator.
I am very pleased and the motor runs real good.
